The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 24
Chapter 24: Chapter 24
"There is something that bothers me. I saw all the interviews from her family. This feels like one giant grab for attention from all of them. Is Veronica hurt or is she pretending to be to give her family something to talk about? Who looks for the Harpers these days," Sabrina asked, wishing the family would be silent.
"I like the Harpers," Adeline revealed, surprising Sabrina. "You can buy them. Aside from anyone who can help me financially, I like the people I can buy. They would do anything for money which is why I am waiting for them to talk some sense into Veronica."
"Why would they do that when they can hold onto Liam? He’s surrounded by a gold-digging family. Look at her mother. Liam should have known something was wrong just from that," said Sabrina.
"There are a lot of women and men like Evelyn around us. You should get used to it and then block it out. One way or the other, they go back to where they belong. You just need to wait," Adeline said, not worried about Evelyn.
It always amused her to see how much Evelyn loved money that she would throw her daughter under a bus. If only the rest of the city was so easy to buy.
Sabrina needed them gone sooner. "She has a cousin named Beth. I should get close to her. How much do you think I could buy what she knows for? I heard they are buying a building in a rundown area. What are they thinking?"
Adeline shared Sabrina’s curiosity. Did the Harpers have money to spare on a building in an area where no one frequented? "Don’t think about them. Think about what you will wear to the party. You should match what I plan to wear a little bit. I already consider you as part of the family."
Sabrina smiled. "I was thinking red would fit the occasion and if Liam could have a red tie, that would be the cherry on top."
Adeline picked up her phone to arrange it. "I can make it happen."
She wasn’t welcomed inside Liam’s home but it didn’t mean her little spies had not gotten in.
Sabrina’s smile remained but as she watched Adeline, she wondered if she would be able to put up with Adeline as a mother-in-law. She couldn’t come running each time Adeline needed something and Sabrina certainly wasn’t going to bother Liam about politics.
She knew Liam long enough to know that any mention of politics would anger him.
Sabrina raised her glass to her lips, sipping on her wine. She had not forgotten about Liam even for a second. What gave the little vixen the right to come in and ruin everything? To have Liam as she did?
Sabrina gripped the stem of glass in her hands. It pained her to think of Liam in bed with Veronica when it should be her. He was married right now but Sabrina couldn’t end her thoughts about being with him as more than a friend.
If there was ever a time for Adeline to use her cards to get rid of Veronica, it was now. Sabrina couldn’t stand Veronica being with her man.
"Done," Adeline announced.
"You do not know how much I look up to you, Adeline. Since you have done so much for me, allow me to treat you. I have to remain special in your eyes since there must be a lot of women who will spoil you to get to Liam. I hear there is a limited edition bag you have been eyeing," said Sabrina.
Adeline was impressed with Sabrina looking into what she wanted. It was small things like this which made Sabrina stand out above the others. "I will never turn down when someone is kind enough to get me an expensive gift. You won’t find too many people bold enough to try buying my love. Eat first."
Adeline looked away from Sabrina to the man snapping pictures of them. She also had a good gift prepared for Veronica.
Away from where Adeline sat with Sabrina, Veronica sat on a couch looking through old videos of herself and Liam. It was still strange to see herself smiling so much with Liam.
They were happily in love Veronica concluded by the time she reached the last video. She was eager to see more of her and Liam together.
Contrary to what she thought before they fit each other. There was a warm feeling inside her when she watched the videos and looked at the photos of them on what seemed to be a vacation.
It made Veronica feel guilty that she couldn’t at least remember his face.
"Should I do something for him?" Veronica wondered.
In one of the videos, Veronica saw how happy Liam was when she surprised him with a special dinner. The only problem was there wasn’t a special occasion for them to celebrate.
"I am alive so that should count," Veronica said, deciding to go through with it.
She was hopeful that by doing something like this, her old habits would come naturally to her and she would start to remember her life.
Veronica exited the office space said to belong to her and headed down to the kitchen where Edna was watching the news as she mopped.
Veronica was momentarily distracted by a report of a car crash. The name of the victim looked familiar but like everything else, Veronica couldn’t remember why. "Is that woman someone I know?"
"Oh, Mrs. Sterling," Edna touched her chest. "You scared me. I didn’t know you were here. I don’t know if you knew her but I have never heard you say her name nor has she come here. It was a hit-and-run. She’s lucky to be alive. Can I get you a glass of water or a platter of sliced fruit?"
Veronica continued to stare at the television. It was good news that the woman walked away from the crash and for once, the news wasn’t focused on her. Veronica didn’t want it to be another person almost losing their life to make the news move on but she welcomed a small break.
"No," Veronica answered Edna. "I was hoping you wouldn’t mind stopping what you are doing now to prepare a special lunch for Liam. I could surprise him with it when he comes home or maybe take it to him as a surprise. I’m tired of staying inside."
"Mr. Sterling called a few minutes ago to inform me that he would be coming here to have his lunch and then he would return to work. I have already started," Edna said, pointing to the food she was keeping warm. "There’s a bench outside that points out to the shore. You liked to sit with him there."
"Oh, I see," Veronica said, looking out the large kitchen window. Her plan was ruined. "I will sit out there until he comes."
