Chapter 326: Chapter 325: Return to the Refining Factory
Lu Chen placed an ordinary Crystal Stone into Ling Ye’s palm. "Try this."
Clutching the Crystal Stone, Ling Ye strangely found himself devoid of any desire to eat it. Still, seeing the worried faces around him, he slowly placed it into his mouth.
But it wasn’t long before he spat it back out, unchanged, still crying out from hunger.
Not just Su Mo, but everyone understood then—it had to be a Crystal Stone that only the original body possessed.
Otherwise, there were no other possibilities.
"Where can we find that kind of thing for him so suddenly?" Zhao Changsheng squatted beside the bed, looking at the Crystal Stone covered in glistening saliva on the small hand. "Even if we found one, we might not be able to kill it."
Su Mo’s eyes darkened. Zhao Changsheng was not wrong. The only one that had died was by Ling Ye’s own hand.
Just the few of them alone, it would be very difficult to obtain that kind of thing.
Li Qian looked at the sun rising higher outside. "It’s getting late. We need to go out today. With so many zombies outside, we might as well have a look."
By now, the folks over at Li Ming should all be waiting. They had to set off.
Ling Ye’s voice was very weak as he tugged at Su Mo’s hand. "Sister Su, you go ahead. I’m just feeling hungry, nothing else."
Su Mo had no choice but stand up and gently rub his head. "We will try to come back as soon as possible."
"I’ll take good care of him, so don’t worry," Jiang Yulian said with some affection for the half-grown child. After all, he had truly suffered a lot on the way here.
Lu Chen went to the dining table and brought several dishes to put on the table. "We won’t be back by noon, heat these up to eat."
After Jiang Yulian acknowledged this, she hugged the child and saw them out the door.
On their way, Su Mo felt a heavy weight on her heart, with one problem following another, and the fog growing ever denser.
Ahead, Li Ming had already been waiting at the tunnel’s entrance for quite a while. Unlike the smiling face that greeted them last night, today’s atmosphere was particularly somber.
Behind him, five armored vehicles were parked, with fifteen robust men.
Among them were Ding Yan and He Fei.
Seeing He Fei, Su Mo understood at once that the conflict had been resolved.
"You’re late," said Li Ming as he loaded bullets into his gun. He opened the car door and glanced at Lu Chen.
Lu Chen, unperturbed, replied, "We were delayed by something."
Li Ming nodded, not dwelling on the matter. He pointed to Ding Yan, signaling him to get into the vehicle. "The road to the Refining Factory might be troublesome this time."
Li Qian asked, "Because of the zombie horde?"
"City G turned into a zombie inferno overnight. Get on our vehicle," Li Ming didn’t elaborate, just said this and then sat down next to Ding Yan in the vehicle. On the side, He Fei greeted Lu Chen and the others before also getting in.
Su Mo exchanged a glance with Lu Chen, then followed Laoba, with whom they had a brief acquaintance, onto the vehicle.
Five people, with Laoba driving, fit perfectly into a single vehicle.
On top of the vehicle, there was a manually modified machine gun that someone could climb up to for firing.
The nearly half-meter-thick arched door was slowly pushed open by several superpower users with strength, revealing a pitch-black tunnel resembling the abyss of monsters.
The five armored vehicles drove out in turn.
The gate closed again, and the vehicles’ headlights switched on, illuminating the road ahead inside the tunnel.
Since getting on the vehicle, Laoba occasionally observed Su Mo through the rear-view mirror.
Su Mo, of course, noticed his gaze and took the initiative to ask him, "Is there something on your mind?"
"No," Laoba retracted his gaze, his thick, dark lips moved slightly, "I mistook you for my woman that day, I apologize."
Su Mo raised an eyebrow and also saw several shallow scars on his face left by blisters. She accepted his apology, "It’s fine, alcohol causes trouble, you should drink less of it."
"Of course," Laoba focused on driving the car, no longer engaging in conversation with her.
Once they were out of the tunnel, the snow outside had completely melted, revealing many zombie corpses on the damp ground, all of which had been slain and piled by the roadside by these people.
Li Qian sat in the co-driver’s seat, spreading his spiritual power outward like tentacles. He didn’t extend it to the maximum, but was scouting within a small range for potential dangers, because his intuition told him that the thing which had seriously injured his brain was not simple at all.
The route they took out was not the same as the one they had come by; there were many forks in the road.
Li Ming chose a street that had been hit by a meteorite.
The entire road was lined with houses and trees, all charred and shattered by the fire.
The blackened ruins and the bodies of carbonized corpses, whether lying down or toppled over, were all exposed after the snow, making it necessary for the car to roll over these brittle remains.
There was a dead silence between heaven and earth, only the sound of tires crushing over corpses brought numbness and despair.
The dozens of buildings destroyed by the meteorites now looked like mounds made up of massive piles of cement bricks and rubble, one after another, endless.
Why choose this road?
Su Mo thought, perhaps because the collapse of the buildings provided a better view of the surroundings, enabling them to spot zombie hordes in time.
They were lucky; no zombies were found on this stretch of the street.
The car ahead stopped, not far from the Refining Factory.
Originally, the place was surrounded by a horde of zombies. Although some were lured away, to prevent accidents, Li Ming chose to observe from a distance first.
He climbed up a four-story building that was only half left after the explosion, holding binoculars and looking towards the Refining Factory.
Su Mo and the others also got out of the car.
As she opened the car door, she stepped right onto a charred, delicate black hand, its fragility caused by carbonization, and the crackling sound of it breaking could be heard.
Su Mo looked down to see that beneath the car was a child’s body, curled like a dried shrimp, burned.
She frowned, withdrew her foot, feeling uncomfortable inside.
Zhao Changsheng also saw the body beneath and couldn’t help but sigh, "So tragic."
Lu Chen pulled Su Mo to his side and rubbed her head.
Su Mo bit her lip and sighed.
They had seen too many sad sights, but it was only the children that made Su Mo feel powerless—they were all so young, yet had to endure things they should never have had to bear.
Li Qian also climbed up the dilapidated building, observing the situation at the Refining Factory.
Vaguely seeing the factory gate broken, he frowned.
After coming down, Li Qian went straight up to the three of them, "The zombies are not very concentrated, but the earthen wall at the entrance has been breached. I can’t detect any major issues for now."
Su Mo: "We should stay there until nightfall, right? Refining oil is a lengthy process, but we could take away the reserves from the remaining fuel tanks."
"It depends on them; this trip is for their sake," Li Qian directed his gaze towards Li Ming, who was still observing from the rooftop.
After waiting a while longer, Li Ming came down from the rooftop, bent down to speak through the car window to Ding Yan about something, and then he summoned everyone back into the vehicle.
The car started again, heading straight for the Refining Factory.
