Chapter 374: Chapter 373: Swamp Monster (Part 1)
The few who were sleeping on the ground all gathered their belongings and stood up.
"We should leave," Lu Chen packed up his things, his expression somewhat grim.
Seeing him like this, Su Mo said, "We’re all superpower users, it’s just rain, it shouldn’t be a problem, right?"
Her gorilla coat was also waterproof, and there shouldn’t be any problems with the child Jiang Zhuoyang.
"We’re surrounded by swamps, we must walk out after we go down," Lu Chen wrapped her clothes around her.
"Swamps?" It was their turn to be surprised.
Su Mo looked down at a patch of withered weeds, trying to step on them, the soil was loose. She hadn’t noticed before, but with his reminder, it indeed seemed possible.
"Let’s go," Lu Chen led the way, re-entering the jungle.
Not far into the dense forest, raindrops crashed down, hitting the leaves with a pattering sound.
Su Mo shrank her neck and turned back to instruct Jiang Yulian, "Make sure the child doesn’t get wet."
Jiang Yulian stuffed Jiang Zhuoyang completely inside her clothing, next to her belly, and wrapped him again with her fur coat.
Jianxiong blocked the rain from Ling Ye’s head, but he stretched out a hand to catch the black raindrops that fell through the leaf seams. Seeing no signs of mutation, Jianxiong felt relieved and no longer deliberately blocked the rain, quickening their pace.
As time ticked by, the rain grew heavier and the mud under their feet sank deeper. The surrounding trees began to thin, and with each lift of her leg, Su Mo found it increasingly difficult, the black soil becoming stickier. Several times, her shoes were nearly stuck.
The situation began to feel off, the surrounding view opened up, and the trees became sparse.
Lu Chen stopped and observed for a moment before heading toward a few bare trees not far away, "Let’s wait in the trees for the rain to stop, we can’t walk any further, this area will soon turn into a sea of swamps."
With no leaves to cover, the rain grew heavier, and Su Mo’s eyes were wetted by the black rainwater, making it hard for her to see, her feet also becoming heavier.
In the small area expanded by Li Qian’s spiritual power, a fluctuation appeared. He took off his glasses, now covered with droplets, and said, "Someone is coming!"
"There are still people in the mountains at this time?" Su Mo couldn’t help but speed up her pace.
Upon hearing this, Lu Chen gathered his superpower in his hands, spreading a layer of Cold Ice around him that headed straight for those trees. The ice formed within a range of about two hundred meters, which was his limit.
And this stretch of road bought them quite some time. He scooped up Su Mo by the waist, lifting her from the mud onto the ice, "Run across."
Su Mo nodded, the ice was a bit slippery, and with her mud-caked shoes, it wasn’t easy to walk, but it was much faster.
Lu Chen also grabbed Jiang Yulian’s arm and lifted her up, and the group ran towards the few lone trees on the ice.
When Su Mo was the first to reach and climbed to the top of a tree, she saw a group of people in black coming towards them.
The rain-drenched group trudged through the mud, looking utterly bedraggled.
Su Mo wiped her face, pulling the figures into view, and after recognizing them, she became alert. Lu Chen climbed to the top, sticking close to her back, shielding most of the rain from her.
Su Mo whispered, "It’s them."
A team of people, with the Empress in the middle, was attended by a Gold Element Superpower User who occasionally released his power to form a platform under her feet, allowing her to walk.
"A good number of people have survived."
Su Mo rolled up her sleeves and wiped her face, then looked around, "If they don’t hurry, they will be buried in this swamp."
There was a hint of schadenfreude in her tone.
The rain showed no signs of letting up, and the group under Su Mo’s gaze struggled more and more with their progress.
The others seemed not to have noticed them yet and kept their heads down, trudging on.
Li Qian, perched on another tree, was calm without a ripple in his spiritual power, but he spotted something crawling in the swamp in the distance.
It was an alien invasion! He turned his head and yelled at Lu Chen, "Something’s coming!"
In the rain, Li Qian’s words were somewhat unclear, but Su Mo heard them loud and clear. She embraced a thick tree trunk with one hand and drew her Tang Blade with the other, "He said something’s coming!"
Around Lu Chen, black raindrops suddenly condensed and got enveloped in an abruptly appearing Ice Crystal. Su Mo’s head pressed against his chest, she could feel the muscles in the man’s body below tightening, readying to pounce like a leopard awaiting its chance.
The Empress and her party, their lower legs nearly submerged, finally noticed the few people standing at the top of the bare trees; the nearest trees were those where Su Mo was stationed.
The Empress gritted her teeth, "Move forward!"
They moved laboriously towards them, struggling against the rain.
In the swamp, under Li Qian’s detection, roots from unidentified creatures rapidly approached the other party.
Jianxiong pulled Jiang Yulian, who was somewhat slipping, and wedged her into the fork of the tree, muttering through the rain unclearly, "Madam, sit tight."
From her higher vantage point, even without Li Qian’s warning, Su Mo saw something in the Zhao Zequn that bulged and surged towards the Empress’s group like a snake.
Her grip around the tree trunk tightened, "Is it a snake?"
"It doesn’t look like it," Lu Chen denied, his gaze growing colder and the intent to kill on him intensifying.
The one to sense that something was amiss was a superpower user beside the Empress; he turned his head fearfully towards the large expanse of swamp being pelted by rain, "There’s, there’s something!"
"Be on alert! A demon is coming! Be on alert!"
From Su Mo’s perspective, a Gold Element Superpower User in the forefront held up a shield and in the pose to throw, peered in the direction to be alerted.
Their feet sank deeper and deeper, and all around them, other than a churning black swamp of mud, was the sound of pouring rain, nothing else.
The Empress could not tolerate it anymore, estimating the distance to the trees where Su Mo and the others were, she conjured a thick vine that twisted around an empty tree on their side.
The vine clung tightly to the thick branches, and she pulled on the vine tightly; her superpower slowly retracted, taking her towards safety.
Seeing her do this, the few people by her side hurriedly pulled their legs out and moved to grab the vines. The Gold Element Superpower User waited a while without any commotion, just about to retract his lance, when the marshland in front began to churn with soil surging up, and an unknown creature burst forth rapidly. He screamed in utter terror, and immediately threw his spear, "It’s coming! It’s coming! Something’s coming!"
The golden spear plunged directly into the swampy ground, failing to stop the creature at all, but rather bubbling up a series of bubbles before sinking.
