Chapter 315: Chapter 314: The Second Wave

Li Ming glanced at Li Qian and met his unfathomably dark pupils. Suddenly, he felt a prickling pain at the back of his neck, and a sense of crisis made him step back hastily. This man was also a Level 4 superpower user. Holding his neck, he chuckled and said, "Don’t be nervous, I’m a married man."

Choosing not to deliberately make his presence felt in front of them, Li Ming returned to the co-driver’s seat, watching the zombies that brushed past the window.

"I won’t smoke anymore," Lu Chen suddenly leaned over and whispered in Su Mo’s ear.

His breath on her earlobe sent a shiver down Su Mo’s spine. She pushed his arm and whispered back, "I know, sit properly."

The man sat up straight but covered the back of her hand with his own.

Su Mo looked out the window, her lips curving into a smile. They were currently passing through an abandoned industrial factory overrun with tall, wild grass, with some long-dead and withered farmland on both sides of the road.

The boundary area was always desolate and vast.

A few crows landed on a corpse lying in the middle of the road, their glossy black beaks incessantly picking at the rotting flesh on the body.

The lead armored vehicle showed no mercy as it crushed the body under its wheels, the crows hastily took flight, leaving behind a few feathers that got stuck to the window of the modified bus behind them.

Su Mo stared at the feathers and yawned. They had been on the road for an hour now and still hadn’t reached their destination.

No wonder this group only arrived here in the afternoon.

She leaned on Lu Chen’s shoulder, drifting off to sleep as the vehicle jostled about, the crisp sound of crushing bones beneath the tires echoing in her ears.

The inside of the vehicle was filled with snoring sounds, mostly from the ordinary students cramped at the back.

The sunlight above began to dip westward, elongating the shadows of the three vehicles speeding along the narrow path.

...

The small figure, leading a massive horde of zombies like a plague of locusts, was placed gently on the ground by a giant zombie.

The muscles on that zombie’s body swelled up rapidly as if inflated with air, and thick, dark purple veins bulged out; with just one punch of its single hand, it shattered a three-meter-high earthen wall.

The Refining Factory, now devoid of human presence, had nothing within it but a corpse that had long since died.

The smaller zombie couldn’t contain itself any longer. It let out an incensed roar to the sky, causing the surrounding horde to recoil in fear and submission.

It used the eyes of countless zombies to scour the city streets and, through the eyes of one zombie, spotted the rapidly fleeing vehicles on the road.

Once again lifted by the giant zombie, it rushed in their direction.

...

The vehicles entered the small town at the border, where the houses were a bit denser. It seemed like the zombies had been cleared out, and there were very few of them.

There were many roads, yet they weren’t spacious. The trees planted along the sides had not mutated but had long since died and turned black.

Just by passing through here, they could enter the boundaries of the epidemic prevention zone.

Just as they were progressing smoothly, the lead armored vehicle suddenly screeched to a halt.

Lu Chen promptly stopped Su Mo from lurching forward. She immediately snapped awake and, clutching the man’s arm that was blocking in front of her chest, asked, "What happened?"

"Not sure," he released her and stood up from his seat, looking coldly ahead.

Several people descended from the lead armored vehicle and walked to the front, seemingly discussing something. However, their view was mostly obstructed by the vehicle, so they couldn’t see clearly.

The door of the modified bus opened, and Li Ming jumped out to walk over.

"I’ll go down and take a look," Lu Chen got out of the vehicle, followed by Su Mo.

In front of the armored vehicle, the narrow path was haphazardly strewn with bodies wrapped in white cloth. Some, with blackened and severely decayed feet exposed, had their bones laid bare by crows feasting on them.

At first glance, the bodies were laid out on the road, creating a gruesome spectacle.

"Damn it, so unlucky, forgot there was a county hospital on this road," the leader in the armored vehicle spat on the ground and then looked towards Li Ming, fear evident in his eyes.

Li Ming tugged at the red scarf around his neck, sighed as he walked up to him, and then threw a punch straight to the man’s stomach, "Told you to take a shortcut, not a dead end, you’re wasting our time."

Su Mo saw that he did not hesitate to punch a teammate, and the man didn’t dare to retaliate but only endured the pain, leading her to believe that this Li Ming might hold an uncommon status in the epidemic prevention zone.

Lu Chen didn’t have the time to watch him discipline someone and spoke in a cold voice, "How are we going to get past?"

Li Ming shook his fist and looked at the expanse of bodies, "No choice, we must take a detour. The routes here are dense with many openings."

Someone beside him produced a map and spread it on the engine hood of the armored vehicle, marked with many symbols.

Lu Chen only glanced at it when Li Ming pressed down on most of the map, pointing at the modified vehicle, "You guys go wait in the car, it’s cold outside, we’ll be ready to leave soon."

Su Mo took a quick up and down glance at Li Ming, dressed as if it were summer, and couldn’t help but laugh. A scarf paired with a vest was indeed a strange combination.

Though it was only for a moment, Lu Chen had already quickly identified the precise locations of several major gaps.

He led Su Mo back towards their vehicle.

Li Qian sat inside the vehicle, resting with his eyes closed but suddenly felt a fluctuation in his spiritual power. He opened his eyes abruptly, his voice filled with surprise, "Weren’t the zombie hordes led away earlier this morning?"

Zhao Changsheng put down his crossed legs, his expression serious, "What did you say?"

"The horde, another massive wave," Li Qian got up from his seat, about to go find Lu Chen, but the two were already getting into the vehicle one after the other.

Noticing his clearly uneasy expression, Su Mo was the first to ask, "What’s wrong?"

"A large number of zombies are approaching from behind us, definitely no less than the number at the Refining Factory," Li Qian said, his emotions agitated like rarely before.

"How far away?" Lu Chen frowned, realizing the situation was troublesome.

"Less than 10 minutes," Li Qian said, and suddenly, he felt an acute, stabbing pain in his head. His body swayed, and he nearly collapsed backward.

Lu Chen caught him in time. Zhao Changsheng immediately stood up from his seat and crouched beside him, a rare urgency in his fox-like eyes, "What’s wrong?"

After Li Qian withdrew his spiritual power, blood began to trickle from his nose, and Lu Chen, seeing this, took a towel from Space and pressed it to his face.

Su Mo also looked worried and said, "Go sit in your seat, and tilt your head back."

Lu Chen helped him up and settled him into a chair. Both Ling Ye and Jiang Yulian looked on with concern.

Li Qian took a moment to ease his dizzying head, covered by the towel, and then spoke, "We’ve been spotted by a zombie with spiritual power."

"Higher than yours?!" Su Mo exclaimed in shock, "That must mean it has developed intelligence."

Lu Chen pursed his lips and immediately got out of the vehicle to negotiate with Li Ming, who was still outside.

His complexion visibly changed before one’s eyes.

When the ground began to noticeably shake, he immediately said, "Turn around and retreat from this area now, turn around immediately!"
