Chapter 97: Chapter 95: After the Calamity

Zhao Changsheng lashed out with her Thunder Whip, grabbing the claw that was attacking Su Mo and pulled back forcefully, stopping it from moving any further.

Superpower gathered in Lu Chen’s hands, and Cold Ice spread under the zombie’s feet, as several ice spikes burst from the ground and pierced through the lower half of the zombie’s body.

As it howled from its mouth, its powerful arms gripped Su Mo’s thigh tightly and was about to bite down, but at the moment it opened its mouth, her hand twisted its lower jaw upwards. Lu Chen immediately threw his Ice Blade, piercing through the zombie’s mouth.

Li Qian saw this and spread his spiritual power fully toward the zombie.

It only caused a half-second distraction, but Su Mo didn’t want to waste the opportunity and immediately grabbed its head, turning it towards Lu Chen, "Quick!"

Ice Blade converged in his hand, carrying a piercing intent to kill, and shot accurately into the zombie’s head.

The massive body crashed to the ground, and Su Mo fell from its shoulder as well. The man immediately helped her up, scanning her from head to toe with a frown, "Are you hurt?"

Su Mo shook her head, her large eyes curving into crescents, "I had it under control."

Li Chuan stood to the side, reassessing Su Mo’s combat strength, his interest growing stronger.

Three mercenaries who had survived were behind him, reminding him.

The deafening sound of the roof collapsing followed, large volumes of black smoke carrying a pungent smell rose up, and countless cockroaches, having toppled the house, began to spread around the factory.

Jianxiong had already dashed to the military vehicle to start it up.

Seeing this, Su Mo hastily dug the Crystal Stone from the zombie’s head and tossed it into the System Bag. Picking up the Tang Blade, she grabbed Lu Chen and ran.

"We should leave too."

Sheng Yuan, with Jingjing, had only five survivors left. The two modified cars outside had been hijacked by Li Chuan, who took one and left, so they had to squeeze into the remaining vehicle.

Su Mo and Lu Chen got into the truck’s storage compartment; the newly modified space was a bit more spacious than expected.

Li Qian put Su Niang in the backseat before settling there too, while Zhao Changsheng swung her Thunder Whip to fend off the cockroaches that kept closing in and quickly climbed into the co-driver’s seat.

"Let’s go!"

Jianxiong floored the accelerator, speeding past some of the faster cockroaches out of the repair shop, trailing behind the two modified cars.

The car’s headlights lit up, illuminating the pitch-black road ahead.

Su Mo turned half her body and glanced once more through the small window of the storage compartment at the repair shop, the entire roof had collapsed, and the teeming cockroaches scattered around, growing further and further away from them.

Her hand was tightly held by Lu Chen and placed on his knee; she turned her head back up to look at him, feeling a touch of warmth in her heart.

"What was with that zombie just now?" Li Qian asked, still catching his breath.

"It mutated after eating a superpower user," Su Mo replied, frowning.

Zombies eating superpower users seem to be like them consuming Crystal Cores, capable of evolution.

"Fuck, nearly lost our lives changing that car," Jianxiong cursed while driving.

His heart was still beating violently. Su Niang, sitting behind and deeply empathizing, patted the back of his seat, "Exactly, getting old really drags you guys down."

As she spoke, she lowered her head, evidently upset.

Zhao Changsheng’s fox-like eyes narrowed, and unusually for her, she patted Su Niang’s shoulder as if to comfort her, "It’s not your fault for being old."

Li Qian’s eyes behind his glasses shone with a hint of amusement.

Su Mo leaned against the trunk, catching her breath with a chuckle, "Is this supposed to be comforting?"

She leaned forward, sticking her upper body out towards Su Niang and said, "Don’t listen to her nonsense, Su Niang. Everyone on our team makes their own contributions. Just knowing that you’re not a drag is enough."

If it weren’t for her cooking skills, how could she have learned to make those dishes that actually tasted quite good?

Su Niang’s eyes reddened, and she nodded, "You all are good kids."

Su Mo sat back down, her hand still held in Lu Chen’s. His palm was cool, and she rested her head on his shoulder, her hand placed on top of his.

"Lu Chen, I want to sleep for a bit," she whispered in his ear.

"Sleep," he said.

Jianxiong kept following the lead vehicle without overtaking or changing lanes. After the first two vehicles up front knocked a few Level 2 zombies aside and slowed down, Sheng Yuan’s car pulled off to one side of the road, braked to let Jianxiong’s go by, and then followed suit.

Soon, Li Chuan’s vehicle also reduced speed and followed behind them.

"Are these people planning to have us lead the way?" Su Mo asked, yawning.

"Probably. I’ll keep an eye out," Li Qian said, always watching the road. His spiritual power was constantly being released, and from time to time he would take a sip of the little tea left in the bag before adding, "Su Mo, you should boil some tea."

Su Mo hummed with her eyes closed. Their resources had been depleted greatly recently; they had finished the tea, and indeed, it was time to boil some more.

She hadn’t slept well in days, clinging to Lu Chen as they nestled together for rest.

The night travel was uneventful, and Jianxiong continued driving until noon the next day, when Li Qian and he could no longer hold out; they stopped to switch drivers.

They went to relieve themselves in a pile of roadside grass, and the two vehicles that had been following leisurely also pulled over and their occupants headed to the grass.

Su Mo and Lu Chen woke up and got out of the car to wash their faces. Leaning against the car, Su Mo breathed deeply and said to herself, "Since the apocalypse began, the air has improved a lot."

"We’re almost out of fuel," Jianxiong said with distress after coming back from the grass.

Su Mo took out the last can of fuel from the System Bag and handed it to him, "Use this first."

As instructed, he took it and started refilling the car, while Su Mo frowned in thought.

Li Chuan, just back from the grass, caught her gaze, flashing her a charming smile, his almond eyes as seductive and provocative as Zhao Changsheng’s.

Su Mo shifted her eyes and rubbed her arms, took back the empty can, and settled into the passenger seat.

She held a map they had taken from a gas station; Li Qian had already marked the route on it. All they had to do was follow it.

"We only have this can of fuel left. We’ll have to find a gas station," Su Mo said, glancing at the fuel gauge and frowning.

After their car had been modified, the fuel consumption had increased. This was indeed a problem.

Lu Chen took the driver’s seat, and he took out several bottles of milk and some bread from Space, distributing them to the back seat.

Seeing Su Mo focused on the map, he prepared the straw for the milk and handed it to her.

"Thanks," she said with a smile, taking a sip and then spreading the map in front of him, pointing to a place, "There are a few gas stations ahead of us. We just don’t know if they have any fuel left."

"If there’s none, we’ll have to get off the highway before we run out of fuel and go down to take a look," she moved her finger from the marked black line to a small county town below.

"County town?" Jianxiong leaned against the trunk, biting into his bread and sighing, "Is there really no other choice?"

Sitting beside, Li Qian shook his head, "No."

They had experienced the dangers of the city more than once, but with no fuel left on the road, they would have to take the risk and head down there.
