The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 53
Chapter 53: Chapter 53
Veronica looked out the car window at the buildings they drove by. It was more peaceful to sit in a car with Liam than to be with a driver and someone else.
She heard his phone vibrating a few times and then it went silent. Someone desperately wanted to see him and she could make a good guess that it was his mother.
"If you need to meet with your family to stop them from bothering you, I don’t mind. I might be their next target since they cannot get you to answer. I would rather you deal with them than me," said Veronica.
This wouldn’t end until Liam talked to his mother or uncle.
"Talking isn’t going to solve anything unless I decide to give them what they want, and I don’t plan to, so there’s nothing to talk about. I would turn off my phone, but I need to keep my eyes on the road. Can you do it?" Liam asked, quickly pointing to his phone.
Veronica picked up Liam’s phone and pressed the button to turn it off. When the screen turned on, Veronica saw the number of missed calls and unread messages. At this point, it would be best for Liam to change his number.
Veronica turned off the phone and put it back where she found it. "My number has changed right?"
"It has. Why?"
"I don’t want to be harassed like you. You have over thirty missed calls. Next, it will be them showing up at our doors. I’m a little curious about your mother’s side of the family. They’re involved in politics and have been for a long time. Are they good people with their work at least?" Veronica asked, curious if the city was at least taken care of.
"No," Liam honestly answered. "They like the power they get from politics and their position helps many of their friends get out of their troubles. It’s a lot of the big businessmen who are always by their side. They look good to the public which is why they’ve been doing this so long but behind closed doors it’s another story."
"Then you should stay away from the political world. Even if you are good, having family ties might pull you into their nonsense. Why does everyone need to get into politics? Your father is a businessman so it should be fine if you want to follow his footsteps," said Veronica.
"That’s the problem. I have a good image for them to use. I’ve never been close to my mother’s family. She took me around them a lot when I was younger out of respect and while she does a lot of planning, she doesn’t like my uncle," Liam revealed a family secret.
On the outside, it always appeared like Adeline adored her brother and vice versa.
Veronica found this a little surprising. "They are good at fooling people since they looked like such a happy family standing together."
"Well, they can’t show a flaw when the public is watching. My mother would like to be the one pushed to become mayor. My grandfather hasn’t shown any interest in investing in her so she does all the planning for their events. She would be happy if my uncle just passed any minute now," said Liam.
"I don’t get it. She has your father and years of watching her family. If that is what she wants, then why doesn’t she branch off on her own?" Veronica asked, seeing the solution as quite simple.
"Because she knows it is a death wish. It sounds like a joke but they are serious about not turning your back on family so she falls in line and wants me to do the same. I will not," Liam said, briefly looking at Veronica before turning his attention back to the road.
"Good. Why should you be forced to do something you don’t want to do? I guess the downside is them stooping low to pull you into it. Like coming after me or messing with your business. Tell me the truth. Can you put up a fight against them?" Veronica asked, worried they might be way over their head.
"I can as long as I make the right friends who don’t like them either. They’ve made a lot of enemies to get to the top and sent some pretty angry people to prison. They probably should have killed them instead. I know it sounds cruel," Liam said after hearing her gasp. "But those people have nothing to lose so they’ll expose everything they know if given the chance."
"This is serious," Veronica realised.
It had been serious before given what happened to her but it was more dangerous than she thought.
Did she know the dangers before she married Liam?
She had nothing to stand on without Liam to be protected so how did she feel safe to enter this world?
All she had was Liam.
"Did you tell me about your family before we decided to get married?" Veronica asked, curious about how she knew. "About this side of them."
"I did. To be correct, I ended it by telling you that it was a shit show and you told me that you were used to that kind of show. I honestly thought you would give up and leave me because it was too much," Liam said a bit surprised years later that she was stuck by him after what he said.
He continued, "You asked if I would join my family and when I said no, you replied that we have nothing to worry about then."
"It’s either that I am overly confident or I was crazy back then. Maybe somewhere in between. It could be that I loved you very much and didn’t want to let go of you which is still stupid considering the danger. I need to understand myself soon," Veronica said.
The most confusing person wasn’t the people around her but her.
"You were special. We’ve avoided them for a long time without any accident and I am going to have it that way again. We just need to tell each other what we are up to so there aren’t any surprises. We worked well together because we communicated so I am begging you, please do not keep any more secrets," Liam pleaded.
He was stuck because she was going off by herself chasing something he didn’t know about.
"I won’t do that again. I’ve seen the result of it and I don’t like having my memories gone. As long as you are honest with me then I will do the same. All I have is you. Liam!" Veronica exclaimed as the car swerved too much for her liking before it went back in place.
"Sorry. You caught me off guard there," Liam replied, his left hand covering his mouth.
Veronica couldn’t believe a simple response almost got them into an accident. "Then I will shut up until we reach where we’re going."
