Chapter 47: Chapter 47

Evelyn laughed. "You’re losing your mind. That’s why I came here so I can take care of you. He’s not taking care of you because he wants to keep his secrets hidden. Come with me. I know a good doctor who can help you."

"No, answer what I asked. We had a conversation about my father right here. Should I start looking for him again?" Veronica asked, piecing together what she tried to do.

Evelyn tried not to let her anger show. "Veronica, sweetie. Why would you do such a stupid thing? Your father has been off the radar for years because of his troubled past. If you reach out to him, you’re just going to cause problems for all of us."

’Her father,’ Beth thought. If this could ruin or embarrass Veronica then it was worth a shot. Her uncle would be open to searching for Veronica’s father to get money out of him. ’I want to see what kind of beggar he was."

Veronica couldn’t trust a word that came out of her mother’s mouth. "I’m done here so either look at the art or leave. Jerome," she turned to him, wanting him to take her anywhere but here.

"Veronica," Evelyn approached Veronica. "We need to talk and it isn’t about money. Henry has given up on the building. He has no choice now that Liam is going ahead to buy it and I am not stupid to think you can convince Liam not to buy it. You are my daughter and you almost died. I want to see that you are good."

Veronica didn’t feel any motherly love from Evelyn. These were all empty words so they didn’t have any effect on her.

The memory was clear of how her mother was more interested in Beth while her daughter was alone and confused on the hospital bed. That mother wanted to see if she was good?

Evelyn had the chance to start over after almost losing her daughter and blew it.

"You missed the chance to act like my mother. Just be a mother to her," Veronica said, referring to Beth. She didn’t miss how Beth smiled while basking in winning Evelyn.

"Sugar plum, I know I have made some bad choices but I think it is time we give this a try. You never understood how hard life was for me and blamed me for every little inconvenience. I gave you a good life-"

"What exactly was a good life?" Veronica asked, curious about what her mother gave her. Was it money? Was it gifts to make up for watching her mother raise someone else?

That was what Veronica got from seeing how close her mother and Beth were. It was like she was the one who lost her family and went to live with Evelyn.

"I am glad you found a replacement daughter so please leave me alone. Jerome, where did I put my phone?" Veronica asked.

’Phone?’ Beth’s eyes widened. How did Veronica get her phone?

Beth relaxed after seeing it was a different phone. It was stupid of her to panic considering what she knew.

"Is there somewhere I can sit and not be bothered by anyone?" Veronica asked Jerome.

"You have an office and if you don’t want anyone here, I can escort them out for you," Jerome said, more than willing to toss them out. He didn’t share any emotional connection to these people like Veronica did so he wouldn’t go easy on them.

"Veronica, I am sick and tired of you always being so ready to kick us out or turn your back on us. I put you in the position to meet a member of the Sterling family. Tell me how you would have met him if not for me. I get no thanks for it."

Evelyn couldn’t take more of Veronica acting like she failed her when she put Veronica in a better position. Sure life was hard at times but Veronica ended up winning something big.

"Because I don’t need to thank you," Veronica replied. What else was this family going to ask her to thank them for? "I can’t do this," she muttered. She had enough of all this talking.

Talking to her mother, Sabrina or Beth was useless as it only went in one ear and came out the other. They were never going to accept that she didn’t care about what they had to say or what they felt like they were owed.

"Why am I standing around talking to all of you?" Veronica asked herself. She was giving herself problems by entertaining these conversations. "I’m ready to go to my office, Jerome. I don’t want any visitors."

"This is just like you," Beth spoke up. "You’re going to look foolish when that divorce comes. I hope you’ve been paying attention to the affairs," she mocked Veronica again.

Veronica laughed at Beth’s silly attempt to make her worried about her marriage. Instead of responding, Veronica started to walk away. She had waited too late to realise that she could just ignore some people.

"You’re laughing? You don’t believe me, do you? Even if I have proof on my phone? This would sell for quite a bit but if you ask nicely, I will delete it," Beth said, holding up her phone.

Veronica didn’t stop or look back. Beth got in her head once and she wouldn’t allow it to happen again. Beth had to stoop low to ruin her marriage. ’If she has evidence, she would just release it,’ she thought.

Liam said there wasn’t anyone else and until Veronica saw it herself, she had to trust him. These people were waiting around for the chance her marriage would end and they could swoop in to either mock her or get Liam for themselves.

Jerome was interested in the evidence Beth spoke about. He knew Liam’s every move since he arranged everything for Liam. He worked for Liam but there was some loyalty for Veronica so had Liam been crazy to cheat, he would have dropped hints for Veronica to find out.

’Who is she trying to say Liam cheated with?’ He wondered.

Beth was holding onto this a little too long or was she just counting on Veronica to doubt Liam and find something herself?

Those two weren’t convinced that Veronica had her memories.

"Jerome, have I ever asked Liam to look into my father or did he suspect it was something I was doing in secret?" Veronica asked.

"No. I’ve never heard about your father. Only you know what you were searching for. I am sorry that I cannot be of any help," Jerome replied, apologetically.

"It’s no one’s fault but mine for keeping secrets. Being secretive came back to bite me in the ass. I wonder if it is just me who knows what I was up to. Was it just someone who hated me who had enough of seeing me and tried to kill me or was it someone who didn’t like that I was finding something?" Veronica asked, puzzled by how she got here.
