The Chef Rules the Last Days -
Chapter 327 - 326: Something’s Not Right
Chapter 327: Chapter 326: Something’s Not Right
In the car, Lu Chen stared at Su Mo’s face for a while, as if he thought of something. He took a white short-sleeve shirt from the Space, folded it a few times, and covered her mouth and nose gently. He then pulled out her ponytail, tying a knot with the two short sleeves at the back of her head.
Touching the cloth covering her face, Su Mo asked curiously, "What’s this for?"
"Just verifying something," the man said softly, holding her hand.
Verifying? Su Mo realized that it might be the zombies that could possibly be coming for her.
She looked down, finding the whole situation inconceivable.
"We’re about to arrive. Get ready."
Li Ming’s voice came through the car’s intercom.
The superpower users in several vehicles braced for action.
The car sped into the area infested with zombies.
Windows on both sides of the five vehicles were opened, with gunshots and skills of superpower users being unleashed out of the windows, targeting the zombies on both sides.
For reasons unknown to herself, Su Mo’s first reaction upon seeing these zombies was to lower her head.
She was actually afraid that what Lu Chen said might be true. If the zombies were indeed coming for her and recognized her now, wouldn’t that be like asking for death?
Anyway, it would be dealt with after entering the Refining Factory.
The zombies lingering around the Refining Factory were scattered but included a few High-level Zombies with intelligence.
Laoba accelerated the car to a very high speed, almost flooring the gas to follow the vehicle ahead into the Refining Factory.
The superpower users in the car ahead were re-condensing an earthen wall at the gate of the Refining Factory; they needed to rush inside quickly.
On their side, a zombie with a disjointed jaw, its eyeballs frantically rolling in its sockets, shot out its Long Tongue. The tongue’s tip, filled with sharp hooks, split into four tentacles and grabbed the passenger side door where Li Qian was seated. The sharp teeth nearly scratched his thigh as they pierced the door.
The great pulling force ripped the entire passenger door off, and Li Qian, luckily fastened by the seatbelt, managed to cling onto the handrail, narrowly avoiding being thrown out.
Seeing this, Lu Chen’s superpower surged, and he immediately used Ice Seal on the passenger door area.
Laoba managed to correct the car which was almost turned away from the route, and Su Mo, lying on her own calf and lifting half her head, stared ahead at the road. "How does it look outside? Is it bad?"
"No, we’re about to go in," Zhao Changsheng intermittently threw Thunder Balls outside to stop the zombies from getting close.
Ahead, an earthen wall had been formed, leaving only a small gap for vehicles to pass through. The five cars rushed in one by one.
Immediately after, the gap was sealed up.
The cars came to a screeching halt inside the Refining Factory. There were still a few wandering zombies around, but not too many. Li Ming and his people quickly took care of them.
Once it was safe, Su Mo finally sat upright and followed the others out of the car.
The body of He Rong, gnawed to pieces, lay not far from the living quarters.
Almost all the blood had drained from her body, staining the surrounding ground a dark red.
She was fortunate not to have turned into a zombie but still had a gruesome death.
"Quick, quick, quick, let’s move, lads!" Li Ming commanded everyone to take action as soon as he got off the car.
Lu Chen approached him with three others. "What do you need us to do?" he asked.
"Guard the gate with Laoba," Li Ming pointed to the freshly sealed earthen wall and said.
Lu Chen nodded in agreement.
Seeing this, Li Ming immediately ran towards the oil storage area with Ding Yan.
They knew that there was still a good amount of oil here, but it was rare to come out, and they feared accidents, so today they had to take as much back as they could.
He Fei got out of the car, nodded to Su Mo and the others as a sign of greeting, and then followed the others away.
Su Mo looked back at the tall earthen wall, "So, we came out this time just to be onlookers?"
"Come up and take a look, come to help," Li Qian went over to the collapsed stand beside them and, together with Lu Chen, set it upright.
It had been used by He Fei and his team to monitor the situation outside the wall.
After moving it to the backside of the earthen wall, Su Mo touched her face but didn’t go up for a look.
Lu Chen climbed up the stand, and outside the wall, the zombies seemed not to have noticed anything unusual, but some nearby began to gather in small groups.
They were attracted by the gunfire.
Seeing that they were observing, Su Mo turned her attention to the oil barrel rack and walked over.
Ding Yan was on top, tuning the oil pump. Seeing Su Mo come up by herself, he glanced at her but didn’t make conversation.
Clearly, he was still upset about yesterday’s unpleasant lunch.
Su Mo placed her hand on the chilly railing, looking out, "You’re a good teacher."
Below, He Fei was leading Li Ming and his people into the tent to fetch the remaining oil.
Ding Yan gave her a sideways glance, continuing his silent work.
Su Mo turned to him, "Don’t be so obstinate, even without the intervention of the epidemic prevention zone, those students of yours wouldn’t have survived much longer."
After tinkering for a while, Ding Yan pressed the start button. As the machine began to operate, he finally spoke, "I know."
He had heard what Mu Rou said that day.
He just felt heartbroken that these people could be so ruthless.
Su Mo cracked a faint smile, turned her head back, and continued to look out from above. Her gaze suddenly sharpened, and then she quickly focused on a corner at the far end of the street.
It was obscured by a vehicle, but that didn’t prevent her from seeing that huge figure flash by.
"What was that?" She narrowed her eyes, trying to track the shadow further with her gaze, but it had already disappeared.
Su Mo’s heart raced, and she turned and walked over to Ding Yan, "How long will it take to finish at the earliest?"
"Not that soon, it will be by evening."
Su Mo didn’t linger to chat; seeing that Lu Chen had already come down from the stand behind the wall, she descended the oil barrel stand and quickly walked towards him.
"Don’t wander off," Lu Chen pulled her to his side.
Su Mo nodded and then looked towards Li Qian, "Did you discover anything?"
Li Qian shook his head, "Nothing for now."
He hadn’t seen the creature, and Su Mo suppressed her emotions. Could she have been wrong?
Zhao Changsheng had set up a few chairs on the open ground, "Let’s just wait here for them to finish. We need to hurry back as soon as possible, Ling Ye, that brat, is still suffering."
Su Mo sat down on a chair, her words stirring worry for Ling Ye, "If he doesn’t recover in the next couple of days, we must find an origin body for him to consume."
An origin body is a product developed after zombies evolve through mutual devouring.
Very rare, and so far, Su Mo had only encountered two. Finding a new one was easier said than done.
They all understood that this was a significant problem.
The sun was now high overhead.
Su Mo suddenly felt a sense of foreboding, and she sharply turned to look at the residential dorms behind her, "Do you... feel something’s not right?"
