The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 51
Chapter 51: Chapter 51
"You came in at the wrong time so you don’t understand. I don’t want him like that and I don’t hate her at all. I just feel guilty for enjoying looking at him when he’s married," Nora explained.
Jerome didn’t take it as that. It wasn’t the first time he heard someone angry with Veronica for coming around since it was a reminder that Liam was married like there wasn’t a wedding band on his hand at all times.
Jerome ignored Nora and searched for something light to eat.
Nora didn’t like that he said nothing to her. He was Liam’s right-hand man in the company. If he said something then Liam certainly would be upset with her. It added to her problem of making up a story about someone making her uncomfortable.
"This isn’t a big deal. Most of the women in the office are a little bothered when she comes around because we feel guilty," she tried to explain again.
"Okay," Jerome replied, hoping she would move on. She said what she said, thinking no one was around. Nora should just move on.
Nora greatly disliked Jerome. He didn’t say much to anyone unless he was passing on a message from Liam telling them something they did wrong. He was just as hard to approach as Liam.
"You know, if you keep this up then you won’t have any friends at work. Everyone talks about you for being like this," said Nora.
"I come to work to make money, not friends. Perhaps that is why I can get my job done so efficiently. If you are trying to get me to not speak about what I heard then give up. Next time don’t share your thoughts out loud if you don’t want anyone to hear them," said Jerome.
Nora balled her hand into a fist. She wasn’t thinking in the heat of the moment because of her mistake. "It would be good to make some friends at work. You wouldn’t be eating lunch alone like you are now. I shouldn’t get in trouble for having a personal opinion about something. Everyone doesn’t need to talk good about her all the time."
"You don’t but if you are so confident you said nothing wrong, why aren’t you leaving me alone? I want to have my lunch alone like you’ve already noticed. Shouldn’t you be on your way?" Jerome asked, finally looking up at Nora again.
Why was she still here when in her head she did nothing wrong?
"I’ll be your first friend in the company and tell you that there used to be a rumour of you liking Veronica. Someone started it because they saw you looking at her in a way you shouldn’t and you were always close to her. It isn’t only the women looking at Liam. You were looking at his wife," Nora said, smiling as she concerned him. "Some thought there was something between you two."
She ultimately frowned when Jerome started laughing. Nothing about this was funny.
"For someone who works in the legal team, you’re a little too careless. I suggest you don’t repeat stupid rumours especially when it concerns a woman who is happily married and a man recently engaged," Jerome advised Nora.
Nora didn’t believe him. "You’re engaged? No one knew about it."
"Well obviously. I don’t have any friends here, remember?" Jerome replied, taking what he needed for his lunch and then headed for the door.
His break could not be wasted trying to talk some sense into Nora. She had to start thinking for herself.
With the rumours Beth was trying to spread Jerome had to pay attention to every little thing said by the women looking at Liam. It wasn’t wrong for them to stare and fantasise about being with him even though he was married, but when they started to mix dreams with reality then the problem came.
Nora wished Jerome had not walked in on her talking to herself. Anyone else in the office would understand her but the loner never would. "What does he get out of being that way? How is he engaged? Stop," she scolded herself.
She was talking to herself out loud again.
Nora walked out of the break room before someone else could enter and put her in a difficult position. ’How is he engaged?’ She wondered again.
Nora never heard a peep about Jerome getting engaged. No one in the office celebrated it. She wouldn’t put him to be a liar since it could easily be found out if he was lying.
’I don’t believe him,’ she thought, regarding Jerome having feelings for Veronica.
Nora noticed the two of them walked into the office today and before, he was always looking at Veronica when she came to visit. ’He’s quick to help her and it looks like his day lights up. Could it be there was something on her part?’
It would be good if Veronica had once slipped up so Liam looking somewhere else for love would be justified. Jerome could be engaged now but there could have been something in the past.
’I can’t try to find something about this now. I need to stop Liam from looking into harassment. My big mouth,’ Nora thought, wishing time could go back so she could fix her mistake.
Nora pulled herself together and headed to where everyone was gathering to enjoy the cake brought for Veronica’s visit. If she could just show Jerome how nice she was to Veronica then this would all go away.
’If I become the next Mrs Sterling then Jerome will be the first to go.’
Nora was glad the blinds were up so she couldn’t see inside Liam’s office. They weren’t together but it still hurt. If Veronica didn’t want anyone lusting her husband then she shouldn’t be showing how much of a good man he was.
Nora wanted to be whisked away from a party too. She made the mistake of not approaching the other Sterlings to have them well acquainted with her. Someone in the family must have noticed her since out of all the employees present, she was invited to the charity event for the second year in a row.
Nora took her phone out of her pocket after hearing the notification for a message. She opened it and for the first time, Beth sent her a message. "Talk about timing," she said. "She rambles too much. She doesn’t have a plan."
Nora left the chat without sending a response to Beth. She should have never counted on a silly little girl jealous of Veronica to help her get what she wanted. She had to do it herself.
