The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 83
Chapter 83: Chapter 83
Nathan was hurt by Liam seeing him as a bad father. It was easy for Liam to say that when he wasn’t around so often to see the things Nathan did to protect him.
Nathan chose not to fight Liam on how he was as a father. Someday when Liam had children then he would understand.
"When am I getting grandchildren? It’s been a long enough time. Why don’t you bring us some good news?" Nathan asked, ready for someone to call him grandpa.
"You want me to think about getting a baby now after my wife was in a big accident? How are you still married? Why am I asking that? You and mother are similar. Don’t ask me about children. If you want someone to play with, get a pet," Liam suggested.
"One of these days I am going to hit you hard enough to make up for all the times I didn’t hit you-"
"You will do no such thing," Adeline cut off Nathan. "We’ve never laid a hand on him even when we should’ve and it won’t start now. He’s too grown for it anyway. You didn’t answer my calls or messages so I didn’t think I would see you today. Do you want something from us?"
"When have I ever wanted something from you two and come here to get it? I know you’re afraid right now but let’s not lose our common sense. What did you want to tell me?" Liam asked, curious about what made his mother call it quits.
"You need to speak better to your parents. Everyone fights with their parents once in a while but they still know how to be respectful so I expect the same from you. I’m sure your father has already told you that I will be leaving town for a while. Just to clear my head and then I will be back," said Adeline.
Liam laughed at his mother’s way of saying she was going into hiding. "That’s a new way of saying you’re scared. I might use it in the future. I already know that you’re afraid of your father. Why try to hide it now?"
"I am not trying to hide it now. We all have good reason to be afraid of him. He either gets what he wants or he takes down everyone around him. I need some time to think about what I will do going forward and I can’t think in peace with your uncle trying to convince me to come back. He’s an idiot," Adeline said, most annoyed by Benjamin.
It wasn’t that long ago and Benjamin who talked like he could do everything by himself was already sending her too many messages. It started off as insults for turning on the family but then it became about paying her more to do her job.
Adeline picked up the glass Nathan had set aside. "I’ve given all my life to that family and after asking for one simple thing, they couldn’t give it to me. I’m afraid of my father but I hate being like a servant to my brother even more. I had to leave and unless your grandfather decides to push me instead of Benjamin then I won’t be going back."
"Sounds like you two have different plans. He thinks you’re done for good and he’s going to protect you," Liam pointed to his father. "While you are giving your father time to think about dropping Benjamin and investing in you. You’re far from done with the Smiths."
Nathan looked to Adeline for her to deny it. She was meant to be done with the Smiths from now on since they weren’t appreciative of her. Why would she want to go back if Vance decided to put all his eggs in her basket? Her father was just going to try to control her.
"Tell him that you’re done for good, Adeline. You would have to be stupid to go back to your father after he couldn’t do one thing for you. Tell him!" Nathan raised his voice.
Adeline didn’t see the need to make that kind of promise. If she could climb a little higher using her father’s help, she would take it. "I’m done for now. That is what is important now. I’m angry with my father but I am still a Smith. I can’t let the family crumble if there is something I can do. I just need to get rid of Benjamin."
"If you become his next puppet then you are going to have to use us in the future. And here I was thinking that you’re finally doing something I can be proud of but there was a catch. You’ll always be disappointing to me. I don’t know why I get my hopes up with you," Liam said, blaming himself for almost being fooled.
"I won’t call for you if my father pushes me forward. I’ve had enough of getting embarrassed by you and not showing up when I need you. Your grandfather was always the one who wanted you to come with me. Now he’s tasked your uncle to bring you so expect to see him soon," Adeline warned Liam.
Adeline had to completely give up on Liam. She was never going to get him to do what she wanted and continuing to ask him was a waste of her time. She had too much to worry about these days to be chasing Liam.
Adeline handed Nathan his glass for him to pour her a drink. "You’ll be happy to know that I won’t get involved in your marriage anymore. You picked her so you’ll have to deal with what I know will happen. I can’t keep trying to put all of you in the right direction."
"I see it more of you trying to control my life to fit your father’s plans. You’re a mini grandfather which makes it surprising that he’s letting you have a little freedom to be able to go on vacation. If you were smart, you would cut ties with them now because they will go down. Whether it be from karma catching up or your brother screwing up," said Liam.
It was obvious the Smiths weren’t what they used to be and if his mother was out of the way then they would be even easier to take down since she had her hands in everything.
"Well, thank you for no longer being interested in my marriage. I hope you don’t take it back. Next time, just put all of this in a message instead of saying we have to talk. Have fun hiding," Liam said, heading toward the front door since there was nothing more to talk about.
On another day Nathan would try to make Liam stay a little longer but he had something more important to do. "We need to talk," he told Adeline.
