The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 22
Chapter 22: Chapter 22
Evelyn looked out the window of the car she arrived in with Henry. She watched nervously as he returned with a frown meaning it had not gone well just like she told him it wouldn’t.
What was Henry expecting to get from Liam when that man had never treated them like in-laws?
Evelyn exited the car, keeping the door open for her husband. "How did it go?"
Henry threw his hat into Evelyn’s hands. "I told you not to bring that girl with you. I shouldn’t have let you convince me to bring her into my home. Twelve years of taking care of a child that wasn’t mine and this is the thanks I get."
Evelyn smiled despite being embarrassed after Henry threw his hat at her. "Beth needed someone to play with. If Veronica wasn’t there, who would Beth have to play with at home?"
’I didn’t want to bring her,’ Evelyn thought.
Veronica was what stuck out most to give away she had been married and shared a child with another man before Henry. She didn’t plan on bringing Veronica along for her new life but it worked out at the time that Henry needed a child for Beth to play with.
How fast he had forgotten.
Henry didn’t want to hear about Beth needing someone to play with. He could have his peers send their daughters to cheer her up after her parent’s death.
Henry got into the car first and made himself comfortable. "Fix this and fast. I want that money. I took care of you and your daughter for longer than I needed to."
"Honey," Evelyn clung to his arm after taking her seat beside him. "It wasn’t all your money. I had the money from her father."
Evelyn folded her lips as Henry glared at her.
"That money doesn’t compare to what I had to spend. Private schools, clothes, feeding her," Henry counted on his fingers. "That little money he sent you was nothing. I would have the money I need for the building if not for her. I told you to leave that family behind."
Evelyn bit her lip. Having Veronica around was convenient no matter what he thought now. "I did. You were the one who found it hard to have her leave Beth. Beth would cling to Veronica. Consider it the price of making your niece happy. Don’t you love Beth?"
"I do," Henry muttered. She was all he had as a memory of his sibling. "I get annoyed thinking about how she looked forward to those arranged dates just to hear that Veronica had been dating him all along. She’s a little gold digging-"
"Henry," Evelyn interjected before he could go too far. "Veronica doesn’t have it in her to pull off getting Liam by planning. We’re missing something."
To Henry, they weren’t missing anything. Veronica attended the same school as Liam with the plan of seducing him and it worked. That child was out to get revenge for no reason.
Henry loosened his tie which started to feel like it was choking him. "Do something to make her give us money. You’ve done it before so do it again. It should be easy now that she doesn’t have her memories. If you don’t find a way to get money, I know what to get rid of to save me some money."
Evelyn let go of Henry’s arm. He was speaking out of his ass now that he was upset. Was he not aware that if she walked away from this marriage, she was taking half of what belonged to him?
"Adeline Sterling would pay us what you need if we could get Veronica to leave Liam. Or maybe, you should just forget about this building. You have enough to buy a different one. What’s so special about this one that we are almost broke over it?" Evelyn asked.
The building started to annoy her since it was pulling all their funds to get. There were plenty of other buildings to afford so why stick to this one?
Henry opened his mouth to tell her but then decided to keep it to himself. Too many people shouldn’t know about the big project which would happen there in the future.
Those who knew about it already had a building or land in the area and he was one of the few left to find out about it.
"I want it," Henry replied.
Evelyn laughed since he didn’t trust her. She needed him to succeed so she could succeed so what did he think she would do with what information he gave her?
Henry looked outside at the cars they passed by and it was here he remembered what Liam said. "There are cameras all over the town these days, aren’t they? They increased after all the accidents and insurance scams."
Evelyn opened her purse to search for her phone. She didn’t understand his interest in cameras and wasn’t interested in it herself. "I believe so," she answered to appease him.
"Liam brought it to my attention how many cameras there are these days."
Evelyn froze. Why would Liam mention that to Henry? Had he seen something?
"You," Henry faced his wife. "Did you try to kill her?"
Evelyn laughed at the accusation. "Why would I want to kill my daughter after all the pain I had to endure to bring her into this world? Besides, we were all together that day."
"No, we were not. We were together at the start, went our separate ways, and then met again later that night. I covered for you because I can’t have you damage my name. Tell me now so I can cover it up, did you try to kill her?" Henry asked again.
Evelyn was offended he could think she would kill her daughter. "No, I did not. I wasn’t the only one who was missing for most of the day. I have my suspicions about you."
"She’s the only tie to the Sterling family so why would I kill her?" Henry denied the accusation.
Evelyn was left with only one possibility. "Then Beth-"
"Beth?! You would bring her up when she was good to your daughter? If not for Beth, I would have sent Veronica out of my home and Beth was most shaken up by the news. Don’t you ever mention her again," Henry warned Evelyn. "It’s someone else who went after your daughter. That attitude from Veronica made her have it coming."
"Right," Evelyn replied, leaning back on her seat. She knew that Beth couldn’t hurt a fly but since they were pointing fingers at each other, she had to ask about Beth. "Silly me."
