Chapter 359: Chapter 358: Emma Village
Zhao Changsheng could not understand the feeling of losing a child, but she still patted her shoulder to offer comfort.
The two scientists, who had been kneeling on the ground till now, both sighed in relief. Having narrowly escaped danger, their joy was evident, but it was quickly noticed by Li Qian.
He squinted his eyes, suspecting that these two were up to something.
Jianxiong spoke a few words in front of the skinny man, then with a fierce expression walked up to Lu Chen and said, "Come with me, we are departing now."
Their efficiency was high. Outside the hall, after walking a few hundred meters, they stopped at five or six black modified cars and a few men riding motorcycles.
Jianxiong got into one of the cars. The modified interior was spacious, and the expanded seats were not too cramped even for six people.
He took them in one car by themselves without outsiders monitoring. He spoke in a low voice, "Boss, that monster isn’t something trivial; it’s not something made up at random. When we find the chance, we can use others to do our bidding..."
He made a slicing motion across his neck.
Lu Chen, sitting in the passenger seat, glanced at him coldly, "Who told you it was made up?"
"Ah?" Jianxiong scratched his head, disbelief evident in his wide eyes, "You guys are actually planning to hunt that freak?"
"It’s called the Original," Su Mo corrected from the back seat and continued softly, "Ling Ye indeed needs it. His body developed some issues at the B City base, and we can’t explain it all just now."
Just as she finished speaking, a stylish black motorcycle pulled up next to their car, silencing the conversation inside the vehicle.
Jianxiong leaned out the window and called out, "Old Dao, we’re heading out."
The person on the motorcycle was wearing a helmet that only revealed his eyes, but Su Mo still recognized it as the man with the husky voice.
He glanced into the car and said with a gruff voice, "I’ll be nearby, call me if something happens."
Jianxiong nodded, and the man pushed the visor of his helmet up before revving the engine and driving off.
Jianxiong started the car, following the motorcycle slowly down the winding mountain road.
"The cultists in this palace intercepted a broadcast from World Radio and even captured a private frequency signal from the Western Region, which is why they found you," Jianxiong said in a hushed voice while he drove.
Su Mo responded, "We had guessed as much."
Zhao Changsheng asked him, "And what about the inscribed symbols on the chest, do you have them too?"
The car became silent, everyone’s eyes focused on Jianxiong.
Under their gaze, he nodded freely and admitted, "I have them; they inked these messy symbols on me."
"Back then, if I didn’t get them, I’d have ended up in a cage with wild beasts."
"A beast cage?" Su Mo leaned forward, "Are you talking about where those lions are kept?"
"Yes."
Su Mo patted Jianxiong’s arm, which felt even harder. She felt a slight bitterness in her heart, "Luckily, now we are together again."
Jianxiong kept his eyes straight, turned the car around a bend, but his eyes gradually became moist. He said in a rough voice, "Don’t worry, sister. I’ll make sure we all come out of this safe and sound."
Su Mo was amused by him and sat back down.
The man on the motorcycle in front occasionally fell back to check on Jianxiong’s vehicle, seeing Su Mo and the others so well-behaved inside, he couldn’t help feeling somewhat satisfied.
After descending the mountain, the vehicles didn’t enter the city but instead took a bumpy mountain road.
The destination was a village, so this kind of dirt road wasn’t anything unusual.
It was now noon, and the warm sun streamed through the car windows, driving away the chill brought by the cold wind.
The forest also held the unique scent of natural trees.
After the apocalypse, the air became much fresher, especially in the mountains, which were silent and ethereal.
Changed by the mutation rain, the trees, of unknown species, intertwined with each other, and after passing a stone stele marking the territory, the destination became even closer.
Zhao Changsheng leaned on the window, idly asking, "Why would this original be in the village too? This place isn’t densely populated, right?"
"After the virus outbreak, people from the city had to run to the mountains for refuge, and this isolated village was overflowing with people at that time," Jianxiong replied through the rearview mirror, his dark face suddenly flushing red, then quickly averted his gaze.
Changsheng, leaning lazily back on the seat, remarked, "You seem to know quite a lot."
"Old Dao told me, back then we planned to scavenge supplies where the population was dense, heard there was an uncontaminated vegetable greenhouse here, so we decided to take a look. It turned out to be a living hell, and we almost didn’t make it back," Jianxiong said with a hint of sigh.
As the vehicle moved deeper into the forest, the village up ahead slowly came into view.
Hidden among the forest, the village was utterly silent, filled with the decomposing, blackened bodies of zombies scattered across the ground, their organs strewn about, some even tangled in the tires and crushed, emitting waves of foul stench.
"Are these bodies your doing?" Su Mo glanced outside the window briefly then withdrew her gaze.
"Mostly, but mostly those disgusting originals ate them," Jianxiong said, parking the car by the roadside, his expression turning fierce again.
The motorcycle ahead also stopped; a fully armed group got out of the vehicles.
Before even officially entering the village, Su Mo already saw two shoulder-mounted rocket launchers carried by some individuals; they were well-prepared.
The lean man Jianxiong called Old Dao toyed with the short knife in his hand and walked a few steps forward, "Split up, call out if there’s trouble."
The group, nearly thirty strong, immediately dispersed and entered the village.
Their organization was strong, and they did not move alone but began searching in groups of five.
Including Jianxiong, there were five people standing around Su Mo and her group, watching them.
The few of them didn’t mind but quietly heightened their alertness, walking into the village one after the other.
The place was quite backward, with most houses made of yellow earth and bricks, as the interior was very dark. Teams of people would first make some noise outside before entering each house to lure out any zombies that might be inside.
Following beside Lu Chen, they also searched a mud house; the door was wooden with a rusty lock hanging on it, and Jianxiong kicked the door open with one powerful kick.
The interior was small and sparse, with nothing but an old wooden table and a dirty white porcelain cup imprinted with Grandpa Mao, apart from a decomposing elderly corpse lying on the bed, swollen and oozing yellow fluid.
The stench was so intense that Su Mo could only stand a few seconds inside before she had to step back out; she looked at the mud houses on both sides, people were continuously going in and out, yet not a single scream of a zombie was heard, however, the moss and weeds growing in the corners thrived wildly, very lush.
