Chapter 300: Chapter 298: Interrogation

After everyone evacuated the school, the South Building exploded with a bang, and the entire structure collapsed.

Su Mo watched the huge dust cloud rise outside the window and remarked, "That bomb was really effective."

Lu Chen, "It’s used up."

"...Oh," Su Mo lowered her head, noting that Mu Rou’s chest was still faintly heaving with breath.

After pondering for a moment, she asked Lu Chen for a bottle of diluted Biluochun Tea and fed it to her directly by prying open her mouth.

"Momo, why are you saving her?" Zhao Changsheng still remembered that night, this woman with only half a face left had been covetously eyeing Lu Chen.

Seeing that the bleeding in her body and face had stopped but the wounds hadn’t changed much, Su Mo calmly said, "Those who would sacrifice their life to protect a comrade should not be blamed or left to die."

Zhao Changsheng, "Was it the one who was trying to get on the vehicle just now?"

Su Mo slightly curved her lips, "Yes."

"If you manage to save her... you’re so naughty," Zhao Changsheng suddenly remarked, and added at the end, "But I like it."

Everyone in the trunk, an adult and two children, laughed.

Indeed, it was the baby in Jiang Yulian’s arms who laughed.

Su Mo couldn’t help but laugh out loud too.

Lu Chen drove very slowly, following several of He Fei’s cars, because a large group of students was walking behind them, many of whom were injured.

They hadn’t walked for more than ten minutes when someone fell down.

The reason was none other than being bitten by a Level 2 Mutated Rat, which mutated very quickly.

To prevent others in the group from mutating and biting nearby comrades, He Fei, familiar with the area, drove to a supermarket they often visited for supplies to take a short break.

After stopping, Lu Chen put away the car, and Su Mo asked him for a towel to cover the injured half of Mu Rou’s face, then led the group into the supermarket, taking over the inner position on the second floor.

He Fei, Ding Yan, and two surviving female teachers were counting students on the first floor.

Guo Hua, who had disappeared during the rat killing, suddenly appeared; He Fei didn’t notice him, and he silently carried his rifle to the second floor.

Stepping onto the second floor, his eyes showed a hint of triumph.

This scene was caught precisely by Li Qian, who was standing by the window. He turned around leisurely and asked, "What’s making you so happy?"

Guo Hua’s expression stiffened, and his smile was instantly covered by sorrow, "What?"

"I have some questions I’d like to ask you," Li Qian approached him from the window, invisible threads surrounding him and capturing his limbs.

As an ordinary person, Guo Hua’s arms and legs were uncontrollable, and even his voice seemed seized by an invisible hand, rendering him unable to shout.

His eyes frantically moving around, he had no idea why this seemingly genteel man suddenly acted this way toward him.

He was restrained and knelt down in front of Su Mo and the others involuntarily. Li Qian stood behind him, his voice as mild and harmless as a warm spring morning, "We’ll ask the questions, and you’ll answer them, is that okay?"

An invisible thread climbed up Guo Hua’s neck, bringing a lethal threat amidst the mildness.

He felt the killing intent at the back of his neck, his eyes becoming terrified as he nodded frantically.

Su Mo raised an eyebrow and sat cross-legged next to Mu Rou, observing her injuries while asking Guo Hua, "Are you a member of the Refining Factory?"

Guo Hua’s throat loosened, and upon finding he could speak, he immediately trembled and said, "Yes."

She asked again, "Were the rats released by you?"

Guo Hua hesitated at this question, but as he felt a stabbing pain at the back of his neck, he recalled the scene of the rats exploding into a blood mist, his expression stiffened, and he blurted out, "That’s right."

"How did you manage to do that?" Su Mo became interested, stood up, approached Guo Hua, and squatted beside him, fidgeting with the Tang Blade in her hand and gently tracing it on Guo Hua’s face.

"I was afraid you’d get suspicious, so it took me over a day to dig through a sealed squatter toilet’s drainage," Guo Hua said, glancing fearfully at the blade on his chin.

"Why did you kill those ordinary students?" This was the question Su Mo really wanted to ask.

Guo Hua, kneeling on the ground, actually sighed in relief, "Fuel is scarce nowadays; we came early to negotiate with these students, offering quite favorable terms. I didn’t expect them to refuse. I only found out today that it was because of that woman who was raped to death."

"But she really did volunteer; I was there, and in exchange, we provided shelter, and that mother and daughter are indeed still alive in our epidemic prevention zone," Guo Hua said, becoming somewhat speechless, he couldn’t believe that even in such apocalyptic times, some people could still be so overwhelmingly righteous.

Zhao Changsheng gave him a somewhat off-point look up and down, puzzled, "You’re still usable? You look about sixty."

Guo Hua’s face instantly turned red, and he barely managed to get out, "Old but sharp."

Li Qian, somewhat helpless, steered the conversation back, "It’s quite normal for young students to feel a sense of justice."

"But that’s no reason to kill other people," Jiang Yulian, who was holding a child, couldn’t help but speak up, with Ling Ye beside her showing some agreement in his little expression.

Guo Hua paused for a moment, as if making a desperate decision, "The negotiation failed, and without fuel, we couldn’t travel far to find supplies, so we had no choice but to resort to robbery,

I have no superpower; these students couldn’t detect my anomaly, so I was assigned here to figure out a way to get the oil pump keys from the Refining Factory or to thin out the population while waiting for them to take us in."

"Thin out the population?" Su Mo’s hand slipped, slashing a gash across his wrinkled face.

Feeling the sting on his face and the rolling drops of blood, Guo Hua trembled, "Yes, I originally planned to kill He Fei, but unfortunately, I failed."

The reason for his failure was that Su Mo had intercepted the lethal blow.

Seeing no other option, Guo Hua decided to come clean for his own life, "If we had managed to kill He Fei and taken in everyone, supplies would have been extremely scarce. Our population in the epidemic prevention zone is large and there’s not much work needing so many students,

The best course of action was to kill He Fei while also thinning out half of the students. Without their leader and with the misunderstanding resolved, we could seamlessly take over the Refining Factory and sustain these surviving students, letting them work for compensation."

Su Mo also largely understood the cause and effect now; simply put, there was a potential cooperation between the two sides because of the oil factory, but it was thwarted by He Fei’s sense of justice and a woman who had been raped by her own volition.

In Su Mo’s view, it was actually quite ludicrous.

Zhao Changsheng again couldn’t hold back and blurted out, "I’m quite impressed that you could dig a hole in such a stinky toilet."

She seemed to always think differently from others; Su Mo laughed.

After she had asked all her questions, Lu Chen squatted in front of Guo Hua and said without expression, "Is there someone guarding the borders at G City?"

"Yes, all of our roads leading to the interior of G City are manned by our people because of the scarcity of materials; we don’t allow anyone on our land to gather resources. The Refining Factory will be open, and it’s only a matter of time before the people from the epidemic prevention zone attack. In my view, young people, we might as well cooperate. Your strength is so formidable, and your status in the epidemic prevention zone is supreme,"

Guo Hua started using his wits, extending an olive branch to them.
