The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 26
Chapter 26: Chapter 26
"Liam, is there a party we had to attend? I looked at the calendar on my laptop and saw a lot of events for this month and the next few. There was a reminder about one soon. Is it important?" Veronica asked.
"It was but not anymore. I already sent a response that we cannot be there," Liam replied.
"But it was important?" Veronica continued to ask. "I put a little note so as not to forget about it. I must have thought it was important for you. I wouldn’t mind going."
"You don’t remember anyone’s faces," Liam reminded Veronica.
"Then, we can search their names and you tell me about them. I can even write it down in case I start to forget. I know I have to be careful but I also want to fall back into my daily routine. It might help me to remember something and being at home is boring," Veronica said, tired of seeing the four corners of their home.
Liam knew she underestimated just how big the party he assumed she wanted to attend was. There was only one she would have listed as important. "There will be reporters there and people you didn’t like."
"That is why I suggested you show me their pictures so I know who to avoid. I am bored and it was important for you to go there. If you don’t want to take me, you can go alone. I will not be upset. A lot," Veronica added as she didn’t want to be left alone at home.
"Fine," Liam gave in. He had to let her go ahead with her plans and be right next to her should it fail. "It’s a charity party organised by my father so he will be there along with my mother and some relatives. Your family won’t be there unless my mother wants to make you uncomfortable."
"With your mother, how should I handle her or should I just avoid her?" Asked Veronica.
"Unfortunately, you can’t avoid my mother. I have a feeling she already knows you don’t have your memories so she will enjoy the moment with you like this. Don’t do as she says. Don’t look afraid when you see her. She feeds off fear," said Liam.
Veronica frowned, wary of the woman she had to face. "You described her like a monster."
’More like a demon," Liam corrected Veronica. "I love my mother sometimes but she has her ways. My mother’s side of the family wasn’t raised hearing no. Their ties in the government make them a headache to deal with."
"Veronica," Liam’s tone changed. "This isn’t some simple family drama. These people can and will harm you if you give them the chance. We’re starting fresh with you knowing nothing. I am not hiding you to keep secrets from you but to protect you."
It was more than just his mother trying to find a way to separate them.
"I understand. I was thinking of acting like I was back to normal until my memories came back. I just have a feeling that I will remember everything. This is just for a short while and then it will all come back. You will have your wife again," Veronica said, hopeful this would have him go ahead with her plan.
"I already have my wife back. She just needs some time," Liam replied.
"I do have one question. If your family is so dangerous, why did you go ahead with marrying me who doesn’t have a way of protecting herself?" Veronica asked, curious about what was said in the past.
Had they thought about parting or planned how they would handle his family?
"I thought about it and spoke about it with you. That is part of why we kept our relationship a secret for so long. The other part was you did not want your family to start approaching me for money. I can protect you but you have a habit of dealing with your things by yourself. You don’t like help so we ended up here. I don’t know what happened to you," said Liam.
Of all the things he knew happening in the city, it was a bad look that he couldn’t tell what his wife was up to for the last few weeks.
"I regret letting you go on with your secrecy instead of asking what bothered you. This could have been avoided if I did. I don’t know why you felt like you owed me when I wanted to do something for you. We’re married," Liam said, trying to understand her past actions.
"You shouldn’t blame yourself. It sounds like I was a bit stubborn by wanting to do everything myself. If my family was asking for money, maybe I didn’t want you to know. I feel small here," Veronica said, looking back at the big house. "Like I am living in your shadow."
Veronica continued, "You are Liam Sterling, born into this big family with all this riches and power. I am just the girl whose mother didn’t want her to open her eyes. I understand wanting to fix my mess myself. Haven’t I gotten too much from you? How did I afford an art gallery?"
It was a question Veronica lingered on after remembering Liam said she had to rent a small apartment. It was obvious the money for the gallery came from him and it was most likely why others viewed her as a user.
"I’m curious about Veronica Sterling. What secrets did I have from you? What was I like when facing others? I want to be her right now even if I have to play pretend for a while so please, let me join you. Just teach me how to be me," Veronica pleaded.
Despite what Liam thought, he knew her best.
"Okay," Liam agreed. If it was going to make her happy then he could do this.
"Another thing. I would like to kill the story that my memory is gone. I know it will be hard because people who dislike me will test it, but I want to try. This memory loss makes me look weak. Weak isn’t how I have heard myself described. I need you," Veronica said, reaching for Liam’s hand.
She continued, "Nothing about my doctor visits or what happened in the hospital should be leaked. My family will talk but we can make it seem like they are telling a lie. Can’t we?"
Liam held Veronica’s hand, not wanting to let go after she reached out to him. "We can."
"Good. I have this strong feeling that they are involved in what happened and I- We," Veronica corrected herself. "Are not going to let them get away with it. This time, I won’t be secretive with you. I promise."
