Chapter 60: Chapter 60

"Beth, you should be careful about what you say. I am not taking any money from your uncle. If you are talking about the money I set aside if we don’t use it when we shop then you’re mistaking that money. I use it for something else but if I did pocket it, I can," said Evelyn.

"I don’t see why you’re getting so defensive. You’re free to pocket little money you don’t spend but a woman like you who doesn’t want to go back to working won’t be keeping little money. Then again, that little money adds up over the years,’ Beth concluded.

Given how many years Evelyn was married to her uncle, saving a few thousand a week would mean good savings right now.

Beth turned around to face the mirror. "As long as you didn’t have the money he needed to secure the building but kept it from him, I think you’ll be fine. Not like I would tell him since we need to keep each other’s secrets. Remember that."

Evelyn didn’t like the vibe in Beth’s room. Beth always appeared sweet and innocent but then she had moments of acting like this. Evelyn wondered if there was something Beth was hiding to make her act this way.

"Beth, I don’t know what you take me for but I would never do that to your uncle. I trust that he’ll take care of me well to never steal money from right under him. I know how it looks like for nobody to marry your uncle but I assure you, I’m in this for love," said Evelyn.

"I know that and I wasn’t judging you. You spend a lot of money on me and convince my uncle to do the same. I admire how you go out of your way to take care of me. That’s why I see you as my second mother. If you weren’t saving money for yourself then I would have been disappointed with you," Beth said, proud of Evelyn more than judging her.

What Beth said was all nice but Evelyn couldn’t have her speaking about this for Henry to hear about it. He would go into a deep dive to pull out any money she had hidden for herself. That was her protection if Henry failed to provide for her. There was nothing to fall back on if Henry got his hands on it.

"I’m glad you think highly of me but I am not-"

"Why can’t you trust that I won’t tell my uncle about it? What do you think of me? Do you not trust me?" Beth questioned, annoyed that Evelyn was trying to trick her.

Beth knew what Evelyn was doing and because she liked her, Beth didn’t tell her uncle about it.

"You’re going back to Veronica, aren’t you?" Beth asked, knowing it was coming. "After how much I defended you and stuck by your side, I always knew you would go back to her after you found out she got with Liam."

’Again with this,’ Evelyn thought, puzzled by why Veronica was coming up again.

Beth, like everyone else in this family, was aware of the fact that Veronica didn’t like her mother.

Evelyn sighed, regretting that she had come to speak to Beth again. "Do you need your medicine? You’re just tired, Beth. Take it and I will put away your bags for you."

"I am not tired. You just don’t like that I am noticing how you want to crawl your way back to Veronica. She’ll never treat you as good as I have. I’m the one who acted like your daughter for years so why do you question the things I do for you?" Beth asked, annoyed that she still fell behind Veronica.

Beth had Evelyn here yet she was still losing to Veronica.

"I tell you when you’ve assumed wrong. You’re telling me that I am taking money from my husband which is a serious accusation. I have to correct you even if you’re not going to tell your uncle and as for Veronica, why do you keep bringing her up?" Evelyn asked, confused as to why Veronica was always on Beth’s mind.

"You keep bringing her up so how can I not think of her? Just the other day you were celebrating she was going to die-"

"I did not celebrate. You are way out of line," Evelyn spoke over Beth. She stood up, done with their conversation since Beth was out of her mind. "I will take this as you had a little bit too much to drink so you’re acting a fool right now. I love you as if I birthed you. I have spent hours looking after you more than my own child."

Evelyn continued, "I’ve given all that I have to you and if there was ever a day I wanted to think or speak about Veronica, I can. I may not see eye to eye to her but she’s still my daughter. You do not control me so I suggest you get it out of your head that you can tell me not to speak about her."

Beth backed Evelyn. She knew what she saw and Evelyn had been celebrating, looking forward to what money Veronica would have left behind for her. The fact that Evelyn wanted to act like she wasn’t excited gave Beth plenty of reason to think that Evelyn was planning to build a better relationship with Veronica.

"As soon as she could, Veronica turned her back on you and forgot that you raised her in this home. When you were sick, I was there by your side while Veronica was nowhere to be found. I hope you make a good choice in the future," Beth said, pulling out a new makeup wipe as she spoke.

Beth calmed herself down as she took her makeup off. She was never going to have Veronica see that she ended up losing after years of rubbing Evelyn’s love in Veronica’s face. "Like I said, I won’t tell uncle about what you are doing. I’ve had a long day so I want to sleep but when my uncle comes home, wake me up. I need to see him."

Evelyn didn’t have the same confidence that Beth wouldn’t say something about money to Henry. She could only deny it if Beth would mention it. She wasn’t stupid to put the money in plain sight for Henry to get his hands on it.

Evelyn left the room without responding to Beth. Beth was acting strange these days like she told Henry but he would never believe her and mention her parents’ deaths. How many years could they go on making that the excuse?

"Where are her pills?" Evelyn wondered, wanting Beth to sleep for a while.
