Chapter 31: Chapter 31

"A lot of people have been staring at you and practically begging with their eyes for you to come to them or let them approach you. If you need to speak to anyone, I am fine with going with you or standing here until you return," Veronica offered.

"No," Liam replied, knowing it was a terrible idea. "You are not ready for me to leave your side. The second I leave you, someone will crowd you and ask too many questions. You’re not ready for that yet."

"I feel like I am," Veronica muttered.

These people were a bit easier to deal with than she imagined.

"This all reminds me of a show I was watching earlier today. I didn’t start on episode one to know the premise of everything but the drama was much like this. Maybe this is where the writer got it from. You would think people with money had little interest in drama. That was wrong," said Veronica.

Since they had too much time on their hands it seemed they looked forward to drama to pass their time.

"Good to see you know. Do you want something to drink? I might be able to get you something sweet without alcohol. You weren’t much of a drink," Liam revealed.

"I wasn’t? Good, alcohol might just make me look like a fool at this kind of party. Any accident I make won’t go unnoticed since they are still taking photos of us," Veronica noticed so she turned her back to the crowd.

The reporters were left outside but the people inside took it upon themselves to act as paparazzi.

Were they going to sell exclusive photos of them or just post that they were here together?

"We’ve shocked a lot of people by coming here together. They thought our marriage would be over after my incident. It was almost ruined by misunderstandings between us. I see why I need to trust you more," Veronica said as stories were twisted everywhere.

Liam didn’t appear to have a close relationship with his parents because of her. What could he gain from not loving and cheating on her rather than leaving her? Unless he was the type to not want anyone to say I told you so but Liam didn’t seem like that kind of man.

His anger from earlier showed that he was annoyed and had little patience with his mother. It was obvious that he loved her.

Despite what everyone around him said, Liam continued their relationship and protected her from his family.

"I’m sorry," Veronica apologised. "It was off to a rough start on your part but I understand it. I understand this. This world you are part of and now I am part of isn’t easy. No wonder you didn’t want to tell me everything to avoid making me curious."

Veronica stepped closer to Liam to whisper, "I can feel the daggers your mother is throwing at me and I am quite sure I saw my mother here. I am starting to feel like I can’t breathe from all of this."

Liam touched Veronica’s arm to calm her down. "It’s not easy to get used to unless you grow up in this. Come, I can take you somewhere more private."

Veronica gladly followed Liam since she needed a break away from all the stares. Everyone around them was fishing for something to talk about. It was hard to hide when she was walking beside Liam.

"It is hard to have a handsome husband," Veronica accidentally said out loud. "Oh!" She covered her mouth.

Liam looked away from Veronica to hide his smile. This was the second time he had heard this and again he replied, "Should I work hard to become ugly?"

"No," Veronica softly responded. She wasn’t in love with him again but she enjoyed looking at him.

There was one thing Veronica knew about herself and it was that she had good taste in men. Well, from what she knew so far.

Liam took Veronica to a small room filled with chairs and tables not used for the night. "Here," he placed his hand on her waist and lifted Veronica to place her on a stack of chairs. "Tell me when you want to get down."

Veronica had a weird reaction to how Liam treated her that she couldn’t explain. Was she starting to like her husband again? Starting over from the beginning? It was an odd position to be in but if she could fall for him again just as she did in the past, wouldn’t that mean they were meant for each other?

"Veronica? Sweetie?"

Veronica frowned when she heard a voice she remembered and wished she didn’t. "Please tell me that I am mistaking the voice I am hearing. That can’t be my mother."

Liam shared Veronica’s annoyance. "It is."

Evelyn always was like a vulture waiting for the perfect moment to swoop down and ask Veronica for money or help with something else.

Liam knew her presence here was a petty invite to annoy Veronica.

"Veronica," Evelyn called sweetly to her daughter.

"You’ve turned to stalking now?" Liam asked.

Evelyn ignored Liam since it never worked in her favour when he was around. "I want to speak to my daughter alone. It is important. Regardless of how you see me, this is my daughter so I deserve to know how she is. It won’t take long."

Liam was against it since there was only one thing Evelyn could want to speak about and it was money. Henry failed so now they were hoping Evelyn had the charm.

Liam looked to Veronica for her answer. He knew what he wanted to do but didn’t want to come off as controlling to Veronica though he was only trying to protect her. He wished to avoid a repeat of her crying over the things her mother said in secret when she thought he wasn’t around.

"I will speak to her for a moment," Veronica answered.

As heartless as she knew her mother to be so far, Veronica had questions she needed answered. Her mother was currently one of the people she suspected so avoiding her would get nothing done.

Evelyn waited for Liam to leave. It was always quite the show to see how he would listen to Veronica so easily. "I’m impressed. For how you insulted me over the years, you went and got yourself a well-trained man. One with money. Like mother like daughter?"

"We are not alike. I found a man who loves me while you found you who sends you to beg your daughter. You are not here to find out if I am getting better. You want something from me. What is it?" Veronica asked, lacking the patience for her mother’s act.
