The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 72
Chapter 72: Chapter 72
Veronica tried to force herself to sleep but she couldn’t. She wasn’t ready to go to bed just because Liam was in the room with her. Instead of going to sleep, she stared at the television, trying to make sense of the show that came on every night. She was yet to know the names of any of the characters since she got lost in her thoughts during the episodes.
"I know for certain you are not enjoying this show. I can put on something better for you. I didn’t think about you not knowing what you want to watch," Liam confessed.
Veronica turned so she could see Liam. She thought he was sleeping by now since he was so still. "You’re awake. I don’t care about finding something I like. I just like the tv for the noise or I don’t fall asleep."
"Well, it’s not working anymore since you are still awake after eleven. I thought you were planning to go back to the art gallery tomorrow. If you’re fighting sleep so you get to stay home tomorrow, should I join you?" Liam asked, ready to cancel his plans for tomorrow.
Veronica laughed. "This isn’t the first time I went to sleep so late. You should get some rest. You probably have a lot of work to do or a lot of people to avoid. I might not go to the gallery tomorrow. I was thinking of going to the beach and trying to face my fear."
"Isn’t it a little too soon? We should speak with your doctor first-"
"I am not going to jump right in the water. I’m not crazy," Veronica said, pinching Liam when she heard him make a noise that disagreed with her. "Going there would be a nice start. It’s not the same with the pool here. I want to go near where I almost, you know."
Liam wanted her to recall something but he didn’t need it so bad for Veronica to be going anywhere near the open water again. "You don’t need to push yourself so soon."
"I fear waiting too late and if there was ever the tiniest chance of my memories coming back then I missed it. The reality is that I am not the Veronica you are used to and the more people I meet, the more I want to remember to protect myself. I am willing to just go to a beach and sit for now. I would love it if you could just support me," said Veronica.
The dreams of being surrounded by water and being pulled down by something were too much for her to bear so there was no way she would be so crazy to run and jump into the sea but she wanted to make some small steps.
Liam sighed. He had a bad feeling about this but as long as he was near then he could help if she felt uncomfortable. "Okay. We could try small steps until you get in the water. It’s about time you learn how to swim."
"Hey! It’s fine for an adult to not know how to swim. I’m sure I had some reasonable explanation for why I didn’t learn to swim. I was afraid of open water so I stayed away from it. Well, until now. At least I am willing to learn now," said Veronica.
"Yes, yes," Liam replied, trying to be supportive. "You can still go to the gallery and I will pick you up by noon to take you to the beach for lunch. I can get a picnic packed up for us."
Veronica rolled onto her side. "Do you have somewhere to go tomorrow? I thought you would be working from home. Did something come up?"
"There’s always work to pick up from the office and I have Jerome busy with other things. It’s something I don’t trust another employee to go into my office to get. I won’t be there long so I can get to the gallery before noon to stay there with you," Liam suggested.
Veronica liked the sound of it but then she felt like she was pulling him away from his work. A man like Liam had to be busy with work. "Are you sure you’re free? I don’t mind if you have to be working. You don’t need to spend every hour with me or agree to every request to go somewhere with me. I’m fine with you telling me no once in a while."
"Once in a while?"
"Yes. If you tell me no each time I want to go somewhere with you then our marriage is in trouble. You should be glad that I have some interest in you now because I didn’t before. I don’t want you to be behind on work because of me. I’m already blamed for everything else," Veronica joked.
"I’m never going to hear the end of that, am I?" Liam asked, feeling like he carried some of the blame for it.
Liam moved his hand so Veronica could get closer to him. He wondered if she was drowsy now because of how comfortable she was making herself. Not that he minded it. Veronica was coming out of her comfort space and being more touchy with him.
It was hard to just lay still with her and let her take the lead in deciding how she wanted to sleep. His body was nothing more than a giant pillow for Veronica to use with her eventually placing her leg over his lower body.
Liam closed his eyes, trying to think of something innocent that would help against exposing him and have Veronica slide over to the other side of the bed.
Luckily, morning came without any incidents and Liam headed to work fast to get what he needed then he would go back to Veronica.
Liam stood in an elevator with Jerome who seemed to be in a good mood. A little too much of a good mood.
"I’ve had enough of you smiling in the corner like an idiot. What is it? Picked a good spot for a honeymoon? I’m almost tempted to make you have to work after your wedding," Liam said but he didn’t mean it.
Jerome was deserving of a break.
Jerome cleared his throat. "My future wife might try to kill you if you ruin our honeymoon plans. I’d hate for you two to be fighting over it but luckily, all I would need to do is go to Veronica."
"What is this? Are you a child?" Liam asked, turning to face Jerome. "Who runs to someone’s wife?"
"Mrs. Sterling has always said that I can go to her if you put too much work on me. I was smiling because of how many breaks you are suddenly taking," Jerome revealed. "It’s not like you. It’s about time. Should I schedule a small trip out of the city for you? You would just need to be back in time for your Clark’s party."
"I am not going on any vacation yet and I forgot about that party," Liam said, annoyed since he wasn’t ready for another event.
"He’s been your friend since high school and you’ve never missed a party. He’s been reaching out to see you for a drink. I also have something important to bring to your attention," Jerome said, searching a folder in his hands. "I checked the photos you received. This one is important."
Liam took the photo to look at it and to his surprise two people he would never place have anything in common were sitting together. "She met with Beth. That’s a surprise. Nora has been a little busy."
"I had quite the interaction with her recently after overhearing her speaking about your wife. Seeing the photo is another reason to keep an eye on her, especially with Beth going on with this rumour about you having an affair," said Jerome.
"A handful of women in the office don’t hide their admiration for you but it’s never been nothing more than that for most. I’ve sent out warnings to anyone who acted out of line but with Nora, it might come to getting her out of your office," Jerome suggested since anyone meeting with that family wasn’t up to any good.
Liam stared at the photo. "Nora was one of the employees selected to attend the charity event, right? Beth was there. This is the big affair plan she’s coming up with? I’m more curious what gave Nora the idea there was something between us."
"Only the delusional person sees something. She’s always been quick to run to your side to tell you the smallest details about her cases. I thought it was a kiss-ass trying to take all the credit for the work the entire legal team does but it is obvious she likes you. You just never paid attention to it. You’re strangely clueless with some women," Jerome said, trying to understand how Liam missed it.
"She’s an employee. I just pay attention to her work," Liam replied.
"There’s one more thing. She brought up something about there being a rumour I had feelings for Veronica. I want to remind you that I have always been happy in my relationship. No need to worry," Jerome assured Liam.
"Worry? Are none of you paying attention to the kind of man Veronica likes?" Liam asked, folding the photo as he spoke.
The elevator door opened right after.
"Find Nora for me."
