Chapter 93: Chapter 91: Sudden Mutation

The man had his eyes tightly closed, and it was unclear if he was asleep. She reached out to straighten his somewhat long silver hair in front of his forehead, then trailed her fingers down from his long eyelashes, over his nose bridge. As her fingers brushed his lips, they were suddenly caught in a firm grasp.

"Can’t sleep?" He opened his eyes, deep blue pupils gazing at her intently.

Her face flushed red, then she boldly nodded and said softly, "That cockroach kept me awake."

Every time she closed her eyes, all she could think about was the disgusting image of Zhao Changsheng stepping on a cockroach that afternoon, which made it very hard to feel sleepy while lying on the ground.

The man watched her for a while, then pulled most of her body into his arms and lifted her up slightly before leaning in for a kiss.

Su Mo became rigid, not daring to move. Behind Lu Chen was the steady breathing of Li Qian.

After a moment, he pulled back from her lips and pressed her head against his chest, his eyes showing pleasure: "Sleep."

"Boss, can’t sister sleep?" Jianxiong, who was on night watch, heard the man’s quiet voice and asked towards Lu Chen’s silhouette.

Su Mo pinched hard on his waist, and Lu Chen replied with a frown and in a cold voice, "She’s asleep."

She closed her eyes in frustration, not daring to make a sound.

The commotion actually helped chase away the thoughts of cockroaches in her mind, and as sleepiness came over her, she slowly drifted off to sleep.

Jianxiong was on watch until the second half of the night when the incident happened just as Zhao Changsheng was getting up to take over.

A non-human roar suddenly echoed inside the factory.

Su Mo almost immediately opened her eyes, got up from the ground, and Lu Chen stood up, ready to use his superpower at any moment.

Outside the curtain where they were, several figures ran past in panic. It was very dark inside the venue; everyone huddled together, listening to the noises.

Li Qian put on his glasses, and with spiritual power radiating from his mind, he frowned and said, "A Level 1 zombie has sneaked in."

"Level 1?" Su Mo was extremely surprised, "Weren’t all the doors closed properly? How did it get in?"

Li Qian shook his head, also somewhat puzzled; he had used his spiritual power to scan the entire factory inside and out in the afternoon, and there had been no anomalies.

After receiving the message, Sheng Yuan immediately ordered the lights in the repair factory to be turned on.

Lu Chen pulled back the curtain, and the factory was in complete chaos. With the lights on, everyone could finally see the situation inside.

It was an ordinary person who had mutated, pinned under Li Chuan’s foot, his skull crushed with one stomp, brain matter splattering out. With a look of disdain, Li Chuan withdrew his leg and wiped his shoes on the ground.

Sheng Yuan’s expression was grave; the mutated person belonged to their repair factory. Jingjing clung to him, her delicate body trembling with fear.

"Weren’t they all staying inside tonight?" she asked Sheng Yuan in a trembling voice.

Sheng Yuan didn’t speak, his thoughts in disarray. Indeed, he hadn’t assigned anyone to get involved in outside matters tonight. How had the person been bitten?

"Who else has been bitten? Come out," Li Chuan, with his almond-shaped eyes, said lazily, a cold light in his eyes.

The people around him instinctively stepped back a few paces, shaking their heads in unison.

He surveyed the crowd, then took a step towards Lu Chen.

"None of you have been bitten, have you?" His steps were graceful, the smile on his face charming as he came to a stop in front of Lu Chen.

Lu Chen cast a cold gaze towards him, a sound emerging from his throat: "Hmm."

Li Chuan raised his eyebrow, the teardrop mole under his eyes becoming more vivid with his smile: "That’s good."

As he left, he gave Su Mo a wink, but in the next second, Zhao Changsheng blocked her from his view, showing him the middle finger.

Li Chuan shrugged and sat back down on the ground.

Everyone gathered around the corpse, and Su Mo walked in to look at the body up close, crouching down.

Apart from a head stomped to a pulp, there wasn’t a single mark on the entire body.

"No bite wounds?" she said uncertainly.

The people around her gasped, and Lu Chen crouched down next to her as he made his way through the crowd. A common bite wound would evolve into a Level 1 Zombie, not with the astonishing mutation speed and reaction ability like a Level 2 Zombie.

Otherwise, this vehicle factory would be far more than just a single zombie.

"How could there be a sudden mutation without a bite wound?"

"But we haven’t gone out tonight, so how did he get injured?"

"..."

Everyone was talking at once, their expressions fearful.

"Alright, drag the body out and check everyone, one by one. I want to see if anyone else is injured," Sheng Yuan frowned, understanding that it was important to control the situation now. Once people become panicked before evacuating, things could get tricky.

Men and women were divided into two groups to check each other, and eventually, they caught two more people who had been bitten by that person, one male and one female, with the male being a superpower user.

Sheng Yuan ordered his subordinates to take them out of the factory, and to kill them on the spot in the open space outside if they mutated.

He returned to his office and sat upright all night long.

Su Mo and Lu Chen went behind their curtain.

Dawn was breaking.

"How’s the situation?" Jianxiong, very sleepy, asked as he exhaled a breath.

"Don’t know what caused it," Su Mo shook her head. She glanced at Zhao Changsheng, then looked down at her shoes, contemplating for a moment before saying, "Could it be... cockroaches?"

Li Qian was taken aback, then adjusted his glasses and nodded, "It’s possible."

"Didn’t I squash one? Maybe at night, it crawled up on that guy and bit a hole through him?" Zhao Changsheng lifted her foot, showing the dirty traces on the sole of her shoe.

As she said that, Su Mo really felt it might be the case.

"Lu Chen, what do you think?" she asked, looking up.

He rubbed her head and spoke in a cold voice, "We need to hurry with the car."

Su Mo agreed. If there really was a nest of cockroaches underneath and Li Qian couldn’t detect it, it was no laughing matter.

Jianxiong, now too afraid to simply sleep on the straw mat, was finally persuaded to take a short rest against the wall by Zhao Changsheng, who assured him three times she would keep watch.

Su Niang was also persuaded by Li Qian to get some sleep, while he stayed behind the curtain, his spiritual power always alert to any movements.

Su Mo and Lu Chen quickly tidied up, then went to find the people fixing their car.

"Cut the time to two days," she stood in the open space outside and signalled to the five mechanics working on the car using her fingers.

The mechanics shook their heads repeatedly, "With what’s happened in the factory, how could we possibly speed up the work for you?"

Su Mo took out a bag of rice from the System Bag and tossed it in front of them; this was from the stash she had hoarded in the supermarket. There was still plenty in Lu Chen’s Space, so she didn’t mind giving away this much.

"One bag of rice, make it last, it’s enough to eat for a very long time."

The mechanics’ eyes widened at the sight of the big bag of rice weighing tens of pounds.

"Second, what do you say..." one of them asked.

The one called Second touched his stomach and readily agreed, "Boss said to comply with all their requests. We can just sleep a little later at night and get up earlier to work."

Su Mo’s harmlessly cute face broke into a smile, "Then it’s a pleasure doing business."

The man hoisted the rice and left, seemingly to report to Sheng Yuan, while the remaining people got back to work without pause. Su Mo and Lu Chen stood not far away, continuing their supervision...
