The Chef Rules the Last Days -
Chapter 356 - 355
Chapter 356: 355
Li Qian squinted his eyes as he watched him disappear at the door, keenly smelling a hint of a rival in love.
Surveying the room, Su Mo noted there was only a large bed and no windows. The European-style chandelier overhead emitted a dim yellow light, "It’s getting late, you guys should go rest. I’ll take care of things here."
They all needed substantial energy to face the forthcoming events. Lu Chen nodded and earnestly instructed her, "I’m right next door. Call me if you need anything."
"Got it."
After the two men left the room, Su Mo closed the door and walked to the European-style wrought iron table where she prepared three cups of Biluochun Tea, one for each to drink.
Worried that Zhao Changsheng might have internal injuries, she also made a cup of Zijuan Tea for her to drink.
Feeling the pain in her back significantly alleviated, Changsheng let out a sigh of relief. The impact wasn’t that severe to begin with, and after downing two cups of tea, she felt incredibly soothed and didn’t want to lie prone anymore; she changed her position to lie flat on her back.
The bed wasn’t very large, but it was just the right size for three women to sleep on. After storing away the tea set, Su Mo opened a small door to find a toilet layered with thick dust, seemingly unused for a long time.
Behind the toilet was a small window, nailed shut with many nails as if specifically done to prevent escapes.
Frowning, Su Mo stepped back and closed the door, "The toilet here seems unusable. We’ll just have to make do for the night."
"We reek," Zhao Changsheng said, picking at a large patch of dried blood on her clothes with a disgusted expression.
Stopping her hand, Su Mo said, "Just lie down for the night like this. Being too clean isn’t good either."
"I’ll listen to you," Changsheng said, taking a dusty pillow and giving it a couple of pats before settling down to sleep.
Jiang Yulian had been standing in the room the whole time. Even though Jianxiong’s words had put her slightly at ease, her heart couldn’t settle down completely with her child in someone else’s hands.
Removing her coat, Su Mo saw Jiang Yulian standing still with a face full of worries and couldn’t help but walk over, "Aunt Jiang, we’re on their territory. For now, we can only trust Jianxiong and mustn’t act rashly."
Jiang Yulian sat down at the edge of the bed, arms crossed, "I know, but I can’t help worrying about the child."
Pulling back the corner of the quilt, Su Mo insisted that she lie down, "Go to sleep, Aunt Jiang. Lu Chen and I won’t let anything happen to him."
"Hmm."
...
The night was deepening.
Lights blazed in a laboratory within the palace.
Ling Ye was placed on a cold surgical table as two doctors in white coats studied him.
"The test subject specifically requested by the Western Region, I don’t see anything special. However, the rate of his cell division is extraordinarily fast," a gloved doctor observed, examining a vial of blood freshly drawn from Ling Ye’s arm.
"Keep your voice down," his colleague nudged him and whispered, "We’re just posing as researchers. If we discover anything else, that’d be unusual. Let’s hope those crazy cultists don’t catch on."
"Got it. But what can we actually find out about this guy? The Empress wants to create an Evolution Potion like in City B, but doesn’t even consider that the base there has turned into a walking corpse inferno. Still thinking about this stuff is just asking for death."
Speaking of the two, they were recent veterinary graduates from Medical University, who by fortune had survived several months post-apocalypse. Initially planning to join the base in City B rumored to have the Evolution Potion, they found the base destroyed before they even arrived. During their wandering, they had the misfortune of running into this group of heretics. If it weren’t for their medical knowledge and a knack for bluffing, they might have had to take a trip to the Demon Cage.
The thought immediately brought a cold sweat to one of them as he cautiously glanced outside the lab door, whispering, "Anyway, let’s get this kid awake first. Otherwise, we’ll have trouble reporting back."
"Alright."
"..."
The sun had just risen, and inside the room, a dim yellow lamp had been on all night. Su Mo couldn’t discern the current time, but she woke up promptly at dawn, according to her biological clock.
She and Zhao Changsheng had both slept on the outside, with Jiang Yulian waking up in the middle to heavy dark circles under her eyes.
She had spent the whole night worrying, unable to sleep well.
Without saying much, Su Mo let her condense some water for the three of them to wash up. As soon as she opened the door to step out, Lu Chen and Li Qian also got up from the next room.
Overnight, they hadn’t suffered any harassment or disturbances.
Aside from Jiang Yulian, everyone else had had a decent sleep.
No sooner had they gotten out of bed than six strangely dressed individuals emerged from around the corridor bend.
Men and women both, all wore black robes and bore strange symbols on their faces or arms. Su Mo even saw the leading woman’s garment was wide open at the breast, revealing most of her snowy skin, etched with an eerie angel pattern.
She covertly took a few glances, thinking that although she wasn’t familiar with cults, she had never seen one so bold.
"Did you all sleep well?" the woman asked, holding a tray in her hands as she approached them.
The tray contained several black garments.
Su Mo: "Quite well."
"Never felt so good," Zhao Changsheng’s tone was a bit sharp, clearly meant sarcastically.
However, these people didn’t care. The leading woman happily inquired, "So, after one night’s time, have you all considered your answer?"
The expression on her face seemed to confirm, as if she was certain they would agree.
Lu Chen took two steps forward and spoke indifferently, "My team being chosen as God’s envoys, is indeed a great honor."
The woman’s eyes lit up with joy, and tear-like droplets appeared to gather around her eyes, "I knew it, no one would refuse to believe in God."
Just because they agreed, these people were so moved?
Su Mo shrugged her shoulders; the extent of their brainwashing was indeed terrifying.
"Honored envoys, to formally meet the Empress, you must bathe in the Holy Water. Please follow me," said the woman, with a light step leading them out of the hallway.
The palace here was vast, filled with numerous rooms. The woman led them to the doors of two chambers, then turned her head with a mysterious look, "Gentlemen and ladies, please separate. There will be mortals inside specially serving the envoys. Please enter."
"We’ll see each other later, then" Su Mo waved to Lu Chen.
Li Qian gave Zhao Changsheng a supervisory look, and knowing she was alright, followed Lu Chen into a room filled with white mist.
Su Mo also took Jiang Yulian into their exclusive chamber.
Upon entering, a great surge of hot air greeted them, and kneeling on the tiled floor in front of them were three women clad only in towels.
"Honored Envoy, please bathe."
Su Mo looked towards the huge pool beside them, filled with hot water steaming and flowing. She exclaimed in surprise, "A hot spring?"
