Chapter 72: Befriending My Enemies
Chapter 72: Befriending My Enemies
"Lord Damien!" She almost screamed in fear that she would lose sight of him before she could talk to him, but she forgot he was a vampire and could easily hear her even though she had called him in a whisper.
In the process of screaming his name hysterically like a maniac, she garnered the maid’s attention as they shot her a cautious glare for calling out a vampire lord in such a manner.
"Don’t you have any manners? How dare you scream a lord’s name?" The maids snapped at her.
They scoffed disbelievingly as she rolled her eyes visibly at them before walking past them, knowing Damien wouldn’t take any offense to it and she was right because he veered around with a charming smile plastered on his face as his eyes met hers.
"It’s alright, go back to your work " Damien said nonchalantly to the maids and she saw them lower their heads flustered.
Stunning as always, he was, but her intrusive thought rather compared with Draco.
"Miss Rama, to what do I owe this pleasure?" He said as he started ascending the stairs with elegant poise, as he approached her.
Her gaze flickered past the maids before she averted them to him.
"I’m sorry for disturbing you lord Damien, but can we talk somewhere more...outside." She said in a whisper, low enough for the maids not to catch a single word of, but Damien was sure to catch every word rolling off her lips.
"Of course." He said with a polite smile as he veered around and descended down the spiral stairs while she followed behind with scurrying footsteps.
She was clambering down the stairs when she missed her footing and she tripped with a yelp, but with the aid of his inhumanely fast reflexes, he caught her with a swift movement as one strong arm wrapped around her waist, preventing her from toppling down the stairs.
"Are you alright?" He whispered in her ear in genuine concern but somehow, it weaved into her ears in a seductive tone.
"I’m fine, thank you." She said in a rushed tone, feeling uncomfortable at their close proximity, as her body was pressed against his, but he suddenly pulled his hand away from her waist, standing a few inches back after making sure her balance was regained.
’Such a gentleman’ she thought inwardly in pure sarcasm.
"Watch your steps so you don’t fall down the stairs, humans are fragile creatures, so you could easily die from falling down the stairs." He pointed out in a logical sense before proceeding down the stairs.
"Yes, I will." She muttered as she descended the stairs behind him while watching her footsteps carefully to avoid another tripping episode.
They finally arrived at the end of the stairs and proceeded outside the castle. The sun greeted her sight, basking her in its warmth and light which made her feel a sense of serenity amidst the darkness exuding from within and outside the castle.
She couldn’t help but admire his beautiful red hair under the sunlight, it gleamed beautifully as his ponytail swayed behind him, scattering with the wind in a serene manner. She wondered which of his parents had red hair as lord Zamiel had reddish brown hair.
He led her to the garden which was surprisingly beautiful with exotic flowers planted to exhibit their striking beauty in the exterior of the castle.
As much as she explored the forest and wildlife, she had never encountered such exotic flowers, except the red roses which she could familiarize herself with, seated among the many exotic ones.
"So, miss Rama we’re outside." Damien said in a neutral tone, as he waited for her to speak, anticipation lingered in his tone to hear what she had eagerly wanted to tell him.
She cleared her throat nervously, as she anticipated his response to her request, even though he seemed carefree, she still found it hard to discern him or the reply he would give.
He could give her a blatant no which wouldn’t be surprising or hopefully a yes, but the chances seemed very slim as he would be going against Draco and going against Draco led to very dangerous outcomes, she experienced it firsthand by losing everything she held dear to her.
"I don’t like my time been wasted, Rama. You’re blatantly straightforward, so I’m guessing whatever’s making you this nervous is presumably related to Draco." He implied thoughtfully as his crimson eyes were fixated on her unwaveringly.
"You’re undoubtedly right, can I ask for a favour then? I’ll do anything other than being your mistress." She stated firmly.
His red eyes squinted as he shot her a skeptical look. He rubbed his smooth chin thoughtfully, taking his time before replying.
"That’s good enough. I’ve been bored living alone for a long time, I wouldn’t mind the company, particularly your company." Damien said nonchalantly with a charming grin playing on the edges of his lips.
Rama’s brows furrowed at his words, the meaning was evidently clear and obvious, there was no underlying meaning behind it as he stated that he wanted her to live with him.
"What do you mean? You already live in the castle." She pointed out.
"I don’t, I stay here for a while because I’m bored alone. Zamiel stays here to keep an eye on Draco..." He trailed off and she nodded thoughtfully, but still she felt opposing to his demand.
"I don’t think Draco will let that happen.."
"That’s not for you to worry about, my proposal still stands, do you want my help or not?" He stated with an unwavering zeal, standing firmly on his words.
At that point, she had no choice but to accept his proposition since it was obvious he wouldn’t go back on his words and maybe, living with him wouldn’t suck as much as living with Draco, but still she was wary of him.
Beneath that thick mask he wore was a demon she had not encountered yet, which made her even more wary and skeptical.
"But why would you want me to live with you? You could have anyone. Don’t you have mistresses?" She queried with a slightly hesitant voice and the charming grin on his face abruptly dropped to be replaced with a tepid countenance.
"I prefer my privacy, but I wouldn’t mind you living with me." He said dryly.
"Do you accept my proposition or not?" He shot his question before she could stem another word.
She swallowed softly at his straightforwardness, she still couldn’t understand why he would want her to live with him despite Draco possessing her as his captive and would undoubtedly never let her go.
"Yes, I accept but on one condition. I can’t leave my friend here, she won’t survive without me." She hurriedly added in.
"Fine." He replied nonchalantly despite gatekeeping his privacy so tightly, he was willing to alter it for her to live with him.
"But how would you convince Draco to let me go?" She queried in curiosity. He seemed too confident about changing Draco’s mind which made her even more curious.
"Again, that’s for me to worry about. So what do you need?" He questioned, heading straight to the point without another diversion.
"I need to see the seers." She blurted out and his brows lifted up skeptically.
"The seers, why do you need to see them?" He queried and she pondered on whether to tell him or not, but since he was doing her a favour, she could as well tell him the reason why.
"I need some clarification for a strange prophecy they gave me." She explained. He nodded but didn’t ask anymore questions and ordered a carriage to be prepared for the journey instead.
He squirmed in unease as he stood under the sun waiting for the carriage. He covered his face from the sunlight with his hands even if it was mild. It seemed as if vampires were vulnerable if they stayed in the sun for some time.
"I haven’t taken the tonic today, it helps us stay longer in the sun." He explained when he caught her staring and she nodded without saying a word.
A carriage approached them and halted in front of them. The coachman opened the door for Damien to enter and he hurriedly got in, as he avoided the wrath of the sun on him, but he ignored Rama, obviously because she was of lower class.
She felt a tang of hurt at his behaviour but then, Damien outstretched his hand toward her to help her into the carriage.
She placed her hand on his with a tiny smile, usually she would have refused, but she had to befriend her enemies, if it meant surviving in the cruel world of vampires and attaining her vengeance.
Even though lord Damien seemed to treat her like a human being and not an animal, it didn’t reduce her hatred for vampires and it didn’t make her see him any more differently. He was still her enemy, but she would befriend him. She would keep her enemies close.
