The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 19
Chapter 19: Chapter 19
"Why are there divorce papers here?" Veronica repeated after there wasn’t a response fast enough the first time.
"It is not what you think it is," Jerome said, walking toward Veronica to take the documents.
"How is it not what I think when I can read they are divorce papers? If our marriage is so perfect, why are there divorce papers in his office?" Veronica asked, not believing anything she was told now.
"It is my fault that they are there instead of thrown away. If your husband knew there was another here, he would be angry with me. I was the one who put away most of the documents here. His mother kept sending divorce papers and when Liam found them, he threw them away," Jerome explained.
"If he keeps throwing the papers out, why didn’t you think to throw this one out? None of you make it easy for me to trust you for long," Veronica said, shaking her head as she refused to believe Jerome.
Was she asking for too much?
"I got ahead of myself. During the time you were unconscious, he had been in a foul mood. He snapped at his mother in a way I had never seen. I thought by leaving this here, he would deal with it once and for all. He never noticed it was there. I’m sorry," Jerome apologised.
Jerome worried that his actions would lead to Veronica not trusting Liam. He had jumped too far trying to meddle to have Liam set more of his anger on his mother. It had slipped his mind that the divorce papers were still there.
"I am sorry," Jerome apologised again. "His mother is the one sending the papers. It is not Liam who thinks of divorce."
Veronica gripped the papers in her hands. This was too much. What did his mother think to accomplish about sending papers over and over again?
"I need to ask him about this and I will need to bring up what you told me. I have to hear it from him and see his reaction. I have to be careful and not blindly trust anyone even if it is the man I was once in love with," said Veronica.
She could never be too careful, especially in this current state.
Jerome looked like he was telling the truth and appeared apologetic but looks could be deceiving.
"Do not move," Veronica said, reaching for her phone to search for Liam’s name. Before Jerome could inform Liam of what she found, she had to call him first. This was one of the only ways she could trust what Jerome told her.
Jerome wasn’t worried about Liam since he had told the truth. Edna could testify to the many divorce papers ripped up by both Liam and Veronica. He had even seen one be thrown into a fire.
"It is me," Veronica said when Liam answered. "What is-Oh," she said, surprised when she saw Liam’s face.
Veronica extended her hand to give him a good view of her. She noticed his smile which she knew wouldn’t be there after what she had to say. "Why are there divorce papers in your office?"
Just as Veronica suspected, his smile fell. Anger replaced his happiness when she called him.
"Who is with you?"
Veronica looked beyond the phone at Jerome standing in the same spot. Part of her felt guilty for having to repeat what he told her. She partly regretted calling Liam. Was it old feelings of caring for him that made her feel guilty?
"Jerome is here with me," Veronica replied, turning the phone to Jerome.
"Jerome, why is one of those papers still in my office?" Liam asked.
"It is my fault. I placed it there for you to see that your mother sent another. I shouldn’t have stepped over the line. I am sorry," Jerome apologised.
"I don’t plan to divorce you, Veronica. I never thought about it and I never will. I don’t know how to make you trust me since it was found in my office. I’ve thrown them out and dealt with my mother sending them. Had I known one waz there, it would have been gone," Liam said, hopeful that Veronica would believe him.
His mother sent them in hopes he would have a moment of waking up as she called it. His mother’s assistant was banned from delivering what his mother sent then she found other ways of getting it to him like sending it to his other office and Veronica’s art gallery.
Liam shared Veronica’s anger over those papers. "No more will show up. I promise. I love you more than you know, Veronica. Our marriage is not on a downward spiral. The people around us just want it to be."
"Your mother hates me that much?" Veronica questioned, not understanding how one person could go so far. It made her think of Adeline wanting to meet her.
Was it possible his mother was the culprit? Adeline’s actions pointed to her.
"I will believe you," Veronica decided. "Please don’t make me regret trusting you."
"You will not. Jerome," Liam called for the man in the room. "Dispose of that now."
"Yes sir!" Jerome replied.
On the other end of the phone, Liam was disappointed Veronica had not called for something else. She called for something which made her doubt his love for her.
A small conversation about what she was doing with her time would satisfy him and then if she would ask about him.
"I will see you when you return. Goodbye," Veronica awkwardly waved goodbye.
For a moment, it looked like there was something he wanted to say but he returned her goodbye and ended the call.
Veronica was left thinking about how the call ended. "That was," she paused, not knowing how to explain it.
Veronica turned to face Jerome. "I understand wanting to show him that his mother still meddles but it created a misunderstanding. The me who knew of this would not be angry now but I know nothing."
Eventually she would find little things hidden which would either be harmless or bring something bad.
She continued, "Are there anymore surprises from you? I don’t want to blame Liam for it. If my marriage was good, I don’t want to ruin it due to misunderstandings."
"There isn’t any more," Jerome promised.
"Good. I don’t want to feel that again. If you don’t mind, I need your help to find my bank statements," said Veronica.
The misunderstanding ruined her time in the room and now she wanted to get out fast.
’I didn’t tell him why I am here,’ Veronica realised.
Would Liam think she was snooping around?
