The Creatures That We Are
Chapter 1270: Relax A Little

Chapter 1270: Relax A Little

“The Realm of Detachment foretold the fate of everything in this world. Nothing was tethered. All were houses of cards built in the sky, doomed to fall, disintegrate, and return to nothingness. To avoid the fate, one had to keep going up, but that would only delay the inevitable rather than avoid it.”

“Nicely said,” Zhang Wei praised, giving him a thumbs-up.

He waited for a few seconds before blinking in confusion. “Keep going, Mr. G.”

“That’s it.”

“Huh?” Zhang Wei couldn’t be more disappointed. “So you are just saying whatever came to you?”

“What else?” Gregor took a deep inhale.

“Seriously?” Zhang Wei went for a taunt. “Where’s the man who was giving a whole lecture to us?”

“Inspiration isn’t easy to come by,” Gregor said self-deprecatingly. “Most of the time, it’s more like trying to squeeze toothpaste out of an almost empty tube.”

“Ughhh! I’m losing my mind here!”

“Still, this room is better than the last one. At least it’s got everything.” Gregor grabbed a cigar floating before him. “This is nice. I’ll try it.”

Before Gregor popped the cigar right into his mouth, Hong Xiaoxiao cried out, “Wait!”

She went up to put a hairpin in Gregor’s hair. Although Gao Yang’s double had checked that none of the items or food here was dangerous, she was still worried.

“Thank you, Little Hong.” Gregor was moved.

“No worries,” Hong Xiaoxiao said with a smile. “I’m also waiting for your inspiration to strike.”

“Ahhh! It’s so boring!” Wang Zikai was at his limit. “Someone fight me!”

None of us here has a death wish, Liao Liao grumbled silently. She said with a smile, “Brother Kai, if you’re bored, I’ll look for a gaming console for you.”

“That works!” Zhang Wei interrupted. “Brother Kai, let’s run to the very top once we get the console. We’ll play games while waiting for the others.”

Wang Zikai glared at him icily. “Zhang Wei, do I look like an idiot to you?”

“Of course not!” Zhang Wei panickedly explained. “It’s just that you look bored, and I want to make things more interesting for you...”

“Yeah, it’ll be pretty interesting for me to throw you down now,” Wang Zikai said.

“Haha, you’re funny, Brother Kai...” Zhang Wei hurried up to Gao Yang and lowered his voice. “Do something, Brother Kai. Your best friend is going insane.”

Gao Yang considered for a moment. “Wang Zikai, look around for a gaming console.”

Wang Zikai paused. “I don’t feel like playing games now.”

“But I do,” Gao Yang said.

“Well, it’s not a bad idea to play games and relax. We’re here. No need to rush.” Wang Zikai looked around with his hands on his hips. “Let’s see where I should search.”

“Will you bring me, Brother Kai?” Zhang Wei was eager for any action.

“Fine,” Wang Zikai scoffed. “Hop on already.”

“You got it!” Zhang Wei jumped onto Wang Zikai’s back, pointing at the large structure floating diagonally above them. “Let’s start there. That building looks more modern.”

“Hold on tight.”

Wang Zikai jumped to the building a few hundred meters away.

“Gao Yang.” Gregor struggled to recover his jaw. “Be honest. Did you charm Wang Zikai or something? Why does he always listen to you?”

“I don’t know,” Gao Yang admitted. “He’s always trusted me unconditionally, more so than he trusts himself.”

“That is an easier life,” White Dew said wistfully, her eyes dimming for a second. “Fresh Snow was like that, too. She always listened to me and lived every day without care. But she grew up.”

Silence descended.

Gao Yang quietly led the group, and soon, they reached a tilted modern bridge and crossed it. Its midsection connected to a screening room without a wall or a ceiling. It worked as a pretty good observation deck since it was perpendicular to the “water level” below.

The disintegrating force wouldn’t catch up to them just yet. They decided to take a short break and wait for Wang Zikai and Zhang Wei to return. They each took a seat, as if waiting for a movie screening.

The only show they got was the motion of the untethered objects floating in the air, awaiting their destruction into nothingness.

Some time later, Wang Zikai and Zhang Wei returned. They had found a console and a projector.

“Haha, we got it!” Wang Zikai brought the console and the projector to Gao Yang. “I wonder if they still work.”

“It should,” Dr. Jia said. He had tested it. Everything in this space seemed functional.

“Okay!” Wang Zikai jumped to the floor below the screen and busied about with Zhang Wei in tow. They found a power outlet. And they connected the projector.

Wang Zikai jogged back to Gao Yang in the audience seat with wireless controllers, beaming like a kid sharing his toy with his friend. “Here. Let’s play together. It’s our first time gaming with such a large screen. It’ll be awesome!”

“Yeah.”

Gao Yang took one of the controllers. They sat down side-by-side.

Wang Zikai inserted the disk of a fighting game, but what they were presented with wasn’t a selection of different characters.

There were only two simple icons on the screen: a blue pill and a red pill.
