Chapter 348: Chapter 347: State Fermentation
As Su Mo and the others walked in, Li Ming said with a smirk, "Oh, you’re quite cooperative? Did you find out early this morning?"
With a beaming smile, Su Mo asked, "Shall we go?"
Li Ming squinted his eyes and gestured to someone beside him, leading them towards the entrance.
Their commotion wasn’t too loud, but it woke some people who peered out from their windows, including Mu Rou, who hadn’t slept well all night.
"Su Mo!" Mu Rou, seeing that they appeared to be held hostage, hurried over.
Under escort, Su Mo turned her head back, "You’re up early."
"What’s going on?" Mu Rou tried to get closer to her but was stopped.
"It’s nothing, we’re just leaving early," Su Mo replied.
Mu Rou was astonished—this situation didn’t look at all like they were leaving voluntarily.
She followed the group silently, contemplating how to rescue them.
Su Mo saw through her thoughts and called out to her, "Mu Rou."
Mu Rou looked up to see Su Mo mouth the words to her, ’seize the opportunity.’
Mu Rou stopped in her tracks, stupefied, even as she watched Su Mo and the others being pushed onto a vehicle, wondering, seize what opportunity?
Seven people were stuffed into the lengthened bus, with five armored vehicles parked behind it. To be on the safe side, two-thirds of the superpower users from the epidemic prevention zone had come out to escort them.
The imposing fleet made the seven people sitting in the tin carriage, along with a driver and Li Ming, seem rather sparse.
Looking out the window, Su Mo remarked, "It’s quite thoughtful of you to send so many people to escort us out."
"Cut the act," Li Ming was not in the mood to play these games, touching the red scarf around his neck, his eyes showing undisguised fierceness.
Su Mo closed her mouth and curled the corners of her mouth. Although she looked calm on the surface, in fact, she was somewhat nervous inside.
She wondered if Yang Yichu was still... around.
The huge tin carriage began to sway and set off as the gate opened. Sitting on a chair, Li Qian asked with a gentle demeanor, "There are only 7 of us, do we need such a big bus?"
Li Ming glanced at him, a cigarette dangling in his mouth, "This bus is for carrying supplies in case of emergencies. A year’s worth of supplies in exchange for you guys is a bargain."
After lighting up, Li Ming started to fill the air with smoke. Under the haze, his expression grew inscrutable as he looked at Su Mo, "What I’m curious about, is how you, a woman, managed to break through my brother’s barrier?"
As the topic turned towards her, Su Mo raised her eyes to meet his, laughing with clear, bright eyes, "If I said it’s natural, would you believe me?"
Li Ming let out a snort of laughter, scoffing, "If it’s natural, that would explain it. No wonder the lab specifically asked for you,"
The bus entered a tunnel enveloped in darkness, followed just minutes later by a blinding white light. However, the weather today seemed overcast, as if it might rain.
Su Mo’s smile dimmed like the weather, "What lab specifically asked for me?"
She hadn’t heard anything about this in the conversations she’d eavesdropped on.
Lu Chen’s eyes also instantly darkened, they all smelled an unusual scent, it made sense to call for Ling Ye, but what did this have to do with Su Mo?
Everyone’s first thought was whether the system had been exposed, but then again, they realized it wasn’t right, Su Mo’s system was only known to a few of them, including Jianxiong whose life and death were unknown.
Li Ming exhaled a few puffs of smoke and looked outside at the increasingly gloomy weather, "Telling you now doesn’t make any difference, the Western Laboratory, the place you’re headed to."
"The Western?" Jiang Yulian’s face couldn’t hide her surprise.
Zhao Changsheng’s expression also turned quite horrifying.
Su Mo was even more shocked as she looked toward Lu Chen, "What’s going on? There’s actually a laboratory over there?!"
They knew that their original goal was to head for the Western Region.
It was evident that Lu Chen hadn’t expected this either; his eyes turned cold as he quickly recollected the half-seen map in his mind, "Where do we make the trade?"
Without giving a clear answer, Li Ming just pointed outside the window, "Don’t think about resisting!"
The two modified cars driving alongside the bus had their rooftop heavy machine guns aimed at the people inside at all times, "If you get turned into a beehive, it wouldn’t be good for me either."
His posture clearly indicated that he planned to take them to their destination.
Su Mo bit her lip, they had to figure out a way to escape before they arrived; she shuddered at the mere mention of the word ’laboratory’, from what she knew, the laboratory was by no means a good place; it was filled with all sorts of monsters wearing human skin.
Inside the bus, the driver felt something was off, in just the time of a few conversations, he had already run over several zombies coming head-on, "Brother Li! Something’s... not right."
Li Ming moved behind the driver’s seat to look forward, "What’s up?"
"Zombies... there are more of them, we don’t usually encounter so many zombies on this road," the driver had barely finished speaking when the vehicle jerked violently, and Li Ming steadied his chair just in time to prevent himself from lurching forward.
Su Mo almost got thrown off her seat, but Lu Chen pressed down on her leg and helped her sit steady; she turned her head and after seeing Ling Ye, who was being held by Li Qian and was sleeping soundly, she let out a sigh of relief.
"It’s normal to see more zombies entering from the edge of G city," Li Ming said calmly, but the doubt in his eyes betrayed him.
"That’s true, but it’s very strange," the driver pointed at the zombies that kept charging forward recklessly as if they were insane, "Look at them. They’re like mad, continuously rushing forward. At this rate, the tires will get stuck with their disgusting rotting flesh and bones before we even reach the signal tower."
Listening to their conversation, Su Mo focused on the green countdown above the driver’s head; obviously, he was also part of last night’s affair, she guessed that maybe the 10% status effect was kicking in.
Lu Chen shrewdly picked up on the mention of ’signal tower’ from their conversation; he had seen the national map as well as the boundary map of G city Li Ming held. The signal tower was not far away; he pondered that if he recalled correctly, they still had to pass through two more boundary points.
These places were unmanned and swarming with zombies, making the passage extremely dangerous.
That also explained the need for so many escorts; on one hand, to guard against them, and on the other, against zombies.
At that moment, the walkie-talkie in the bus crackled to life, it was a transmission from the two battle cars following behind, "Li Ming, what’s with these zombies? They’re throwing themselves at our vehicle like they’re not afraid of dying, our wheels..."
The person hadn’t finished speaking when there was a loud "bang" from the rear. The wheel of a battle car trailing them got jammed and broke off completely, causing the vehicle to swerve and collide with the car beside it before coming to an abrupt halt.
"Stop the car!" Li Ming immediately shouted.
The bus came to a screeching stop, flanked by a small but relentless wave of zombies hurling themselves at the vehicle; the sound of their sharp nails scratching against the carriage was piercingly shrill.
