Chapter 41: Chapter 41

"Fine," Liam answered.

Veronica sat on the bed only now that he would join her later. "It feels different here. It must be uncomfortable to go from sleeping in your bedroom to the guest room."

"It isn’t. Our bedroom is better, but I just need a good place to rest my head. I can get water for you if you need some," Liam offered.

Veronica shook her head. "No thanks. My throat already feels like I have down more water than I can handle. I need to get rid of this feeling. I don’t know if I will be able to sleep if this continues. That feeling and knowing someone tried to kill me is just too much for me to process right now."

Sleeping alone wasn’t a good option at the moment.

"Everything is confusing but I wouldn’t mind if you come back to our bedroom. Just for sleeping," Veronica clarified so there wouldn’t be any misunderstandings.

"Are you sure?" Liam asked, wanting her to think it over.

"I’m sure that I don’t want to sleep alone and who could I invite to bed other than my husband? Just until these dreams end and I can sleep by myself. If you don’t want to, you can say so. I won’t feel any type of way," said Veronica.

She thought he would jump at the chance to do this since it was one step closer to them falling back into their normal routine.

"It’s not that I don’t want to do it, I just had to make sure you were certain. We’ll see how it goes tonight and then decide if you are ready to share a room with me again. I’ll finish up here fast," Liam said, going back to his desk to sign out of his work.

Veronica crawled up onto the bed to wait for Liam. She was nervous as if they were going to do more than sleep tonight.

She thought sitting in the car with him was the hardest thing she had to do on the way to the party but this was harder.

Veronica laid on her right side to look at Liam. He was hard at work and seeing this, she hoped his efforts were acknowledged. How many people in the city are working hard at work right now?

’Did I have late nights too?’ She wondered.

She imagined that if both of them worked late at times it might affect their marriage or were they understanding of each other’s time? Veronica was curious about how they worked through it.

When Liam stood up, Veronica closed her eyes to pretend to be asleep and didn’t know why until after it happened.

"I know you were just awake," Liam called her out on it.

Veronica opened her eyes. "I don’t know why I closed them. I invited you here. I promise I am not regretting this."

"Good because I am a little too comfortable and excited right now. I won’t pass the middle," Liam promised, taking his spot on the right side.

Liam stared at the ceiling while Veronica looked at him. She still wasn’t ready to go back to sleep yet.

"Is this worth it for you? To have your family so upset and wanting to meet with you? I don’t lose anything with this marriage but you do," said Veronica.

Liam turned to face Veronica. "It is worth it for me. I got tired of my family trying to control what I needed to do with my life long ago. You were one of the few things I wanted for myself so I don’t think of what I’ll lose since I have you."

"People must think you are crazy. They might be willing to offer a leg or arm to get close to your family and you’re trying to get away from them. Your father seemed nice but you don’t like him."

"It’s only because I know he plays pretend sometimes. He and my mother are alike which must be why they love each other. He has been nice to you even if it might just be to make me stay happy and run his businesses. I don’t hate him, I just need breaks from him and my mother," Liam answered.

"And do you hate your mother? I think to say that we hate them would be too much. I dislike the things my mother says and I want to be away from her. I wonder if I have ever said I hated her. Have I?" Veronica inquired.

"You’ve never said hate. When it comes to my mother, there is some love for her since I understand the position she is in. Everyone has a role to play in her family and I want no part in it so we’ve clashed for as long as I can remember. Then when she tried every way to end our relationship, that love decreased," Liam explained.

He continued, "I know she wouldn’t have welcomed you with open arms but you were one of the few things I have told them I wanted so I expected just a little effort from those two. This family is all about appearance. My father is nice to you but don’t be fooled by him."

"I will try my best to remember that. I can’t wait to meet your grandfather. I’m curious about what he is like because of how you described him. I will stay far away from your maternal grandfather and uncle. I’m sorry if I am keeping you awake with all the rambling," Veronica said and then closed her eyes to try going to sleep.

"I don’t mind it," Liam replied.

He couldn’t get enough of her talking after what felt like weeks of her lying unconscious when it was only a few days. She could talk as much as she liked and he would never grow tired of it.

Liam stared at Veronica as she forced herself to go to sleep. He wanted to reach out to hold her but had to be satisfied by her coming to see him when she was scared.

Liam turned his attention to the ceiling as looking at Veronica made him miss the old days. He already appreciated all the times laid close to each other but now he wished he had appreciated it even more since this was torture.

Liam closed his eyes, trying to force himself to sleep as well to end this. Veronica ran from her bad dreams and came to torture him by having to stay on one side of the bed. ’Morning, come faster,’ he wished.
