Chapter 94: Chapter 92: Before Departure
A transparent little tube fell next to the toolbox, and Lu Chen squinted his eyes, quickly picking it up while they weren’t paying attention.
"What are you doing with that?" Su Mo asked curiously.
"It’ll be useful later."
Two people who had been bitten were tied up in the open space outside of the repair shop.
The man had already developed a high fever, and the woman was showing signs of mutation—her fingernails lengthening, and purplish-brown lines spreading from the wound on her ankle.
The guard, holding a long screwdriver sharpened at the end, raised it and plunged it into the eye socket of the woman whose pupils were starting to turn white.
Su Mo frowned as she watched the entire process and suddenly asked, "What would happen if a superpower user is bitten and doesn’t make it?"
"A zombie with superpowers," Lu Chen replied matter-of-factly.
The speed-type zombie from that day was a prime example.
Su Mo fell silent.
After receiving the bag of rice at Sheng Yuan, Jingjing immediately stood up, annoyance flickering across her beautiful face: "I’ll try to seduce that man again tonight."
He pulled her into his arms and breathed gently on her neck: "No need."
"Why?" Jingjing asked as she anxiously circled his neck.
"You’re not yet qualified to compete with that girl," he said ruthlessly.
If that powerful man became one of her subordinates, she would be as good as having a lifesaver. Moreover, the woman had publicly humiliated her yesterday, which she could not accept.
"Understood," Jingjing said softly, leaning into his arms, her eyes burning with fury.
With the allure of the rice, their work efficiency was astonishing. Su Mo couldn’t help but remark, "At this rate, we could actually finish by midnight."
Lu Chen tousled her hair gently.
Li Chuan walked out of the workshop and headed directly toward them.
"Can we talk?" he said to Lu Chen.
Sensing their subtle atmosphere, Su Mo took two steps back on her own: "I’ll come over after you’re done talking."
"No need," he said as he pulled her back.
"Let’s talk here," Lu Chen said coldly, his eyes on Li Chuan, his face unreadable.
"The Lu Family and Jiang Residence collaborated to build that fortress in City B, you know that, right?" The two looked each other in the eye, Li Chuan not wanting to miss any flicker of emotion on his face.
"And then?"
His pathologically pale face broke into a smile, and a dark light surged in his almond eyes: "It’s said that the base was actually finished half a month ago, and Elder Jiang, wanting to protect his only son, has stepped back and handed over much of his military power to my so-called father."
Lu Chen frowned, his voice cold: "Impossible."
Lu Youwei knew exactly what kind of person Jiang Hai was; he would never easily hand over military power.
Li Chuan leaned closer, his voice low and magnetic, "They all think that the War God Admiral from Jiang Residence is dead."
Standing by Lu Chen’s side, Su Mo could distinctly feel the man’s aura growing colder and more tyrannical; she grabbed his hand, worry in her eyes.
Several mercenaries who followed Li Chuan walked out of the repair shop, their eyes fixed on the trio from a distance.
Li Chuan stepped back, his exotic almond eyes glancing at Su Mo as he softly said, "We have a common enemy; you shouldn’t have a weak spot."
Weak spot... Su Mo frowned and spoke out, "If it weren’t for me, your weak spot, you’d already be dead."
Li Chuan gave her a look and hooked up a charming smile.
"If that’s all you have to say, you can leave," the man said, his face tense and eyes already flashing with murderous intent, but Li Chuan didn’t care; he laughed, his face becoming even more grotesquely pale.
Before he left, he reminded them, "It’s said that Elder Jiang’s only son is about to be born."
The man disappeared with the mercenaries from their sight.
Su Mo, albeit somewhat confused by their conversation, understood that this might be a war between families, and there were secrets about Lu Chen she still didn’t know.
"Lu Chen... I won’t be a weakness," Su Mo’s lips moved as she asserted firmly.
The man suddenly embraced her, his chin resting on the top of her head with a force that seemed to embed her into his marrow, yet she held back her voice.
"Su Mo"
He called her name softly, and she responded from within his embrace.
"This trip to City B is extremely dangerous, the base might not be safe," his words carried a hint of ruthlessness.
"Are you ready?" he lowered his head, his voice hopeful as he whispered close to her ear.
The girl responded with a tight hug and Su Mo said with a smile, "I thought we made it very clear that night at the gas station."
Her hands touched the man’s stunningly cold, hard face as she declared, "No matter what happened to you before, no matter how dangerous our trip to City B will be, I, Su Mo, will definitely stay by your side, Lu Chen."
In her large eyes, it was all him, clearly reflected.
"So, can you tell me your secret now?"
"Once we’re in City B, you will understand everything," the man let her go, ruffling her hair as he did.
"Mmm," Su Mo didn’t ask any further.
The modification of the military vehicles was going full swing; today they had passed by many other vehicles, all bound for City B.
The man with a high fever from the bite had shown no signs of mutation yet, and the people outside had no choice but to keep watch over him.
By nightfall, the nose of the military vehicles had been fitted with iron plates, with sharp iron horns welded on. Iron nets that could be extended were installed over the windows and roof, and the back of the vehicle was modified into a space with two seats.
The whole vehicle looked brand new, appearing to have high combat and defense values.
Su Mo and others were extremely satisfied with the procurement they had managed earlier; they only needed to stay one more day before they could set off again tomorrow.
Tonight, Sheng Yuan specially ordered someone to inspect the repair shop inside and out but found nothing suspicious.
He sat in his private office, summoning all of Lu Chen’s people together; the radio on the desk continuously looped news related to the base in City B.
The office was small, and the fifteen or so people crammed inside filled it completely.
"I’ve called everyone here tonight to discuss an issue."
Acting as the intermediary for Su Mo and the others, Li Qian elegantly asked, "What’s the matter?"
Sheng Yuan stood up, looking at them sincerely, "I hope that when you go to City B, you can take our brothers along."
Su Mo raised her eyebrow, no wonder he was willing to spend a fortune on fixing their vehicle.
Li Qian, unable to decide by himself, turned his gaze to Lu Chen.
Su Mo thought he would refuse, but unexpectedly, the man agreed for the first time, "You can follow."
With those words from him, it was enough. Sheng Yuan breathed a sigh of relief with a smile, "Then, thank you in advance."
He pulled out a set of car keys from the desk, given during the car repairs; Jianxiong took them back.
When they emerged, people were busy distributing porridge at the repair factory, bustling about.
Passing through the crowd, Su Mo whispered to Lu Chen, "Why let them follow?"
Lu Chen simply rubbed her head and said nothing.
"When necessary, they will be the first to die," Li Qian, however, smiled and returned with a response.
