The Country Maiden: Fields and Leisure -
Chapter 360 - 361: Splashing It On
Chapter 360: Chapter 361: Splashing It On
Well, she was relieved now. After drinking the Gene Modification Liquid, her constitution had basically been adjusted. Not to mention anything else, her aim and control of strength were now impeccable.
However, next time she couldn’t go for the head anymore; a few more bangs like that, even if Wang Yonggui became a bit smarter, she would still turn herself into a pigheaded fool.
Amitabha! If Wang Yonggui came up with more mischief next time, she would just go for a binding PLAY straightaway. After all, that jujube tree in the courtyard was ready-made, Wang Yongzhu contemplated.
Coming back to her senses and seeing the shocked expression in Guan Yifei’s eyes, Wang Yongzhu still felt the need to explain her actions, "You don’t have to be scared, Big Brother Guan. This is just me playing with my Third Brother. We always play like this at home..."
As if anyone normally plays like this! Who plays with their siblings in such a way?
Guan Yifei felt a chill down his spine, sensing that the young girl before him had an aura of, "If you don’t believe me, why don’t we give it a try? Then you’ll believe."
What to do? Guan Yifei managed to squeeze out a smile with difficulty, "I can see that the sibling bond between you two is indeed very deep..."
Whether others believed it or not, he certainly did.
Although Wang Yongzhu felt that Guan Yifei might say he believed her but might not actually believe her explanation at heart.
But that wasn’t an important matter. She explained, and Guan Yifei accepted it, and that was that.
It wouldn’t affect their cooperation; in fact, it might even add a bit of deterrence for Guan Yifei.
So she remained calm, acting as if Guan Yifei truly believed her, and with a cheery farewell, she walked away with the package in one hand and the unconscious Wang Yongfu in the other, under Guan Yifei’s incredulous gaze.
After leaving the street and turning a corner, Wang Yongzhu dropped Wang Yongfu on the ground and rubbed her wrists.
Jinhoo, perceptive as ever, offered, "Miss, are you tired? Why don’t you go back first? I can look after Third Uncle here. When he wakes up, I’ll go back with him."
Deep down, Jinhoo had little respect for this Third Uncle, who was always sneaky and ingratiating.
The family once supported the Second Uncle, who, at least, had the title of Scholar and could lend some help to the family.
But what about Third Uncle? Other than his sweet-talking, which could make people happy, he was of no help to the family and often dragged them down instead.
Jinhoo had a hunch about today’s incident; probably this Third Uncle had smelled sweetness like a bee and was trying to take advantage of the Old Wang Family’s name, leveraging the connections Zhuzhu had finally made, to scrounge some money for himself.
Wang Yongzhu scoffed and ordered Jinhoo, "Go to the neighbor’s and ask for a bucket of cold water."
Jinhoo dared not ask more questions; she knocked on the door of a nearby house, handed over a Large Coin, and soon came out with a bucket of cold water.
"Pour it on him!" Wang Yongzhu turned her head and commanded Jinhoo.
Like a reflex, Jinhoo doused Wang Yongfu from head to toe with the bucketful.
Wang Yonggui moaned as he woke up, taking a good while to come to his senses, only to see Jinhoo holding the empty bucket and himself all wet.
His eyebrows shot up in anger, "Jinhoo, you’re itching for a spanking, aren’t you?"
As he got up, he looked sorrowfully at his clothes - they were the set he had gotten in the county town at Sun Ahfu’s expense, specially worn for the day’s occasion.
Now they were caked in mud and sticking wetly to his skin.
"I’m the one who told Jinhoo to splash the water. Third Brother, you were in such a hurry to come here, with the weather being so hot, you got heatstroke, didn’t you? You just fainted earlier. I had Jinhoo sprinkle water on you to cool you down. Look, aren’t you awake now?"
Wang Yonggui had been knocked unconscious, not stupefied.
His back of the head was still aching, and when he felt it, there was a bump.
Seeing his little sister blatantly lying while looking him in the eye, Wang Yonggui seethed with anger and wanted to lash out, but when Wang Yongzhu glared at him, and he remembered how she had carried him off like a small chick the other day, he immediately chickened out.
Gritting his teeth and not daring to glare at Wang Yongzhu, he shot a look at the gloating Jinhoo beside her, "Then Third Brother should thank you, huh!"
"Don’t mention it, we’re siblings after all. Alright, Third Brother, you’re awake now, let’s hurry back home," Wang Yongzhu said, unceremoniously accepting the thanks.
Wang Yonggui knew better than to mess with Wang Yongzhu, so he twisted the mud out of his clothes and followed behind.
Fortunately, the weather was so hot that the clothes dried quickly once worn.
On the way back home, Wang Yonggui looked at the heavy parcel that Wang Yongzhu was carrying on her back and quickly adjusted his mindset.
He sidled up to Wang Yongzhu, "Sister, we’ve walked such a long way; you must be tired. Let Third Brother carry the parcel! Third Brother is strong," he said, reaching out to take it.
Wang Yongzhu dodged to one side but Wang Yonggui still managed to graze the hard silver ingot with his fingertips, his eyes immediately lighting up.
He followed Wang Yongzhu all the way, and regardless of her ignoring him, he kept up a robust chatter by himself.
Every so often, he’d crack a witty remark, making even Jinhoo struggle to hold back her laughter.
Listening to Wang Yonggui, Wang Yongzhu learned about his experiences over the years, and the journey increased her understanding of the outside world significantly.
Although Wang Yonggui received no response from Wang Yongzhu, he could tell she was listening intently, so he racked his brains for more intriguing stories to share.
He was always eloquent, and even though he was known to be lazy and a failure both as a husband and a father,
when he spoke of the outside world, his spirited demeanor was a stark contrast to his usual slick appearance.
Wang Yongzhu was moved, her expression softened, and occasionally she was even amused enough by his jokes to laugh out loud.
With Wang Yonggui’s conversation to alleviate the monotony, they arrived home quickly.
Upon entering the courtyard, Old Granny Zhang first looked toward Wang Yongzhu, "Zhuzhu, did you sell everything?"
Wang Yongzhu nodded.
The anxious members of the Wang Family all heaved sighs of relief—especially Wang Yongfu, whose eyes reddened with a mix of gratitude and pride.
"How much did you sell for—" Just as Old Granny Zhang began to ask about the silver, she saw Sun Ahfu poking her head out from the small room.
Her face darkened, and she pulled her daughter towards the main house.
The others hurried after them, all curious about the earnings. Jinhua stayed at the doorway with Jinshao, straining her ears to listen to the conversation inside while keeping a watchful eye on Sun Ahfu to keep her away.
Sun Ahfu, inwardly cursing, spat out and went back inside to lie down.
Inside the house, Old Granny Zhang couldn’t wait and grabbed Wang Yongzhu, "Daughter, our mountain goods, how much silver did we get for them?"
Wang Yongzhu didn’t keep it a secret; it was everyone’s business, after all.
She had made a list detailing which mountain goods, how many jin of each, the price per jin, and the total amount in silver.
Each item was clearly recorded.
Not caring about how dirty he was, Wang Yonggui squeezed next to Wang Laozhu, craning his neck to read the list. When he saw the two hundred taels of patterned silver written clearly at the bottom, his vision blurred.
Two hundred taels? He had thought the family’s business was just a minor affair; how much could it possibly earn?
But to think, it could actually bring in so much?
