Chapter 40: Chapter 40

Veronica and Liam returned to a quiet home since it was late. Edna had already left hours ago when they headed out to the party.

Liam turned on the lights while Veronica started to take off her jewellery. They spent more time with each other than at the party but it wasn’t a night wasted for Veronica.

"I should get washed up and go to bed," Veronica said as they needed to part.

With separate rooms, she wouldn’t see Liam until morning.

"You should," Liam replied, not happy to say goodbye so soon but he had to. "Remember, we need to leave by nine to get to your appointment on time."

"I will be ready by then. Goodnight Liam," Veronica bid him goodbye. She hoped to become comfortable enough to share a bed with him again but she wasn’t there yet.

Veronica headed upstairs first to get washed up and into her bed.

An hour later, she laid on her bed watching a show she had no idea what it was about. Veronica used the noise to help her sleep and it wasn’t long before she drifted off to sleep.

Dreams for Veronica were strange. There were conversations she had but there weren’t any faces to know who she spoke to. The dots were there for her to connect but she still missed a few pieces.

The awful feeling of water filling her mouth and slowly suffocating her was back. A quick image of a boat flashed in her head with someone looking over the side as she sank into water.

Veronica sat up, terrified by what she hoped was only a dream. It was terrifying to not dream of drowning but to have a dream when there was someone right there only to not see the face of the person in the dream.

Veronica was soaked in sweat despite the chill air coming from the air conditioner. She reached for the remote to turn off the television as what was being said only added to confusing her thoughts.

Veronica touched her head. "What was that?"

She needed water but at the same time, she wanted to avoid it.

It felt all too real to just be a dream.

"It wasn’t an accident," Veronica muttered.

She couldn’t leave what she experienced as just a dream. It had to be a memory she couldn’t let go of. She experienced something similar the day she woke up in the hospital for the first time.

"Someone was there. Why can’t you just remember?" Veronica asked, angry with herself. The answers were just right there.

Veronica couldn’t fall back to sleep just yet even though she wanted to so the memory might finish. She was scared to experience almost dying again. She needed someone to talk to but after glancing at the clock, it was a bit too late to go to Liam.

"If I knock and he doesn’t answer then I will come right back. Only one try," Veronica said as she slid off the bed.

If he didn’t answer the first time then she would come right back to bed and get through this by herself. A big part of her did not want Liam to answer the door.

Veronica exited her room and made her way over to the guest room Liam was using for the time being. She knocked once like she said she would and waited for him to come. "That’s it. He’s not here so just go- Liam! Why are you awake at this time?"

Why did he have to open the door?

"Late night work," Liam replied.

"We are already in the early hours of the morning. You shouldn’t be working so late."

"And you shouldn’t be awake. I said we should be early for your appointment but I didn’t mean you needed to get up this early. Edna won’t be here until eight," said Liam.

"I didn’t come for food. I," Veronica hesitated to tell him. "I had a dream about me falling off the side of a boat and someone was looking over the side as I started to drown. It might not be what happened. My mind could be playing tricks on me but it is still frightening and now, I can’t sleep."

Liam opened his door wider. "You can come inside to sleep here. Isn’t that what you came for?" He asked after she seemed against it. "I will talk to you until you fall asleep and then I will find another room."

Veronica felt bad about having Liam leave another room. "This is why I didn’t want you to answer. You’ve already given up the main room for me and now you want to give up this one. I shouldn’t have come."

"Veronica," Liam held her hand. "You came because you are afraid and it is only me here. I don’t mind moving around once you are good. Come inside."

"Veronica, I will lift you and bring you inside if you don’t move,’ Liam said after she wouldn’t move.

Veronica entered the guest room and noticed that he was doing work like he said because of the open laptop and papers to the side of it. "Are you behind on work because of me?"

"You wanted me to be working while you were in the hospital? I had to put some of it off so now I am playing catch up. I don’t normally work this late but I needed something to do since I couldn’t sleep," Liam revealed.

Veronica turned around to face Liam. "Why can’t you sleep? Is it your family?"

"My uncle and grandfather want to meet with me tomorrow. They are waiting for me to announce that my uncle would have my vote for him. He won’t," Liam gave Veronica a heads up. "Now my mother is reaching out. I wouldn’t mind if you would like to take a vacation right now. We could go somewhere without large bodies of water."

"You said we aren’t the type to run away," Veronica remembered what he said earlier.

"It’s not running away. It’s having a well-needed break out of town. Are you going to stand there or are you going to get on the bed?" Liam asked, going to tidy it for her. "Do you want the TV turned on?"

"No. There’s nothing that I like on and I only use it for the noise. You have a lot of work there," Veronica muttered after getting a better look at the desk now that she was closer. "It would be fine if you come to bed when you are done. It’s big enough for us to not touch while we sleep. I’d feel less guilty about coming if you sleep here."
