Chapter 336: Chapter 335: Investigation

"Someone helped..." Su Mo suddenly widened her eyes, sat up, and turned to look at Lu Chen, her tone rising a notch, "Dr. Jiang Zhou once said that there are many large and small laboratories like his spread across the world... Could it be?"

"Did Lu Jin find those laboratories to cooperate with?" Su Mo felt a bit horrified. Wasn’t this efficiency too fast?

They had only escaped from the B city base a few days ago. How could he have managed that?

"Could it be that he had already made contact with the outside while at the base?" This speculation made Su Mo’s face darken.

"Don’t think too much," Lu Chen pulled her onto the bed and held her in his arms, his eyes gleaming with a cold light, "I won’t let anything happen to you."

Su Mo buried her face in his neck, the coolness of the man’s skin unconsciously made her seek warmth. She was quiet for a while before she softly said, "Got it."

The night was thick, and inside the room, the man’s eyes remained open for a long time.

...

The next morning, Su Mo was woken up by a noisy commotion outside.

As soon as she opened her eyes, there was no one beside her; the sun was already high outside, clearly indicating she had overslept, it was almost noon.

Su Mo hurriedly put on shoes, washed up, and went downstairs to find Lu Chen and Li Qian gathered around the sofa, once again studying the map.

Zhao Changsheng and Jiang Yulian, holding her child, were at the door watching the movements outside. Su Mo went into Ling Ye’s room.

The kid was still deeply asleep; she touched his face and tried calling him a few times with no response whatsoever.

Su Mo sighed, came out of the room, and went to the kitchen to cook some vegetable porridge, calling them to have a late breakfast.

"What’s all the noise outside?" Su Mo asked as she distributed the porridge and sat down to eat.

"Two groups of people have returned; they’re from outside the epidemic prevention zone, heard they are the guards from the border area, many of them are injured," Jiang Yulian said while feeding her child and sipping her porridge.

"So you guys got up early to look at the map because you’re finding a new route?" Su Mo looked towards Lu Chen and Li Qian.

Li Qian nodded, "The border is unmanned now. We’ve learned about the radio issue, and we need to get out before we become sitting ducks."

Su Mo agreed, "We also set a three-day deadline with Li Ming. There’re still two days left; we still have to wait."

No one disagreed with this point; after all, breaking the agreement suddenly could arouse suspicion.

After breakfast, there was a knock on their door.

Jiang Yulian handed her child to Su Mo and placed the dishes into the sink, "You talk; I’ll wash."

Su Mo didn’t refuse and held the child on her lap as she sat on the sofa. Lu Chen went to open the door.

The visitor was none other than Mu Rou, whom they had met last night.

Seeing her enter the room, Su Mo gestured with her chin towards the sofa nearby, "Have a seat."

Mu Rou thanked her and sat down, her voice low and hoarse as she said, "There’s been an incident."

Su Mo paused while playing with the child, looked up, and asked, "What happened?"

"One of our students is missing."

"Then you should ask the people from the epidemic prevention zone; what does this have to do with us?" Zhao Changsheng came over and crossed his legs casually.

Su Mo, however, asked Mu Rou, "You’re not suspecting the body from last night, are you?"

Mu Rou nodded, seriousness in her intact right eye, "I haven’t told He Fei; they are still looking for people in the unfinished building."

"What body?" Zhao Changsheng looked confused, "Momo, what did you do last night?"

Su Mo gave a slight smile and carefully placed the child on the sofa, "I didn’t do much, just went to sit at Mu Rou’s house for a while, found out Li Yun had killed someone and hid the body."

Li Qian leaned against the wall, "Why would he kill your students and hide them for no reason?"

This question stumped Mu Rou; honestly, she didn’t know why either, was it just an intuition?

Seeing her expression, Su Mo knew that she probably didn’t understand the matter herself.

"Perhaps I was mistaken," Mu Rou stood up, "I’ll go back and check again tonight."

Su Mo narrowed her eyes. Was she trying to imitate what she had done last night?

She stood up and said softly, "You can’t do it."

Mu Rou turned back and looked at her, "He Fei and his team have been looking for people all day, and the governor’s explanation is that the fence was faulty, and the students ran off."

Lu Chen: "Did you guys go check the fence?"

Mu Rou nodded, "Yes, we checked, and indeed there was a hole, seemingly made for entry and exit."

Zhao Changsheng: "Then isn’t that the answer?"

Mu Rou shook her head, "You all should know, most of our students are very timid; he wouldn’t and couldn’t do such a thing."

Thus, Mu Rou was steadfast in her belief that there was a problem with someone on Li Yun’s end.

However, this wasn’t something Su Mo and the others were considering right now. She said softly, "Don’t do anything foolish without solid evidence."

Mu Rou nodded, seemingly realizing these people had no intention of helping. She wasn’t too disappointed and left.

Su Mo looked out at the bright sun and suddenly said, "The weather is so nice, let’s go out for a walk."

Lu Chen agreed enthusiastically, "Sure."

Once outside, the path was busier with mostly burly men, their intense aura of killing impossible to conceal.

At a glance, one could tell who had come back from the border.

It seemed the past in G City’s borders was anything but peaceful. Su Mo walked slowly, starting to plan how to spend the next two days.

As they passed by Li Ming’s house, Su Mo stopped; a girl in a wheelchair was sitting motionless at the door, sunbathing with a vacant stare.

"Is this Li Ming’s wife?" Zhao Changsheng assessed her from head to toe.

After seeing a urine bag hanging next to the wheelchair, Su Mo nodded, "It should be."

Inside, having just hung up his radio, Li Ming walked out of the house excitedly; upon seeing Su Mo and the others at his doorstep, his face froze in an ecstatic expression.

Li Qian’s gold-rimmed glasses reflected the sunlight; beneath the lenses, a sharp light flickered in his dark eyes, "He seems very excited."

"Let’s go say hello," Su Mo suggested, a smile lifting her face as she walked leisurely toward him, dragging Lu Chen along in a relaxed manner.

As they approached, Li Ming quickly adjusted his facial expression, "Yo, what brings you guys out today?"

"Nice weather, just taking a stroll," Su Mo said cheerfully. She lowered her gaze to the girl in the wheelchair, "This is..."

"My wife," Li Ming approached the young woman extremely cautiously, squatting next to her to carefully adjust the blanket on her.

His tone of voice was completely different from when he usually spoke.

Su Mo complimented, "Very pretty."

Li Ming’s thankful response carried a touch of sincerity.
