Chapter 52: Chapter 52

Veronica got up from Liam’s chair when he returned with her water and chips. She stood by the large window to look out at the city as she ate. She didn’t know how he got any work done with a view like this. She was lucky the art gallery didn’t have this kind of view of the city.

"How are the chips?"

Veronica turned around to look at Liam. "They are good. They’re not too salty. Can we get more of these at home and the juice? Just a little so I don’t eat too much at once. I should work on having a little self-control with these chips."

"We normally have some at home. They’re probably being ordered to be stocked up. There are more in the break room if you want another. I think you’re the only one who eats them," said Liam.

"Good. Then I can have them all to myself. Are you ready?" Veronica asked, wanting something else to eat since the chips weren’t enough. "I can go get something else myself if you are not done."

"I’m finished. Just give me a second to log out and shut down the computer. What are you in the mood to eat? Should I decide?" Liam added after she couldn’t make up her mind. "How about some good pasta?"

"That sounds good but first, some cake," Veronica said, excited to have the cake she saw.

"Hmm," Liam replied. He was busy on his phone setting up a reservation at a restaurant.

Now that he thought about lunch, he realised Jerome didn’t take his company card for his lunch to be on Liam.

Veronica and Liam joined where the employees put together the cake and gifts for her.

"Thank you for the cake and all the gifts. I enjoyed opening them and reading the cards that I was in your prayers. I’m glad to be back. Can I say that when I don’t work here?" Veronica wondered, second-guessing her choice of words.

Nora smiled and stepped forward to be the one to speak to Veronica. "You can say that since you’re married to our boss. This is your second home. Right?" She asked the crowd gathering.

"If you say so then I won’t think of it like that. Oh," Veronica said, surprised by Nora holding her hand. "I can’t get the cake if you hold my arm like that."

"Oh, sorry about that," Nora let go of Veronica. "I’m a little too excited to have you back. We all are."

Veronica appreciated it but Nora was too far into her personal space. Liam was slowly easing his way there and he was her husband. She stared at Nora with something on the tip of her tongue but again, Veronica didn’t know what to say.

"Mrs Sterling?" Nora spoke up, confused by why Veronica stared at her. Was Veronica letting her mask slip and showing how much she hated her?

Nora always knew that Veronica didn’t like her but tried to act like she did. Something was just a little off since Veronica was showing her more attention than usual.

Nora was used to Veronica keeping the conversation short and trying to get away from her fast.

What was wrong with Veronica?

Veronica accepted her slice of cake from another employee and learned that Liam wasn’t much of a cake lover. She wondered what they did for his birthday since he didn’t care for cake.

The pair didn’t stay long since they had lunch to get to.

They were alone in the elevator to go down to the parking garage to leave in Liam’s car.

"If you don’t like cake then what did I give you for your birthday?" Veronica asked.

"Cake. Homemade cake you made from scratch. You said the box was too easy. It would either be a big cake or a lot of cupcakes. Whatever you were in the mood to eat. It wasn’t bad," Liam said, noticing her questioning making it herself. "It was good. homemade is better than buying it in the store."

He continued, "I shouldn’t say that since I always bought your cake from a store. There’s a cake place a little far of a drive from here that you like. We found it when we were doing a small road trip after we graduated."

"I don’t mind that it wasn’t homemade. I must have understood that a busy man like you wouldn’t have time to make a cake so," Veronica trailed off.

"I made time for you, always. You just preferred that cake more than anything else. I have made us dinners plenty-"

"You can cook?!" Veronica exclaimed. "Sorry. I don’t know why I thought you couldn’t."

’I had to eat like anyone else when I lived alone so yes I can cook. We only have Edna cook from time to time. Her job is mostly to clean up for us. I can cook dinner for you if you don’t believe me. I’m off work early now and I won’t be coming to the office tomorrow," said Liam.

"Why wouldn’t I believe you? You don’t have anything to gain from lying but if you want to, you can. I want the full experience of why I fell in love with you. The way my memories refuse to come back is making me feel like we will need to start over. Not that it is bad. I am getting a second time to fall in love with you," Veronica said, seeing it as an experience to enjoy.

"What do you feel so far?" Liam asked, curious about her feelings. He knew there wasn’t love but was there anything she felt toward him?

"I don’t know. Maybe I like you? I know that I am attracted to you and it’s slowly starting to grow into something more now that we’re communicating. We need a little more time before I start saying I like you. Can you wait?" Veronica asked.

"I can and I will. Right now I am satisfied with having you back. Also, waking up to you laying on me-"

Veronica covered his mouth. "There are cameras in the elevator. Don’t say that because it could be misunderstood."

The elevator stopped moving and the doors opened to the parking garage.

Liam moved Veronica’s hand from covering his mouth. "We’re married. There’s nothing to misunderstand and I am positive the security isn’t listening to us now. It’s lunch so they have to be switching out."

Liam put his hand out to stop the elevator door from closing on them. "We have reservations to get to," he said, holding the same hand that covered his mouth to lead her to his car.

Veronica didn’t care about the security hearing it. She just wanted Liam to stop reminding her about it.
