Chapter 339: Chapter 338: Setting a Trap

Aunt Mei followed her gaze to look at the painting, then shook her head, "I’m a simpleton, I don’t get it. If you’re not going to the bathroom, Miss, let’s get going."

"Okay," Mu Rou did not dwell on it and followed her out.

When Su Mo peeked out from the window again, the previously tight window had quietly opened a crack.

She curved her lips into a smile, not expecting Mu Rou to be so clever.

Su Mo rolled into the room, and just as her feet touched the ground, Aunt Mei, who was waiting for Mu Rou to use the bathroom, suddenly turned and headed towards the living room.

Su Mo quickly surveyed her surroundings. There was nothing to hide behind, so she looked up at the ceiling and promptly climbed up the walls to it.

At that moment, she clung to the ceiling like Spiderman, while Aunt Mei entered the living room, her destination being the window, the very spot where Mu Rou had just been.

Su Mo held her breath and quietly hung upside down from the ceiling. Even with the boost from her Spiderman state, she didn’t have spurs on her legs to cling with, so she couldn’t hold on for long.

Fortunately, Aunt Mei only walked over to the window to look outside, then promptly locked it again.

As the sound of two people descending the stairs made the house plunge into darkness, Su Mo flipped down from the ceiling. She quietly moved to the attic’s hiding place and found the rope hidden at the top.

She gently pulled down the ladder.

Without the separation of floorboards, every clear, strange noise made Su Mo raise her guard. She took out her Tang Blade and slowly ascended.

The space above was small, and with her night vision, Su Mo only saw a simple dining table with a few chairs arranged around it, on which sat...

As she raised her gaze, she took in the sight of two female zombies, one large and one small.

Smelling the scent of living flesh, the two zombies immediately became restless, floundering on the chairs, their wrists bearing deep, bone-visible wounds from being bound with wire.

Su Mo walked over for a closer look, only to realize that not only were they restrained in movement, but their mouths were also firmly sealed with black tape. She narrowed her eyes and brought her vision closer, spotting a trace of fresh flesh near the edge of the tape, which suggested that they had fed not long ago.

That old woman had claimed this morning that all the mutated zombies had been shot dead, yet here were two.

A bold idea formed in Su Mo’s head; she had been suspicious earlier, and now she could confirm that Aunt Mei was dragging these bodies back as food.

Walking around the table, Su Mo felt some disdain in her heart. Li Yun, a man whose actions contradicted his appearance, had killed all the zombies in the epidemic prevention zone, yet he was feeding his own with human flesh.

This well-preserved zombified little girl and the adult must be Li Yun’s wife and child.

The little face did have quite a resemblance.

Wait a minute... his wife?

Su Mo suddenly realized something was amiss; hadn’t the old woman said that Li Yun’s wife was a superpower user who turned into a zombie?

She took another careful look at the female zombie. She could be sure there was no superpower within it. What was going on?

A superpower disappearing into thin air?

This question left a big question mark in Su Mo’s mind.

She needed to leave this place quickly; it was not wise to stay any longer.

She only stayed up there for a brief minute before she put away her blade and climbed down, careful not to be discovered. She especially looked down to check for any footprints she may have left before carefully retreating.

After leaving the attic, she restored everything to its original state, then climbed out through the window and made her way down slowly. When she was two meters above the ground, she simply let go and jumped, falling straight into the arms of Lu Chen, who had been waiting below for quite some time.

"How did it go?" the man asked as he set her on the ground and took her hand, carefully leading her back along the small path.

"I’ll tell you when we’re back," Su Mo said in a low voice, gripping his arm. "The disappearance of those students is almost certainly connected to Li Yun."

Since most people were over on the clearing eating meat, Su Mo and Lu Chen’s return was rather smooth. However, just as they reached home and were about to enter the house, Mu Rou was already there waiting for them, with a cup of water Jiang Yulian had saved on the table.

Clearly, she had come straight over after finishing at the ’restroom’.

Mu Rou stood up and called out softly, "Su Mo."

"Take a seat. I actually owe you thanks," Su Mo said as she and Lu Chen both sat down.

Jiang Yulian looked outside and asked, "Are there still two who haven’t returned?"

Su Mo replied, "Just in case, they’ll stay a bit longer."

Jiang Yulian nodded. "Then you guys go ahead and talk; I’ll go change the baby’s diaper."

She picked up the child and walked upstairs, the wooden steps creaking under her weight.

With just the three of them left in the small living room, Mu Rou thought for a moment before tentatively asking, "Did you find anything when you specifically went to the living room?"

Su Mo leaned on the couch and asked with a smile, "Aren’t you curious about the whereabouts of that corpse?"

A hint of joy appeared on Mu Rou’s face. "Did you find out?"

"Fed to the zombies. Your Excellency, the Governor, is using human flesh to feed zombies," Su Mo said lightly.

Lu Chen, sitting aside, had a cold look in his eyes.

Mu Rou’s face fell, and her hands tightened on her thighs. "If that’s the case, they didn’t just save us because we are superpower users, but also because of those ordinary students who can be used as food..."

Su Mo felt she had a point; after all, the original residents here were all relatives of these people, so the only meat available to eat was that of the outsiders like them.

"We’ve got a traitor among us," Mu Rou said as she picked up the cup for a sip, then continued in a hoarse whisper, "Some students saw that missing boy leaving through the wire fence, but I suspect he’s lying."

Su Mo’s interest was piqued; she leaned forward, looking at Mu Rou. "Why do you care so much about those students? Is it just because they are your classmates?"

Mu Rou was caught off guard by her piercingly clear gaze, feeling as if she were completely exposed under Su Mo’s scrutiny. Mu Rou looked down and asked, "What do you mean?"

With a slight smile, Su Mo said, "You’re worried about He Fei’s safety, aren’t you? After all, he’s your only leader."

As if it hit home, Mu Rou held the cup for a long time without speaking.

Su Mo knew she’d guessed correctly and added, "You’re on someone else’s turf. Either you leave with dignity, or you stay with grievances swallowed. These people are tough, and the forces around the edge of the epidemic prevention zone have been pulled back. You and your handful of superpower users won’t be able to break out with that group of ignorant students."

In conclusion, Su Mo added, "Besides, there’s the traitor you mentioned. If he really is a traitor, then Li Yun must have given him some material compensation. A trip to the unfinished building to find him would reveal everything."

Mu Rou finished her water, uncertain whether Su Mo was inciting her to oppose the epidemic prevention zone or advising her to be careful.
