The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 101
Chapter 101: Chapter 101
The next day, Veronica and Liam put their investigation on hold to attend a party for a friend of Liam’s which Veronica now knew to be her friend as well. While Veronica wanted to see what else Liam found in her phone, she liked the break to see who they were friends with.
It was evident by now that with Liam still having her phone he was going to solve and deal with what happened to her by himself and not leave it up to a court.
Veronica was in awe of the large home they stopped in front of. It made many of the homes in their neighbourhood look small. "I’m surprised you would want to come to a party with so many people present. I thought you said he has small intimate parties with close friends."
"That’s what he said but I could never fully trust what Clark says. Sometimes he has small parties to give us a break from people who feel the need to take pictures every second but then he holds big parties like this as a promotion for whatever product he’s just come out with. He’ll even do it on his birthday," said Liam.
"That sounds boring but I guess it would be fun to make money on your birthday. Is anyone going to be here? Like a Harper, Sterling, or a Smith?" Veronica asked, not in the mood to deal with any of their relatives.
Veronica had enough of speaking to all of them. This night was meant to be a break.
"I don’t think anyone from the Sterlings has ever attended other than me and only my cousins from the Smiths might be here. I’ve seen Beth around these parties one or two times because he likes to use anyone with a following. Want me to see where she is now?"
Veronica shook her head. "I don’t want to know. Beth is the easiest to handle and I almost want to see the state she is in now. It would be surprising if she showed up knowing you would be here. I’m curious what they are planning since they’ve been so quiet. No," she stopped herself. "I don’t want to think about them. I want to have a good drink and enjoy the night."
Liam got out of the car and went around to Veronica’s side to open her door. Clark’s parties were normally eventful like he was stuck in his college days so Veronica wouldn’t be bored at any point during the night.
Veronica accepted Liam’s hand to help her out of the car. "So, I knew Clark for as long as we were together. Did I get along well with him? He didn’t secretly hate me too?"
Liam laughed at the idea that Clark would hate her. "No. He’s one of our close friends. Rather than hate you, he liked that you got my family so riled up. I remember he called me after our engagement was announced and told me that I owed him because his father was grilling him about the women he dated."
"Clark always dated women his family would like so they would get off his back but as soon as he found his way to not needing him, he got engaged to a woman who was once his assistant. They spent so much time together basically telling him what to eat and how to eat that they fell in love. It was judged a lot," said Liam.
"Because she worked for him? It’s not wrong for them to fall in love. So, like you, has he cut off his family?" Veronica asked, curious if Liam’s friends consisted of men marrying against their parent’s wishes.
"No," Liam shook his head. "They’ve accepted her and offered to pay for the wedding. At the end of the day, they realised that it was almost a miracle that Clark got married with the way he was going. His fiancee still works for him or rather with them."
"That’s good that his family accepted her. I’m just a little curious about one thing. Are your friends who pick women their family won’t like? Are you a rebellious group? I don’t mind," Veronica added since it was funny.
"We’re not. It just happened that Clark and I were in a similar situation but he ended better than mine. The others gladly went on blind dates their mothers set up because they were thinking about their businesses or they just married who they wanted. Not everyone is unfortunate to have a family like mine," said Liam.
"I must have bad luck. I went and picked one of the unfortunate ones. Wait," Veronica stopped walking after noticing something odd. "I’ve seen that car before," she said, watching a car that slowly drove by. "It was there when I visited my mother. I remember because of how reckless it was driving. Is it just here again? Did you see anyone get out?"
Veronica was feeling a bit paranoid but it was strange that she would see it again even if it was just a day later. "Maybe someone from my mother’s building got an invite. I need to relax."
While Veronica moved on from thinking about the car and was ready to go inside, Liam still watched the car. The windows were tinted which was strange considering most of the people attending the party wanted to be private but nothing was a coincidence when it came to Veronica.
Liam remembered the licence plate and sent the number for Jerome to check it. He would rather be safe than sorry.
Liam put away his phone right after since the party was to be used for them to have a break from thinking about anyone. He led her inside in search of Clark who would want to see her.
When they went inside, the first thing Veronica noticed was the large pool. She wanted to question why anyone needed a pool so big but considering the size of the home which could easily be mistaken for a hotel, the pool made perfect sense.
"It looks deep," Veronica noticed from where she stood.
She was bold enough to sit at the edge of the pool she had at home with Liam to stick her feet in the water but this pool here was frightening. She suddenly had those thoughts about drowning again and it wasn’t pleasant.
Veronica didn’t want to be the person who came to a party like this and freaked out about drowning. She looked away from the pool and turned her attention to the guest. So far, there was anyone she knew which was a good sign that maybe she might enjoy the night.
