“Lady Rubia, it’s nearly time.”
“Sigh… I’ll be out soon. Go on to the banquet hall.”
“No, I’ll wait—”
“Celly. What did I just say?”
“… Understood.”
The shadow lingering by the door hesitated, then faded away.
“Anyone listening would think I’m a complete witch. Bastards…”
I shoved my belongings into the bag, glaring at my reflection.
The dazzling white hair and blue eyes still felt alien. Gone was the radiant blonde hair and golden eyes inherited from my late mother.
To a stranger, nine out of ten… no, all ten would likely call me beautiful.
After all, these were the unique traits of a chosen priestess.
But I despised every strand of this hair, loathed both eyes with a fury that threatened to drive me mad.
I wanted to tear it all out. Every last bit.
I tried countless times to end it all. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
But the world wouldn’t let me die. It wouldn’t let me take my own life.
As a priestess, my life was deemed too precious to end in such a place. There was somewhere I had to be, something I had to do, so they wouldn’t leave me in peace.
Just five years ago, I was an ordinary girl. A slightly mischievous, but otherwise normal girl. A small house in a small village. I never once thought my life was unfortunate.
An academy? Who cares? I didn’t need to go. Meat that everyone else ate? I was content with just vegetables.
As long as I had my one remaining family member, my little sister, nothing else mattered.
But then disaster struck our village.
Just a handful of magical beasts. Barely ten or so.
It was the kind of threat one renowned knight could have easily handled.
But our small village didn’t have a knight—not even an apprentice.
Because, apparently, our village was considered “safe” from such threats. They didn’t even bother to station a single ordinary knight, claiming it wouldn’t be worth the cost.
The bakery lady was torn in half. The blacksmith’s brother exploded. The guard’s head rolled across the ground. The girl from the clothing shop was violated even after death.
The little boy who used to tease me… his sister… the man next door… the grandfather who tended the garden… the grandmother who always scolded me…
People I knew. People I didn’t know. A newborn baby. The mother who had just given birth. My mother’s grave.
My sister…
She died. She was dismembered. Her blood splattered across my face. Her teeth were ripped out. Her limbs rolled across the ground. Her intestines soaked my clothes.
Even after all that, she protected me. My 15-year-old sister. That frail little girl. The one who never once complained. The one who matured far too early.
She was torn to pieces right before my eyes.
And yet, I survived.
Just as I was about to die at the hands of those beasts, the knights finally arrived.
But this was supposed to be a safe village, right? There was no threat from magical beasts, right?
So then, what the hell were these things?
Why was everyone dead? Why was my sister dead?
Why did they come to save me now?
They said I’d been chosen as a priestess. That they’d come to rescue me because I was destined to save the world.
I was told I would save the world. Me.
“Bullshit…”
I screamed. I drank poison. I hanged myself. I slit my wrists.
They stopped my mouth. Made me vomit it all out. They cut the noose from my neck. They healed my torn veins.
They told me a priestess couldn’t die like this. That I had to live for their sake—for the sake of the world.
If I had been chosen just a bit earlier, if they had come just five minutes sooner…
My sister might still be alive. I might not have been broken this badly. Maybe I wouldn’t have lost the will to save the world.
No.
If I hadn’t been chosen as a priestess, I could have died alongside her.
I hate you all.
The people who look at me and call me beautiful disgust me. Whether beasts or humans, I just want them all to die.
I hate this world. Everything I see fills me with loathing.
I won’t save the world. I won’t save anyone. Let you feel the pain of losing someone precious.
I packed up the rest of my things and tied a rope securely to the window.
I looked down.
The ground seemed impossibly far from this sixth-floor window.
But so what?
I can’t die anyway.
Not until I’ve saved this wretched world. I can’t die in such a pathetic way.
I’d already found an adventurer to escort me.
I submitted a special request, and fortunately, they accepted.
A girl who’s been causing quite a stir lately.
A blind girl who can’t see my face, my hair, or my eyes.
Yet, she had risen to the silver rank as an adventurer.
She seemed like the perfect choice to escort me.
Before I jumped, I looked up at the sky, at the one watching me.
You see me, don’t you, goddess?
I’m going to run away today. Right now.
If you don’t like it, come stop me yourself.
With that thought, I grabbed the rope and jumped.
Hoping, just for once, that I might die.
***
I looked up at the sky.
Or rather, I sensed the ceiling of the guild above me.
I just used my inner vision to “see.”
As always, I prayed to the gods.
Please, just let me grow 1 cm taller.
And, if possible, please let my client be a decent person…
I finished my prayer and approached the client sitting across the way.
“Um… H-hello…”
Luckily, the client was a woman.
But… something seemed off about her.
She kept glancing around nervously, her eyes darting back and forth.
She’s not… a criminal, is she?
“Ahem, hello. Are you Shin Noah?”
The client’s soft voice reached my ears.
Her voice is so delicate… and, wow, incredibly beautiful.
Also…
And also…!
Her chest is absolutely enormous.
It’s outrageous. Wickedly huge.
How is that even possible? Is that size realistic…?
It’s like I have a head on each side of my neck. Wow…
“Yes…”
“Nice to meet you. How about we find somewhere quieter to talk? It’s a bit too noisy here.”
The client frowned as she looked around, her facial muscles contorting with irritation.
Even though I couldn’t see, I had become familiar with the bustling atmosphere over the past two months. But for a regular girl, this place would be overwhelming.
Also, her absurdly voluptuous figure was drawing attention, even hidden under her robe.
I nodded in agreement.
“Where should we go…?”
“Hmm, I’m not familiar with the area. Could you perhaps lead the way?”
Uh-oh.
This was a challenging task.
I don’t know the area either…
“Oh, um… uh…”
What should I do?
Should I take her to my room?
That would be awkward…
Even though she seems rich, what if she steals my stuff?
Plus, the monster materials I’ve harvested are strewn about. It’s not dirty, but it might look a bit… unsettling.
“Is there really nowhere we could go?”
Her frustrated voice broke my thoughts.
The mission already felt like it was slipping away… No, I can’t lose this!
I can’t lose my 30 gold!
I started sweating nervously, trying to think.
Suddenly, one place came to mind.
The one place where my socially awkward self felt most at ease.
“Oh…! I-I just remembered. Please follow me this way…!”
The client, eager to get out of the noisy guild, quickly stood up and followed closely behind me.
I guess the adventurers here must have scared her quite a bit. It would be intimidating just hearing their gruff voices.
But the place I had in mind was quiet, so I figured she’d appreciate it.
How did I come up with such a perfect solution in this situation?
Even with my intelligence stat set to the bare minimum, I guess my original smarts still come through.
Hehe, I’m a genius.
Grinning with pride, I led her out of the guild.
***
“Miss Noah.”
The client’s cold voice pierced through me like ice.
“Yes…?”
Oops, I bit my tongue.
“Is this the place you had in mind?”
“Y-yes… Don’t you like it…?”
“Sigh…”
I could hear her grinding her teeth as the muscles in her jaw tensed.
What’s wrong with it? It’s quiet! There are no prying eyes, and no one’s around… except for one person, but he’s not paying attention to us!
“It’s quiet, sure. No one’s watching. But…”
“…Right? Hehe…”
“Hehe…? What’s so… never mind.”
The client rubbed her forehead and leaned in to whisper into my ear.
“This is a blacksmith’s shop.“
“That’s right…?”
Yes. It was the blacksmith’s shop.
The one place where I could rest in peace.
Most adventurers don’t bother coming here, since they prefer to maintain their equipment themselves to save money. So, the blacksmith shop is always empty.
But because I’m terrible at that kind of thing, I’ve become a regular!
The best part is that the blacksmith himself is extremely quiet.
The only words he’s ever said to me are:
“30 silver.”
“Ready by 10 AM tomorrow.”
“We’re closed.”
“Is it urgent?”
“I got it.”
He’s the perfect blacksmith for someone like me!
Also, even if I just sit around, he never bothers me or even looks my way. He just quietly goes about his work.
It’s like this blacksmith shop exists just for me!
“Don’t worry. He won’t bother us. It’s totally fine.”
“Wow. No, I mean… wow…”
The client slapped her forehead, her body trembling with frustration.
Maybe she was still tense from earlier?
Hmm, I guess warm drinks help in situations like this!
“Ahem, should I call you ‘client’? Or is there a name you prefer?”
“You can call me… Aileen.”
“Okay, Miss Aileen… Would you like some coffee?”
“Coffee? In a blacksmith’s shop?”
“Would you like it sweet, or bitter?”
“Shin Noah, what the hell are you…”
Oh, she doesn’t like coffee.
“I-I’ve got milk, too!”
I had bought it for myself, but I’d gladly share!
“I can’t believe I’m being escorted by someone like this…”
Aileen groaned and buried her face in her hands.
I don’t have any juice though…
“Would you like me to get some juice…?”
“… Just give me coffee. Black. So bitter it could kill me.”
“Too bitter isn’t good for your health, though…”
BANG!
Aileen slammed the table, nearly breaking it, and stood up abruptly.
“Yikes—!”
What the heck! I was just trying to be considerate!
“Just… please… bring me anything… got it?”
Her facial muscles tightened in frustration. She looked like a demon.
“Y-yes… I’ll bring you the bitterest coffee…”
Normally, two spoonfuls is already very bitter… but I put in four this time.
And she drank it just fine.
