Chapter 316: Chapter 315: Mutant Da Bai
When the ground started showing obvious signs of shaking, he immediately said, "Turn around and pull out of this area now, turn around now!"
Everyone rushed back into the vehicles, and the war vehicle that turned around took the lead, retreating at high speed and swiftly driving down a new road with the two vehicles behind it.
The incident happened so suddenly that the students in the modified vehicle were still dazed, nearly getting thrown about by the sudden speed of the car. When they realized there was a group of zombies behind them, they all huddled together like a school of sardines in fright.
The speed of the vehicles was very fast, kicking up clouds of dust on the road.
Su Mo closed the window inside the iron mesh, watching Lu Chen sit back down, feeling somewhat nervous and puzzled, "Where did these hordes of zombies come from?"
"City B," Li Qian, whose towel was mostly stained red, looked like he had bled quite a bit.
Zhao Changsheng thought for a moment, reached out to touch his towel, and said uneasily, "Let me change it for a clean facecloth."
Li Qian looked at her softly, giving his silent consent.
"City B?" Su Mo stood up, turned around, and rested her hands on top of the seat, her knees on the chair, "That doesn’t make sense, didn’t they all head to the base?"
Li Qian swallowed the taste of blood in his mouth, said weakly, "City G is not a populous city, it’s mainly industrial, covering a broad area, it couldn’t possibly have such dense hordes of zombies."
"This brother is right," Guo Hua, who had been sitting on the ground smoking, joined the conversation, crushed out his cigarette, and stood up with his gun to look outside, "If it were a densely populated city, I wouldn’t dare walk around carrying a gun."
He paused and then said to the group of students, "They wouldn’t be this lucky to have saved so many people either."
"That being said, it doesn’t quite seem like the migration of zombies, they only head towards densely populated areas, which fits their bloodthirsty nature," Su Mo sat back down, puzzled.
Not just her, even the usually clever Li Qian and Lu Chen couldn’t see through the zombies’ behavior.
Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was tense.
The three vehicles sped around the streets.
They needed to put some distance between them within ten minutes, otherwise, the scythe of death could strike at their necks at any moment.
Ahead, a few barks of a dog were heard, and then the sound grew louder and closer.
Li Qian’s spiritual power had been severely injured, temporarily unusable; nonetheless, everyone heard those roars.
Su Mo took out her Tang Blade, only with it in her hand could she somewhat calm her nerves.
Lu Chen’s muscles under his clothes were already tensed up, ready to enter combat mode at any moment.
The lead vehicle, due to a dirty white Mutant Dog that sprang out from a side path on the right, swerved sharply to narrowly avoid it, followed immediately by a second and third which, following the lead of the white Mutant Dog, kept attacking the vehicle.
Except for that white dog that knew basic avoidance, the remaining ones only retreated, pushed hard, and with their split-open heads and sharp teeth, lunged at the windshield.
Su Mo realized they seemed to be only trying to delay time.
Lu Chen’s eyes fixated deadly on the white Mutant Dog, his gaze cold, his aura terrifying.
Su Mo, feeling the tense mood of the person beside her, followed his gaze to that Samoyed-like Mutant Dog, which grabbed her attention. She stammered, "Lu... Lu Chen, why does it look so much... like Da Bai."
She didn’t finish her sentence, for if it really was Da Bai mutated, it meant Hu Ding was also...
The man shifted his gaze away from the dog, struggling to compose himself.
Su Mo, feeling distressed, gently pulled his hand.
As more dogs joined, the lead vehicle began to falter, the heavy machine gun on its roof started to sweep the street.
"Tut tut tut," the dense gunfire resounded throughout the entire street corner.
"Tell them to stop shooting. The sound is too loud. If we head directly back to the epidemic prevention zone, the zombie horde will definitely follow," Su Mo urgently cautioned Li Ming.
The latter cursed under his breath, then grabbed the walkie-talkie and growled to the vehicle ahead, "Split into two groups. You guys draw the dogs in front and shake them off before regrouping."
The vehicle in front hesitated but chose to follow the instructions.
The vehicle swerved, enticing the dogs to sprint into another road. The filthy white Mutant Dog sniffed the air with a keen nose, and finally, splitting open its skull, it revealed its sharp fangs and continued to chase after the modified car.
"Why does it feel like it’s specifically coming for us?" the driver, who had been driving all along, couldn’t help but mutter.
"You fucking idiot, if zombies were that intelligent, you’d be dead already," Li Ming cursed at him, growing increasingly agitated. He sent a fireball hurling towards the dog that kept following right behind the car.
"It’s Da Bai," Lu Chen said with certainty.
Although he rarely visited Jiang Residence, he couldn’t mistake this dog that had grown up there.
"Could it be... the scent?" Su Mo suddenly suggested, though she herself found it hard to believe.
But after all, dogs’ most sensitive sense is their smell.
The idea that zombies used Mutant Dogs to hunt humans was too terrifying and unbelievable to express.
Su Mo thought for a moment, then patted Lu Chen’s arm and said, "Take out two pieces of clothing we’ve worn."
The man obeyed, retrieving a small cardigan and a tracksuit to hand to her.
Su Mo tossed the clothes to Li Ming, who looked puzzled as he took them, "What’s this for?"
"It looks like the dog my family raised. Throw them out and see," Su Mo said calmly.
"Your family raised a Mutant Dog?" Li Ming frowned, clearly skeptical, but due to Lu Chen’s presence, he still casually threw the clothes out of the co-pilot’s window.
The beige cardigan and the army green short-sleeve were swept up by the brisk wind.
Suddenly, a swift white figure leaped up, ignoring the fluttering short-sleeve, and grasped the cardigan with its split-open skull, placing it on the ground.
Su Mo looked back through the iron fence beside her, only able to see a glimpse of it circling around the clothes on the spot.
Li Ming, struck by the dog’s halt in the pursuit, was amazed, "It really is your family’s dog! Holy shit, is it chasing after its owner’s scent?"
Su Mo gave him a stern look and didn’t say a word.
Fortunately, without the dog’s nose to track them, they managed to evade the zombie horde’s pursuit.
Su Mo wasn’t relieved by their narrow escape; instead, the expressions of the entire group were solemn.
If it wasn’t a coincidence, then a startling truth lay before them.
The zombies, were coming for Su Mo.
Lu Chen unconsciously tightened his grip on Su Mo’s hand, a tremendous panic welling up inside him, causing his heart to beat irregularly.
Su Mo felt his tense muscles and unusual emotions and snuggled closer, whispering, "We still don’t know what’s going on, don’t worry."
Her closeness let him truly feel that she was still alright, right by his side.
The man lowered his gaze, his hand slightly relaxing as his thumb gently caressed the smooth, white back of her hand, lost in thought and silent.
