Chapter 61: Chapter 61

Evelyn found the pills Beth was meant to take to help her with sleeping and pounded one with the bottom of a cup. Beth had to return to how Evelyn liked her as the sweet young woman who made her feel like a good mother and kept Henry’s anger off her.

Beth was doing too much talking right now and trying to be controlling.

Evelyn slid the powder into her hands and poured it into a clean cup then added water. She hated that it had to come to this but Beth needed some rest.

Evelyn waited for the water to settle and appear like nothing was added to it to then seek out the maid who would have to go to put away Beth’s bags.

"Give this to Beth. She’s tired so make sure you clean the room quietly," Evelyn said as she handed the cup to the maid.

Evelyn stood by, watching as the woman took the water toward Beth’s room. With the way Beth acted now, Evelyn was all for Beth finding a place to stay by herself. If she wanted to throw her first big pay into finding an apartment, Evelyn would not advise her against it anymore.

It was about time Evelyn got this home to herself and Henry. If Beth stayed any longer then Henry might go back to thinking about putting it in Beth’s name in the future.

"What did he do at her parents’ home?" Evelyn wondered since that would solve their problem. "Did he sell it? Of course, he would keep the money to himself. Should’ve sold it and given the money to Beth."

Despite Beth acting odd, Evelyn still cared for her. She hadn’t forgotten that for all these years Beth was the one by her side when she needed someone. Beth was always going to come first but other than helping her when Henry was angry, Beth was useless at the moment.

"How did she miss her chance with Liam?"

Evelyn hated how her life was right on track to snagging a rich son-in-law but then it was taken away from her fast and now Adeline was looking down on Beth.

Evelyn walked back and forth, trying to think of where to go from here. There wasn’t a chance of Beth being with Liam now but luckily for Beth, Liam wasn’t the only rich guy in the city.

Depending on how desperate Beth was to want someone to take care of her, Evelyn could find a rich man for her. All those men needed was to set their eyes on a pretty little thing like Beth and they would be chasing after her.

"Has she ever dated?" Evelyn asked herself, not having a single memory of Beth with a man. "She says all the time someone asked her out but she never brought them home. Hmm."

Evelyn started to question if she could depend on Beth to bring home someone who could take care of the entire family. As hard as she was on Veronica, she at least managed to find someone who would take care of her.

"I need wine," Evelyn said as Beth and Veronica were giving her a hard time.

First, she had to clean up the evidence of the pills she smashed.

Later in the evening, Evelyn woke to the sound of Henry’s voice. She had fallen asleep after having her wine and failed to check if Beth was still asleep.

"Uncle, can we talk in private? It won’t be long," Evelyn heard Beth’s voice.

’No!’ Evelyn panicked.

Either Beth hadn’t drank the water or enough time had passed for her to not feel drowsy.

"Henry!" Evelyn jumped up from where she laid in the living room. "How was your day? Did you invest in what you told me about?"

"I will tell you later. Come, Beth," Henry said, holding open the door to his office for her.

"Just Beth?" Evelyn asked only to have the office door shut on her. If she stormed in to hear what they wanted to speak about then she knew she would look suspicious.

Evelyn sat back down and bit her nails as she awaited what Henry would say when he came out of the office.

Inside the office, Beth helped Henry out of his jacket.

"What do you want from me? Only when you’re this nice when you want money from me. Or does Evelyn want money and send you to get it?" Henry asked, knowing their game by now. "You need to tell me how your first appointment went. Do I have a big supermodel on my hands?"

"It went well but I need to see if there are any jobs for me to start taking. He only took my photos today to pass around. That’s not what I called you here for. We saw Veronica today and as you already know, it didn’t go well. I’m worried for Evelyn," said Beth.

"Why?" Henry asked, curious as to what trouble Veronica started now. "What happened?"

"She always ends up getting hurt by Veronica. It’s not fair since you and Evelyn gave your all to give Veronica a good life. She has the same good life I was given but she’s not grateful. She brought up her father and wanted to bring him here even though Evelyn told her not to. Do you know Veronica’s father?" Beth asked, hoping he did.

"I haven’t heard about him since she became of age to take care of herself. He hardly sent her any money that could cover her expenses so why is she looking to bring him here? She’s looking to thank the wrong person for raising her. That brat," Henry muttered, annoyed.

"Evelyn said Veronica would regret it if she brought her father here. You could protect Evelyn from him. I’m curious if he would try to get a lot of money from Veronica and then she would need to run to Evelyn to send him away. Evelyn should put a-"

"That doesn’t sound smart. We’ll be caught up in it since it’s Evelyn’s ex-husband and I don’t need that kind of drama right now. I know you’re trying to help Evelyn and me but stop thinking about Veronica and focus on your career. I’m done with Veronica," Henry said as going to her led to conflict with Liam.

"But," Beth frowned, upset that her plan was shot down.

"Go work on your career and try to make a lot of money. The more I hear about Veronica from your mouth all I can think about is how you lost Liam to her. Leave me and send your aunt in. Had I known you wanted to tell me about this I would have stopped you."

Beth tried to mask her anger to not make her uncle angry. Now wouldn’t be a good time to ask for his help with the phone.
