Chapter 71: Chapter 71

"I am not shy, you are. With your chest exposed and all," Veronica muttered. "I should have just gone to sleep before you came."

"You should have," Liam agreed with Veronica. "Because now I get to be entertained before I go to bed. What are you wearing that has you wrapped up so much? It is not cold here."

"The nighties are just too short," Veronica decided to be honest. "I saw some of your clothes already moved back to the closet so if you were looking for a shirt to wear to bed, you can get one now. Or not," she added after Liam laid down on the bed.

"Stop overthinking it and go to sleep," Liam said, knowing she had to be in her head about this. "This is very different from the first time we slept together and I mean just sleeping. I think I was the nervous one while you were teasing me."

"I did?" Veronica asked, surprised to hear this. "That’s surprising. I would have bet you to be the one enjoying it the most. What were you nervous about?"

Veronica turned on her side to look at Liam.

"With all the jokes that you made, how could I not be nervous? You have no idea the kind of woman you were. I thought you were shy because I started to notice you were quiet and tried not to interact with anyone but once you got comfortable, you were a different person," said Liam.

"Isn’t everyone like that? I’m sure once you saw that I wasn’t interested in our family you started to show the real you. I wonder what was going through my head when I started to become friends with you. I had to know that if my mother found out or Beth, they would have not liked it. How did we manage to hide our relationship until the engagement?" Veronica asked, puzzled by it.

With how many were following them, taking pictures to write up articles, how didn’t anyone know they were together?

"Who told you about that? Edna? We were a private couple and I knew how to dodge anyone trailing me when I was younger. Now that I’ve replaced my father there are more on me. It was quite a shock to both families but we had only gone to my parents," Liam recounted. "That was a mistake on my part."

"That means my mother found out with the rest of the city. I imagine she was fuming. I would pay to see you and Beth go on a date. I wouldn’t be angry if you go on one now just so I can be somewhere watching. Oh!" Veronica moved a pillow from her face. "It’s not polite to throw a pillow at your wife. I might retaliate."

Veronica placed Liam’s weapon behind her so she couldn’t be hit again. "I know you don’t want to talk about your family so let’s talk about the Harpers. They don’t seem to be this wealthy family and they were wasting money on that building. Which reminds me, did you go through with buying the building or were you just trying to get under his skin?"

"I bought it. It was too good to pass up and I got to piss him off. Henry should have kept his mouth shut if he didn’t want anyone with all the money ready to buy it finding out. Do you want it?" Liam offered.

Veronica shook her head. "I don’t want anyone to think I was scheming to get that building away from them. They are already bothering us about the money they think they are owed. I’m sure once it gets to him that you bought the building I will somehow be blamed."

She continued, "Liam can do no wrong. It’s Veronica who is behind everything. I’ve caught on to it being this way."

Liam could tell anyone it was what he wanted to do or didn’t want to do yet the blame was passed to her.

"I’m sorry," Liam apologised.

"What are you apologising for? It can’t be helped that’s how everyone thinks. I’m used to it so don’t worry about it. It would be quite interesting if the roles were reversed with me being the wealthy one and you being the outsider. I want to see if the treatment would be the same," said Veronica.

"It’s the same," Liam replied, having seen it himself many times. "The men are treated like errand boys and try to do everything their in-laws ask them to do. It’s to make up for the money they didn’t bring to the family. I know of one couple who got divorced because the husband couldn’t take much more of it. Money matters."

"I’m not as satisfied as I thought I would be but good to know there’s a group of outsiders like me. Did I ever meet with any of them?" Veronica asked, curious. Where were her friends? Why hadn’t anyone other than Julia come to see her?

"Some of them are judgy even though they are being judged. I don’t want to talk about them. I want to sleep," Liam said, grabbing Veronica’s hand to slide her over to him. He had enough of her trying to hide.

Veronica froze as she was pressed against Liam’s bare chest. Her dress had definitely ridden up and now she was super aware of their position. Her voice was lost.

Liam turned his head away from Veronica to hide his smile from her. She was too easy to tease when she was like this. He missed the old Veronica but this one he could love with her personality change.

"I can’t breathe like this!" Veronica exclaimed, pushing Liam away from her so she could relax.

He was lucky that the bed was large enough that he didn’t fall when Veronica pushed him.

Liam kept holding her hand. "Don’t run from your feelings."

"I am not, I just," Veronica paused, trying to think of the best way to explain it. "I do like you. It hasn’t been long since I woke up but the more we talk and we’re alone together, I start to have these tiny feelings adding onto each other so when you do things like this, it’s hard to not freak out. I don’t think my love for you went anywhere and it’s driving me crazy."

"Well, if there’s anything I can do to help you, let me know. I’ve always said that my body-"

Veronica smacked her hand over Liam’s mouth to stop him from talking. "Do not make that kind of offer. That isn’t what I meant."

Veronica moved her hand when she felt his tongue. "You’re a very playful man. I bet no one would believe me if I told them."

"Who else would I be playful with but you? I thought you loved this side of me. Come back here," Liam said, pulling Veronica back to lay on his chest. "I am cold."

"Then you can get up and make the room hot," Veronica suggested.

This time she didn’t move since she was comfortable. She smelt the faint scent of the soap he used. Veronica closed her eyes as she felt like she was turning into a creep.

Liam kept his hold on Veronica. "I’m warm enough just like this. Just stay still."

Veronica reluctantly placed her hand on his chest. "You should be careful when doing this. You have no idea what thoughts are going on in my head now. I’m sure it is the same for you but my thoughts might beat your own."

Liam laughed. He shifted, trying to get a good look at Veronica’s face. "It’s not the first time I have been warned about your thoughts. I’ve always enjoyed it when you acted upon your thoughts so please, indulge yourself.

"You will need to go back to the guest room if you will be like this. Just go to sleep," Veronica said, leading by example by closing her eyes.

Liam was dangling something sweet in front of her and she just might take it. The attraction was there to convince her to do it.

Veronica needed to go to sleep before she might do something she wouldn’t regret. At dinner when watching the other couples she had the thought of kissing Liam even if it would just be on his cheek. They were holding hands but she wanted something more and the issue was that Liam was willing to give when she was fighting the urge to give in.

"Let’s see how long you last," Liam said, enjoying every bit of her struggle. All she had to do was ask and he would gladly help her with what was bothering her.

"Go to sleep," Veronica muttered, refusing to let him see her fold on the very first night. She could hold out a little bit longer. "I told you to cover your face."

"I don’t think it’s only my face you’re thinking about."

"Liam!" Veronica opened her eyes. Did she really have to live with this man and his mouth?
