Chapter 30: Chapter 30

Beth stared with envy as she saw Veronica standing with Liam. "Why is she here? What is she trying to prove?"

Beth didn’t understand how someone who was not long ago lying in a hospital room with little chance of opening her eyes again was so dressed up at a party like nothing happened. If Beth didn’t know what happened, she would conclude it had been a trick for attention.

Evelyn followed where Beth looked and shared the same confusion. "She must have recovered already. We’re always the last to find out. I hope she is better now and told him the truth so he can stop bothering us. I don’t want to see another police officer at my door or go to the station."

All the questioning of what happened to Veronica made Evelyn feel like a criminal. How many times did she have to say that she was innocent and her foolish daughter decided to go on a boat when she couldn’t swim?

Why bother others when it was Veronica’s silly mistake that almost cost her life?

Beth couldn’t stop staring at the two. They looked normal which made her question how much Veronica remembered about that day.

"Stop staring," Henry told Beth. "You should be mingling to make more friends."

Beth smiled as she looked away from the couple. "I already have plenty of friends, uncle. I don’t want to leave your side to be asked about Veronica. It’s not like we know anything about her. If we get too close to her now, she might act like we troubled her."

Henry glanced at the woman in question. He had waited so long for a moment to come so he could ask her about money. All he needed was for Liam to leave her side. Veronica was easiest to manage when she didn’t have that man at her side.

Henry knew she detested their presence at parties like this one as they reminded Veronica where she had started. She wouldn’t be standing in this room if not for him. He gave her a good life for her to be smart enough to attend the same school as Liam.

Evelyn rubbed Henry’s arm to calm him down. "I will speak to Veronica before she leaves."

"Why?" Beth asked, annoyed by this. "Why do you need to go to her?"

Why did Evelyn need to keep going to Veronica when she had someone standing in front of her who loved her more?

"Don’t," Beth told Evelyn. "You don’t need her. You have me."

Evelyn didn’t take Beth seriously. "I won’t be gone long. I need to get money from her for your uncle. That’s all. What else would I have to talk to her about?"

Beth still didn’t want Evelyn to go. This was her mother now. Whenever Evelyn wanted to approach Veronica, Beth wanted to be right there to make sure the two never became close again.

Veronica couldn’t get back her mother now. Veronica had been too ungrateful to appreciate what she had in the past and now that Beth had completely stolen Evelyn’s love, she wasn’t letting it go. Someone else needed to feel what it was like to not have a mother.

Had Veronica not once rubbed having a mother in Beth’s face, Beth wouldn’t be so eager to take Evelyn for herself.

"You’ll stay at my side," Henry told Beth. He couldn’t have her running off to ruin getting the money. "If you had been more careful when she woke up, you could have gone home with them to take care of Veronica."

"Uncle!" Beth whined. Why should she have to take care of Veronica? "You can get someone else to do that but it is not like Liam would allow any of us in their home."

"You would have been able to look at her finances. I am talking about what could have happened. If you had stayed close to Veronica, it would be easier for me to get my money," Henry argued, putting some of the blame on Beth.

Evelyn let go of Henry and went to Beth’s side. "It’s not Beth’s fault. Veronica never got along with anyone for too long. There was nothing she could have done so please go easy on her. You need to remember how hard this is on Beth to go through something like this again."

Henry couldn’t just calm his anger but he did have to remember the position Beth was in. "Talk to her and get my money. I shouldn’t have to take care of a child that isn’t mine for free."

’You did it for Beth,’ Evelyn thought. He shared blood with Beth but still.

Evelyn needed him to stop throwing the fact she brought a child into this marriage back into her face since she had to take care of Beth. She acted like was ecstatic to help raise Beth in the beginning but as someone who already felt burdened raising one child, Evelyn wasn’t looking forward to doing it again.

It wasn’t only Henry that made sacrifices.

"I see a friend I know. I should go say hello," Beth said, excusing herself.

It was a bit of a surprise to see Nora present at the party.

"What are you doing here?" Beth questioned Nora.

Nora looked around to see who was watching. "Why are you approaching me?"

It wasn’t a secret that Liam hated the Harpers so if Nora was seen with them, Liam wouldn’t be happy. Nora didn’t want to be on the receiving end of his anger.

"We sat together once but that doesn’t mean you should approach me like this. Go away," Nora shooed Beth away with a flick of her wrist. What was Beth thinking right now?

"You don’t get to dismiss me. Don’t forget that I have-"

"That silly little recording?" Nora laughed. "There’s nothing on there to harm me. I just didn’t like that you recorded what was said between us. I can’t trust you, not like I did in the first place."

Nora saw Beth as someone who just knew how to talk.

"I think I will back out of your plans seeing that Liam is here with his wife. How disappointing," Nora said, glancing at the couple in their own world. It should be her out there with him but it wasn’t. It was nearing time to leave the party.

"I haven’t started yet so why would you back out? I’m preparing an exciting show so if you leave my plans you are going to need to buy your way back in. Starting with a few new bags," Beth said, eyeing the one Nora held now.

Nora didn’t see this as too much for herself. "Fine. I’ll wait a little longer. Entertain me, Beth."
