The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 86
Chapter 86: Chapter 86
Evelyn couldn’t hide her excitement for the prospect of meeting with Veronica. It was long overdue that her daughter came to her senses and met with her mother for a civil conversation without Liam or any of his employees around.
There was just one problem.
"How do I get those two to be away?" Evelyn wondered.
Beth was too unstable for Evelyn to trust that she wouldn’t ruin the visit and Henry would go on about the building Liam had bought. Neither one would make this go well and Evelyn didn’t know when she would get another chance like this.
"What day do they both have to be out?" Evelyn asked herself, trying to think of their schedule.
She could get Henry out of their home but Beth was a little harder to control these days. Beth might suddenly show up during Veronica’s visit and then they would have to hear about her leaving again.
This was why the talk shouldn’t be here but Veronica was adamant about it like she desperately needed to be here.
Evelyn was tempted to arrange for them to meet elsewhere but was curious. She wanted to see what Veronica or maybe Liam wanted that she would come here of all places. This is the chance that she was looking for.
Being Evelyn Harper was starting to become a bit boring since there wasn’t much excitement in her life anymore with how tight Henry held onto his money. He was not doing his part as the provider of the family.
At least not for Evelyn. Beth was spoiled beyond imagination for doing nothing.
The sound of the door opening made Evelyn panic since it could only be Henry returning home. She smiled to hide that she was up to something and hurried to see him.
"Welcome home!" Evelyn greeted Henry with the sweetest voice she could force.
Henry suspected she was coming to him for something. He was used to that voice and what it meant by now. "No," he replied.
Evelyn frowned. "No, what? I don’t want money from you. When was the last time I asked you for money?"
"Yesterday," Henry answered. "Don’t act like there isn’t something you want from me."
"I don’t. Yesterday and today are two different days. I am just happy to see you home. Did you have a hard day? Relax Henry," Evelyn rubbed his shoulders. "I don’t want money from you but if I did, I am your wife."
"A very expensive one. I see why other men choose to rent a car and change it every once in a while instead of buying," Henry muttered.
"I told you not to talk about me being a car. Leave that car talk for at work," said Evelyn.
’Where you are not selling any cars,’ she added in her head.
"I don’t want money from you. I would have just taken the card and ordered something if I wanted. I have the numbers written down. I am just happy to see you home. When was the last time we enjoyed an evening together? You’ve been working too hard," Evelyn said, taking off his jacket as she talked.
Henry was still suspicious of Evelyn. She was only this nice when she wanted something from him but he would still enjoy it. He had been working hard and it was nice to come home to a woman taking care of him.
As expensive as it was to have Evelyn in his life, Henry liked that she played her role well to take care of him. He could not speak poorly of how she was as a wife. She only complained when she didn’t feel taken care of and as of late with his income changing, she had a right to complain.
Evelyn was surprised by Henry hugging her. He wasn’t like this very often which meant he had a bad day. "Tell me what happened. I will just stand here and listen to you."
"Our cars are not selling fast like they used to. I’ve got all these other businesses popping up to steal our clients. I needed that damn building. That was going to be the investment to get us right back to where we were in a few years. If not for that damn Sterling boy," Henry muttered, angry just thinking about it again.
"How about a drink? That should help you-"
"This is partly your fault, you know. If not for that daughter, he wouldn’t have gone to the building. I told you to make her behave properly. That wasn’t too much to ask for after years of taking care of her. You couldn’t do that for me," Henry cast blame on Evelyn.
Evelyn stopped trying to comfort Henry. For a moment she thought he was going to let his guard down for once and tell her about the pressure he was feeling but no, he chose to blame her for his failures.
"Henry, I already told you that you were the one who messed up. You were dangling that building in front of everyone you spoke to without having the money to buy it. If not Liam, someone else was going to take-"
"And now you’re on their side. You do this and then wonder why I am annoyed by you. Why Beth hasn’t been feeling so close to you. Maybe she’s right that you want to leave her. Beth comes to me to talk all the time," Henry said since Evelyn looked confused. "She brought up the idea of looking for that ex-husband since it bothers you so much when Veronica brings him up.
"Were you planning to go back to him?"
Evelyn bit her tongue. These two were going to drive her mad. She was giving them all her attention yet they were stuck thinking that she was going to up and leave. "You must have drunk something strong before you came home. I’ll take that as why you’re talking a whole lot of rubbish. Why would I go back to that man?"
"Right? It wouldn’t make any sense. He could hardly take care of his daughter with what little money he sent and he couldn’t be any good since you left him but sometimes people make stupid decisions and go back to what isn’t good," Henry said, stepping away from Evelyn since she annoyed him. "It would be over for you if you did that."
Henry couldn’t understand one thing about Evelyn for all the years he was married to her. "You’re a woman who knows what she wants. How did you reach the point of marriage with a man who couldn’t take care of you? Then had a child with him. That was stupid."
"Who said he couldn’t take care of me?" Evelyn asked, not thinking about what she was revealing.
Henry stopped to look back at Evelyn. "What did you just say? You want me to believe a man who hardly sent money for his daughter was someone who could take care of you? Does he have money but just doesn’t love his daughter? That would upset me even more to know I took care of her when her father didn’t want her."
Evelyn regretted questioning him. Why would Henry be so stupid to think she would show him all the money sent for Veronica? Just for him to take it and use it for his failing ideas?
"You said he was a leech who would come begging for money if he could get to you," Henry repeated what she told him.
Years had gone by and he never once saw a picture of her ex-husband. He was starting to think the man was long dead.
"He is a leech," Evelyn agreed with Henry. That was the best way she could describe Veronica’s father was to call him a leech but it wasn’t money he was going to take from her. "I don’t want to talk about this. We were in a good mood until that building came up. There’s nothing we can do about it now so stop bringing it up."
"Seeing the way you acted just now made a decision easy for me. I was invited to an important event. It’s a good place to mingle and do business. I can only bring one guest with me and seeing that Beth is trying to enter the modelling world, I am going to take her with me. She needs to show herself around to people who can get her good jobs," said Henry.
Evelyn didn’t like that Henry was going to have her stay at home when she was always by his side but then she thought about something else. This was all too coincidental. She needed Beth and Henry out of their home and now they would be gone for Veronica to come.
’Is this her doing?’ Evelyn wondered.
It would be too perfect for Veronica to have planned this but it didn’t feel like a coincidence. Henry didn’t know to suspect something was wrong since he didn’t know about Veronica wanting to come here.
Something was at play here and Evelyn was going to get to the bottom of it.
"Well, Beth has been feeling a little down lately so this should cheer her up. Have fun," Evelyn said, surprising Henry since he expected her to put up a fight to go.
