Chapter 89: Chapter 89

Liam walked outside to his gates where a black car was parked and Benjamin was sitting on the car’s hood with a bottle in his hands. Why was it that when he got one relative out of his hair another came to bother him?

"Nephew!" Benjamin called Liam. "That man was wanted by all. You are loved by all even though you do nothing for the family. You’ve got a nice big place," he said, looking around the home. "Isn’t it too big for just you and Veronica or does she like big things?"

"Watch it. You might go back home with a black eye if you’re not careful," said Liam.

"Always overprotective. Where is your wife? I wanted to speak to the two of you together. I am not going to do anything to her so bring her out. You’re going to like what I have to say," Benjamin said, taking a long sip from his wine bottle.

Liam looked at the bottle. "Have something to celebrate? What else did you have to drink besides wine?"

"Anything that makes me feel good. We should go for something to drink. Just you and me. I can tell you need a drink by how much you have to put up with when it comes to your mother. Where is your mother, Liam? I know she’s not home and you must know where she ran off to," said Benjamin.

"I don’t keep track of my mother. You should have her phone to call or message her. You are not so drunk out of your mind that you don’t know phones exist, right? I want to know why out of everywhere you could have gone you came here to cause trouble in front of my home. This neighbourhood isn’t for people like you," Liam said, looking around to see if anyone was out.

Liam picked this neighbourhood since the people around him where quiet.

Benjamin laughed at Liam. "I am welcome anywhere. I can make the value of this neighbourhood go up if I were to live here. You should thank me since I just might do it. Don’t frown, Liam. You should be happy to have your favourite uncle around."

"You’re my only uncle and I don’t like you. Say what you came to say and leave. Or did you just come here to find my mother? How disappointing for you that you came here for nothing," Liam said, turning around to go back inside.

"Help me," Benjamin pleaded. "I know you don’t want to get caught up in our family affairs so help me and I will make sure no one bothers you going forward. Your grandfather is hellbent on getting you to join us since you have a good reputation."

Benjamin walked toward the gates almost tripping to get there. "I am supposed to be convincing you to go to him but I know you don’t want it. Help me win without him and I will make sure the Smiths don’t bother you or your wife. What happened to her wasn’t an accident. Think about who likes to get rid of flaws in the family."

"All of you like to get rid of flaws. My mother does it, grandfather, and you would too if you were ordered to do it. Did grandfather have something to do with what happened to Veronica?" Liam asked.

Benjamin shrugged his shoulders. "How should I know? He doesn’t tell me anything. Your mother might know. She didn’t like your wife so she would have put out the hit for her. Why would you marry a nobody? I am not trying to fight," he put up his hands. "I’m just asking since I never knew. You could have married anyone yet you picked her."

"Coming from a man who married his wife because his father thought she would look good beside you, I don’t think I need to explain why I married Veronica. You’re screwed up because you’re doing what everyone wants you to. An idiot who is drinking and driving," Liam concluded after not seeing a driver.

Benjamin smiled. "I’ve never killed anyone."

"Yet. You haven’t killed anyone yet. You’re not going to be lucky each time and if you leave here drunk as you are now, I am going to call the police-"

"He’s not going to like it if you get the police involved. It’s always a hassle to make the calls to get me out and your mother isn’t here to do it. You need to call her back to come help me and then I will help you to be free. No one will come to bother you and your lovely wife. I’ve always liked Veronica, you know," Benjamin lied.

Liam stopped to entertain Benjamin a little longer. "I don’t have to look at you to know you’re lying. Why would I help you run anything in this city when you can’t last a few hours without my mother? I like this city and I don’t want to see it go shit with you in charge of anything. I wouldn’t put you in charge of planning a birthday party."

Benjamin was reminded of why he didn’t like Liam. Not only had it been the jealousy over Vance liking Liam more but Liam was just like his mother with the insults. The only difference between Liam and Adeline was how Liam seemed so empty. He could read Adeline’s emotions sometimes but not Liam.

Benjamin just laughed it off since he needed Liam’s help. "Listen, if you help me then I can dig around to see if Vance had anything to do with what happened to Veronica. I’m telling you now that it wasn’t me. I promise. I’m always near his office so I can get in to search for any records. All you need to do is help me since your mother is hiding."

"Tell you what. I’ll tell you something he has done. He’s been looking into everything you do and her family. He was annoyed with you for hiding Veronica’s family. Not an uncle, aunt, or grandmother can be found from her parents. Not even from her mother. You’re good," Benjamin complimented Liam.

This was why he needed Liam on his side.

Liam couldn’t take the credit for it since he didn’t do it. He hadn’t heard any word about Veronica’s father yet and it was also hard for his grandfather to find something. That should be impossible since his grandfather was in the right place in politics to find out anything about anyone.

"There’s something on your mind," Benjamin noticed. ’Tell me. We can help each other out. I can prove to you that I can be better than how I was before. I won’t be my father’s puppet. Trust me."

Benjamin tossed the wine bottle when Liam looked at it again.

"Pick it up," said Liam. Why did Benjamin think he wanted any litter around his home? "Helping you wouldn’t be any different from me making a fool of myself. Haven’t you been paying attention over the years to know how to help yourself or did you think that my mother was always going to be around?"

"We’re all given our role to play in all of this. I just had to show up and say what was already prepared for me and your mother had to make sure I kept a good appearance. You wouldn’t understand it since you don’t come around a lot. I’ve always disliked being his puppet," Benjamin revealed.

Vance treated him like a fool and over the years, Benjamin grew a hatred for his father. He was still afraid of Vance but he looked for any opportunity to get rid of his father so he could be free and take over his father’s spot.

"He doesn’t think I am smart. At least not smart like your mother. You don’t have any idea how lucky you were not to be raised by him. Your mother is heartless, I won’t disagree with you there but our father was cruel. Beating us into obedience. At least he wouldn’t touch the face," Benjamin laughed, happy his good looks were still intact.

Liam wasn’t as amused as Benjamin was.

Benjamin’s laughter died down. "I have good reasons to drink. Instead of going after your mother, he always punishes me. Wouldn’t you drink too? I would like to tell you that I don’t want to be involved in anything he’s doing but it’s what I was raised all my life to do so I don’t have other dreams. So, just help me with this and I will help you."

"You want me to believe that after years of staying silent, you are finally going to get rid of your father? I don’t know if I believe you. You want me to do all the work, don’t you? Why don’t you prove that you’re tired of being his puppet and show me something first?" Liam suggested.

Benjamin frowned. "You want me to put out an attack that can ruin him by myself? If I could do that alone then I wouldn’t have come to you. How about I give you something to use and you try to bring him down? Doesn’t that sound better?"

"You’re not going to have me replace my mother by doing everything for you. Find someone else to help you," Liam replied.
