Chapter 95: Chapter 93: The Cockroach Army
Startled, Su Mo soon realized that more people equated to more combat strength, and perhaps they could buy some time if danger arose.
It was cruel, but that was the survival rule now.
Tonight, Jingjing had specifically changed into a strapless mini dress. As Su Mo sat eating dry rations from her backpack with Lu Chen and the others, she saw Jingjing sway her hips, pull their curtain aside, and walk in gracefully.
"Brother Lu, I’m here to thank you for the rice on behalf of Brother Sheng," she said, sitting down next to him and leaning slightly forward, inadvertently revealing more than intended.
"Boss, you’re quite the lucky man," Jianxiong teased, winking at him as he bit into a biscuit.
After he spoke, Zhao Changsheng, feeling irked, stretched out his leg and kicked Jianxiong’s thigh: "You call this being lucky? Are you blind? Is she even as pretty as our Momo?"
He mentioned Su Mo and immediately threw her a flirty glance: "Momo, these stinky men attracting bees and butterflies, aren’t I the better one?"
Su Mo rolled her eyes at her.
Embarrassed by the back and forth teasing among the group, Jingjing’s eyes reddened, and then Su Niang, who also greatly disliked this woman, patted the mat with her palm and spoke up sternly yet kindly, "What kind of a lady dresses like that? Haven’t you heard of decency and shame?"
Unable to hold back her tears, Jingjing leaned towards the man: "Brother Lu, I was just..."
Before she could get close, Lu Chen stood up abruptly and kicked her in the stomach, sending her flying out of the curtain.
"Ouch!" She collapsed to the ground, her lower abdomen throbbing with pain.
Su Mo, imitating Jianxiong, gave a thumbs-up to the man for his simple and rough approach, which she appreciated.
Her generous cleavage attracted frequent, furtive glances, while Li Chuan responded with a mocking smile.
"Jingjing, stop trying so hard to please everyone inside. After all, we’re all cut from the same cloth, why would anyone look up to you?" a disheveled woman said provocatively, leaning on the shoulder of a superpower user.
Jingjing got up from the ground, shot a hateful glare at the woman, and walked away while clutching her stomach.
"Forget about her, come give me a kiss," the superpower user demanded, planting a kiss on the woman’s face and then beginning to get handsy in front of everyone.
"Let’s get one thing straight, half of tomorrow’s porridge is mine," she said.
"You can have it all," the man said irritably, rolling over on top of her.
The night deepened, and Sheng Yuan had two superpower users on guard duty at the car factory, alert to any activity inside.
Su Mo still slept in the corner, with Lu Chen sitting beside her. Tonight, it was his turn to take the first half of the night shift, while Jianxiong was already lying on the ground, snoring away.
"Go to sleep," he said, touching her head gently.
She lay on the ground for a while, but sleep eluded her, and that unsettling feeling in her heart surged again.
Every time there was a situation, she’d feel this way. Su Mo got up from the ground and sat next to him, whispering, "I’ll keep watch with you for a bit."
The man glanced at her, and seeing she really wasn’t sleepy, nodded his head. The room was eerily quiet, the only noticeable sounds came from beyond the curtains where some were still indulging in pleasure-seeking activities.
The transaction for a bowl of porridge was still going on without pause.
Su Mo leaned on his shoulder, ignoring the noises outside altogether. She listlessly flipped through the control panel, the faint blue light particularly striking in her dark eyes. Only she could see it, and the progress bar below had crept forward a bit more.
Apart from the discordant sound, Su Mo’s ears twitched, sensing a soft scuttling noise from beyond the curtains.
A black antenna suddenly appeared on her screen, startling her. She immediately closed the panel, and on Jianxiong’s thigh was a palm-sized cockroach whose antenna she had just seen on her screen.
"Lu Chen," she lifted her head from the man’s shoulder, pointing, "on Jianxiong’s leg."
Lu Chen had already seen it. The superpower surged in his hands, and an Ice Blade precisely crossed through the roach’s abdomen, nailing it to the straw mat.
Su Mo immediately stood up, nudged Jianxiong with her foot, and whispered urgently, "Get up, stop sleeping."
Jianxiong woke up in confusion, frightened by the cockroach corpse beside him, whose legs still frantically twitched despite its pierced belly.
She called everyone in the tent to wake up. Upon hearing the commotion, Li Qian sat up. The cockroaches on the nearby straw mat made him frown; despite extending his spiritual power, he detected no fluctuations.
"Let’s get moving now. I can’t sense these things at all with my spiritual power," he suggested.
Jianxiong was the first to agree. He quickly packed his backpack, slinging it over his shoulder, while Su Mo glanced at Lu Chen and chimed in, "Let’s go. The car is repaired anyway. If it comes to it, we’ll just sleep in the car afterward."
"Ah! Help!"
It was the cry of the woman who had been struggling with the superpower user.
Su Mo’s face tensed as she flung open the curtain. The two who were supposed to be keeping watch had already turned on the lights.
The glaring floodlights came on, and once the surroundings were clear, Su Mo felt goosebumps all over. The superpower user who was ’battling’ the woman was covered in cockroaches, climbing all over his hands and arms. He jumped up, desperately shaking off the creatures clinging to him.
On the ground, the walls, and the ceiling, countless cockroaches had appeared out of nowhere, completely silent.
"Damn, when did these things come out?" The horrific scene even startled Jianxiong.
"I can’t detect them at all," Li Qian frowned, his eyes behind the glasses flashing coldly. He lifted Su Niang onto his back without hesitation.
Zhao Changsheng readied her Thunder Whip, the sight giving her the creeps as well, "Let’s break out."
"Wait!" Jianxiong took off his backpack and tossed the bottles of Jasmine to Zhao Changsheng and Li Qian, keeping one for himself, "Might come in handy when necessary."
Su Mo felt her legs go weak, surrounded by a dense mass of cockroaches. At last, she understood the source of that writhing sound.
The factory was in chaos, with cockroaches continuously falling from the ceiling—landing on people’s heads and collars, inciting frantic screams. All the superpower users unleashed their powers in panic, trying to fend off the surrounding cockroaches.
The unfortunate ones bitten by the roaches lay on the floor wailing, and Su Mo’s face paled. She suddenly looked up, her eyes widening as a cockroach with sharp mouthparts and fluttering wings grew larger in her vision. Its crimson eyes, locked onto her.
Without thinking, she drew her Tang Blade and activated her superpower to disappear from the spot. The cockroach fell to the ground where she cleaved its body with her blade.
Raising her voice, she shouted to everyone that the roaches on the ceiling could fly, having noticed them crawling there unnoticed.
Right after her warning, countless roaches stuck to the walls started to flap their wings. The vast number created a rustling that sounded like a death knell in everyone’s ears.
Lu Chen looked up at the ceiling, and in the area right above them, Cold Ice rapidly emerged, freezing the cockroaches in place momentarily.
