The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 97
Chapter 97: Chapter 97
Beth followed Liam. She needed to hear why he thought she would be arrested. "Haven’t you been listening? I was with my uncle and his wife the day Veronica had her accident. She’s the crazy one. Why would she get on a boat when she’s afraid of open water? She ruined all our trips in the past so we had to leave her home."
Beth wanted to thank Veronica for screaming and begging her not to get on a boat after the little incident where Beth pushed her. Those days without Veronica around were the best.
"At this age, why doesn’t she know how to swim? Do you have any idea how many times I had to listen to her screaming before my uncle decided to let her stay at home? We couldn’t even take her to a pool because she would act a fool," said Beth.
Beth wondered if Liam was listening to her since he didn’t look at her. "Veronica made a bad decision to get on a boat when she didn’t know how to swim, lost her footing and fell in the water. She was lucky someone was near to help her. Why don’t you think about rewarding them and leave me alone?"
Beth continued, "The police have already written it off as an accident so you need to move on. Why are you laughing?’
"You need to pay more attention to this case. That witness you want me to reward mentioned someone leaving on another boat. Didn’t your uncle tell you or are all of you so careless to not pay attention to it? That stupid idea that she tried to kill herself is over with," Liam said, fine with sharing it since it was easy to find out.
He had said from the beginning that it wasn’t an accident and all of a sudden, the person who saved Veronica decided to bring up the fact they saw another boat leaving. Why they waited so long was something Liam needed answers to.
"What does that have to do with me? I didn’t go on a boat with Veronica so I can’t get arrested for anything. You’re coming after the wrong person. What if it is someone close to you? What if they did something to her?" Beth asked, trying to fight the wrong accusations.
She didn’t do anything wrong. Was it wrong to just see something happen?
Liam stopped walking when he reached the door. His car had to come around so he would hear what Beth had to say. "And who do you think it is?"
"Someone with a lot of money to pull it off. How do we know it was not you? Where were you around that time? Why weren’t you with your wife? Why isn’t anyone questioning you?" Beth asked, seeing Liam as the first person who should have been suspected.
What if he wanted to get rid of Veronica? Liam had the money to do it and he had the money to solve all of this so why wasn’t it solved?
"’Ha! It’s you, isn’t it? I know it is you. It makes sense," Beth muttered. She was certain it was someone from his family that was there. Why had she been feeling guilty when it wasn’t her fault? She had been worrying and putting herself in the position of the person who did try to harm Veronica.
"I could have you called in for knowing something about this case but not come forward with any information. They’ll love to know why you had Veronica’s phone. Goodbye," Liam said, heading down to his car.
Beth froze. She could not have heard him right. It couldn’t be just a guess. He had to know something.
Beth panicked. She wasn’t able to get rid of the phone yet to clear herself. She was innocent but that phone would make her look guilty and she didn’t know the names of the people she saw with Veronica to point them out.
Who would believe her when she already lied about where she was? How she had left out she was meeting with Veronica that day.
Beth wanted to follow Liam to tell him that it was all a big misunderstanding about the phone. That she had only found it on the ground. She wasn’t the first person to find a missing phone and keep it to herself. She wouldn’t be the last person to do it.
Beth started to move to follow Liam but she stopped. He wasn’t going to believe anything she said.
"I need to go home," Beth realised. She had to see that the phone was right where she left it.
Only Evelyn should be home right now. Did Evelyn go snooping in her room and find the phone? Had Evelyn stabbed her in the back by calling Liam or Veronica?
"I knew this was going to happen," Beth angrily muttered.
Evelyn had been trying to act like she wasn’t on Veronica’s side and kissing her ass to get her daughter back. Beth saw this a little after Veronica woke up and they were trying to make it sound like she was crazy.
"Uncle," Beth tugged on Henry’s shirt. "I need to go home. I feel lightheaded."
Henry wasn’t ready to leave. When would he get another chance to mix with these people? "Are you sure? You might just need something to eat or drink. Why don’t you look around for something to help? Maybe they have medicine-"
"Uncle," Beth grabbed his arm to pull him close. "We need to leave. It is important and it might affect the family. I can only tell you in the car. We need to go now."
Henry wanted to hear what was so important now. Why did Beth look so rattled? "Gentleman," he turned to the men he was speaking to. "I need to take my niece home. Women control us these days, don’t they? Our conversation isn’t done here. I will invite all of you to dinner sometime."
Henry was fuming inside that he had to leave the party early when he was just getting close to men who would make good clients. Had he brought Evelyn along with him instead of Beth, she would have mingled and gotten the wives to show interest in his dealership.
Beth just stood around while he introduced her to people who could help her career and didn’t talk much like she was already some big name. He had spoiled her too much and now it was starting to affect him.
"This better be good," Henry told Beth. If not, she was not going to hear the end of this.
With teary eyes, Beth looked at her uncle. "I have something to confess."
