Chapter 92: Chapter 92

A few days passed with no sign of attack on Vance from Benjamin but Veronica and Liam could not be concerned about it for much longer since the day had come to visit with her mother.

Veronica didn’t know how many strings Liam had pulled to make it happen but Evelyn invited her over the day Henry and Beth would be attending the party Liam got them invited to. Liam would be at the party to keep an eye on the pair and hold them back longer if needed.

Veronica had Jerome waiting in her car to be used later as a distraction when she needed her mother away to look for the phone.

"You do not need to go if you are afraid of being alone with your mother," Jerome informed Veronica since she hadn’t gotten out of the car even though they had arrived more than five minutes ago.

"I don’t want to leave. I just needed time to prepare myself to see my mother. It’s going to be a headache to smile and act like I want to start over with her. Then if Beth doesn’t have my phone, what if my mother has it? I don’t want to see my mother being more evil. I am going to get out now," Veronica said, ready to start her plan.

It was either now or never and Veronica couldn’t end the day without speaking to her mother.

"We can hear everything the two of you say. Just give me the code we talked about and I will be up. If you feel like you are in danger, do not hesitate to say something. Your safety matters more than finding your phone. I would like to make it to my wedding," Jerome joked.

Veronica laughed. She needed that laugh before she went in to see her mother. "I will make sure Liam doesn’t try to kill you. I am not going to stay if it feels like my life is in danger. Goodbye for now," she said, exiting the car.

Veronica closed the door and started to make her way into the apartment building her mother lived in. She thought her mother would have loved a house instead of an apartment even though they owned the apartment.

Just looking at the building it did not feel like home one bit.

"Oh!" Veronica gasped after a black car suddenly stopped just as she crossed the street. It sped off soon after. "Why are they driving like that?"

Veronica considered herself lucky she had crossed the street in time. She noticed Jerome get out of the car and reach for something in his jacket. "Does she carry around a gun?" She wondered but she didn’t have time to go back to ask.

Veronica shook her head, brushing off the crazy driver who sped off as soon as she reached the apartment building and entered. She sent Evelyn a message that she had arrived and was on her way up.

The nervousness was back since there wasn’t any telling how this would go. Would her mother be there alone or would there be someone else? It was only certain Beth and Henry would not be around since Liam confirmed they were at the party which was more than an hour away from where Evelyn was now.

"Sugar plum!" Evelyn greeted Veronica when the elevator doors opened. "You came. I’m so happy to see you," she entered the elevator to hug Veronica.

Veronica didn’t know what to do at first when her mother hugged her. "It is good to see you too," she replied, her hands still not going around her mother for a hug. "We should get out before the doors close."

"We should. Is this the key they gave you to get up? I had to do a lot to get them to give you a key and keep this a secret from Henry so you owe since I could get in trouble. Come with me," Evelyn said, reaching for Veronica’s hand so they could walk together.

"Your daughter isn’t welcomed here? I know you are welcome to my home but if I invited you, Liam wouldn’t be angry," said Veronica.

"We don’t have the best relationship right now and I didn’t tell Henry about this. Then there’s the building that you bought-"

"That Liam bought," Veronica corrected Evelyn. "I didn’t have anything to do with that. You should tell your husband to stop going around speaking about what he wants to invest in before he gets it. I didn’t tell Liam to buy it and I didn’t have much reason to tell him not to."

"That is true. I was telling Henry that it was only his fault for speaking about it so much. We thought Liam bought the building and gave it to you to be petty. It wouldn’t be the first time he has done something like that. You have a few buildings to your name," said Evelyn.

"You seem to be keeping up with me a lot," Veronica said, curious as to how much Evelyn knew about what she owned.

"Well, you are my daughter. Welcome home," Evelyn opened the door for Veronica. "It’s been so long since you came here. Had I known you would come back I would have kept your room the way you left it but I needed room for another closet. I hope you do not mind."

"Not at all. I would have been surprised if you kept a for me. It looks good," Veronica commented on the decor.

"Just like you remember?" Evelyn asked, purposely to test Veronica.

"No. A lot has changed over the years. You wouldn’t keep old styles in here," Veronica said, hoping her answer would pass.

"Of course not. You know me so well. I like to decorate so every other day I am always changing something. Would you like something to drink?"

"No, but thank you. Should we start with a tour?" Veronica suggested.

"A tour would be boring. Your old room is over there, Henry’s study is that way along with our room, the library he never uses, Beth’s room is there," Evelyn said, pointing in the direction of where she spoke about. "And other rooms I cannot be bothered with. We should sit and get started on why you are here."

Evelyn went to the living room to take a seat first. She wanted to get to the bottom of what brought Veronica here. While Veronica still had that attitude Evelyn hated something else was missing. She was certain Veronica still did not have her memories.

Veronica sat down opposite her mother. "Now that the greetings are out of the way, what can you tell me about my father?"
