Chapter 353: Chapter 352: Demon Cage
He had received the order and was about to leave when the woman behind him spoke again, "Go get something for this poor benefaction to eat."
Jianxiong breathed a sigh of relief and relayed the Empress’s command.
Awakening once again.
It was the abnormally noisy roars by her ears, some unbearable to witness and some accompanied by sighs.
Su Mo’s eyelashes fluttered; she was awake.
She lay on the cold, damp cement floor for a while as her thoughts slowly returned. Above her was a wooden roof, and a circle of people looked down at her through the railings from the high walls.
All kinds of faces, mostly young.
A groan sounded, and Su Mo turned her head to find Zhao Changsheng and Jiang Yulian lying not far from her.
She tried moving her fingers. Her strength had returned, and she very slowly sat up, leaning against the wall to observe her surroundings.
It was a square cage enclosed from all sides by high concrete walls, with only one side having a large iron door. She squinted and peered into the distance toward it. The other side of the door seemed to lead to an L-shaped passage, but for now, nothing could be seen.
Was she there?
This question arose in her mind along with an ominous premonition.
She paused again, then, supporting herself against the wall, she shakily stood up on her newly sentient legs. Zhao Changsheng also awoke and managed to stand up on her own, given her robust physical condition.
"Who are these people?"
"I don’t know," Su Mo shook her head and walked over to squat next to Jiang Yulian, gently patting her face.
Under Su Mo’s patting, Jiang Yulian also woke up, but being of an older age, her limbs were numb and it took a while for her to sit up.
Su Mo and Zhao Changsheng together dragged her to a corner away from the iron door and leaned her against the wall, "Rest for a while first."
Once her senses had returned, Jiang Yulian realized she was empty-handed; her eyes immediately reddened, and her tone became frantically worried, "My child, my child!"
"He’s fine!" Su Mo steadied her shoulders, calmly comforting, "Aunt Jiang, he’s fine, let’s deal with our current predicament first, don’t lose your composure."
Despite Su Mo’s comforting, Jiang Yulian’s heart still ached as if it was pricked by needles. She looked around, and at the crowd above who had become noisier upon their awakening, she anxiously asked, "Who are they?"
Before Su Mo could answer, a series of harsh bell rings sounded, and the crowd overhead fell silent.
A woman dressed in a black robe with gold lace at the cuffs, holding a just-fed and sleeping Jiang Zhuoyang, walked out.
The crowd spontaneously made way for her, and she stood by the railing, placing a chair behind her and sitting down with the child, seemingly adopting a spectator’s stance.
Jiang Yulian recognized the child in her arms at a glance. She tried to lift herself on her weak legs, "My child! Give him back to me!"
Su Mo looked up at the clearly dominant middle-aged woman, her face covered with bizarre black tattoos that almost looked like unknown English letters.
Jiang Yulian’s pleas went unanswered; even the imposing woman didn’t spare her a glance but instead instructed someone beside her, "Begin."
In the silent crowd, an elder stepped forward, staring at the three below. He spoke very slowly, each word imbued with piety, "The Demon Cage is a trial by the gods. Whether they can become Angels for the gods, we shall wait and see!"
"Angels for the gods?" Zhao Changsheng looked up at the crowd above that had resumed their wild shouting, her fox eyes filled with frustration.
Su Mo’s face darkened as she looked towards the iron door, thinking she might guess what was behind it.
"Beep beep beep beep!"
In the upper left corner of the iron door, something similar to an alarm began flashing a red light.
Feeling a surge of crisis, Su Mo stepped in front of Jiang Yulian and drew her Tang Blade, facing Zhao Changsheng, "Stop worrying about that and protect Aunt Jiang."
Upon hearing the series of alarms, Zhao Changsheng turned around, a sense of dread filling her mind, and the blue light in her hand intensified, producing a long Thunder Whip, "Are we being made a spectacle of by someone?"
The woman above, seeing the Thunder Whip in Zhao Changsheng’s hand, had a fleeting change in expression. After all this time in the apocalypse, they all knew that Thunder powers were rare, and those who possessed them were invariably linked with the word ’formidable.’
Hearing the increasingly loud cheers from above, Su Mo frowned, "It’s more like an arena."
"For who?"
As the iron door fully opened, Su Mo, with her sharp ears, immediately heard the growling from the L-shaped corridor behind the door and promptly answered, "Zombies!"
When the first zombie appeared in the dark corridor, Su Mo saw it was just a Level 2, with no mutations or evolutions.
The moment it charged out, Su Mo rushed forward and neatly decapitated it with her blade.
The stench of blood spurted out, but Su Mo quickly retreated back to Jiang Yulian’s side without getting a single drop on her.
"Lowly devils are not suitable for them," the woman in the seat declared.
What followed were even louder shouts of encouragement.
Upon hearing this, the elder pressed another button.
The alarm on the wall began emitting red light and screeching again.
Hearing their conversation, Su Mo immediately assumed a combat stance, took a step back with one leg, leaned forward, and swung her blade.
In the narrow, enclosed corridor, no fewer than ten Level 3 zombies and one Level 4 zombie surged out at once. Before it even reached her, its long tongue had already shot out.
Zhao Changsheng quickly whipped her Thunder Whip around the tongue. The split tip with four tentacles covered in sharp teeth stopped just half a meter away from Su Mo.
Swinging her blade and using her superpower, Su Mo dashed forward, severing the zombie’s tongue. Along the way, she also kicked over another zombie and unhesitatingly swung her blade to decapitate it.
The Level 4 zombie, now tongueless, was struck hard by Su Mo as she leaped into the air, slamming it backward onto the advancing zombies behind it with her knee to its dislocated jaw.
When she landed again, the Tang Blade swiftly followed with a decisive slash.
The speed was incredibly fast.
The spectators at the top couldn’t help but express their amazement.
"I think they qualify to be Angel Envoys, just look at that speed; I can barely see with my own eyes," one observer remarked.
"That Thunder element is strong too, the high-voltage on the whip instantly snapped a devil’s neck," another added.
"The men’s performance is also impressive, especially the silver-haired one I just went to see; his fighting power is astonishing!"
"..."
The ongoing discussions did not distract Su Mo and Zhao Changsheng. Seated on the ground, Jiang Yulian was worried about her child but knew they had to keep fighting, so she did her best to send out Water Arrows to help.
