Chapter 296: Chapter 294: The Eve
Su Mo patted Lu Chen’s shoulder, "What’s your take on this?"
A map of the country appeared out of nowhere in the man’s hand, which he spread out on the table, his finger landing on the location of G City, "The epidemic prevention zone, here?"
He circled an area on the border with his fingertip.
Guo Hua propped up half his body to look and then nodded, "That should be it."
Su Mo also spotted the issue, her gaze shifting between the Western Region and the epidemic prevention zone, and she realized it was probably better to accept the task concerning the Refining Factory first.
To reach the Western Region, they would need to pass through G City, and if they took a detour back, they were very likely to encounter a horde of zombies.
Passing through G City meant, no matter what, they would have to break into the territory of the epidemic prevention zone.
And the man before her might just know a breakthrough point in the epidemic prevention zone, Su Mo thought as she looked toward Guo Hua.
"We agree to help you relocate," Lu Chen spoke up.
Aside from a woman and child, his team consisted of strong superpower users whose Superpower Levels were not weak, and He Fei and Ding Yan were of course pleased, as this added another layer of security to their relocation.
Guo Hua, who had been sitting there, knew very well that they couldn’t afford to anger He Fei in their current situation, so he took the initiative and said, "I’ll join too, then if there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave."
He put on his hat, stood up, picked up his rifle leaning against the chair, and walked out.
Su Mo watched his departing figure and asked softly, "Why did you let him join?"
"He said he used to be a hunter, and we’ve confirmed his marksmanship is very accurate," He Fei said.
Su Mo nodded, the rifle indeed served as good proof of this.
Lu Chen asked, "When do we set out?"
"After the snow melts," Ding Yan said: "We still have a few students who have just gotten over their fever, and considering today’s scare, I think we’ll rest for a few days."
Their plan matched what they had anticipated, so Lu Chen stood and agreed, "Okay."
Upon leaving the office, Ling Ye tugged at Su Mo’s sleeve, "Sister Su, are we leaving again?"
Su Mo looked down and pinched his face, "Yes, there’s nowhere safe for us to settle down here."
He obediently nodded, "Okay."
For some reason, Su Mo heard a hint of anticipation in those two words.
Back at their tent side, several people sat outside.
Li Qian adjusted the glasses on the bridge of his nose and was the first to speak, "That man is a problem."
His gaze was directed at Guo Hua who was sitting not far from them.
Su Mo bent her knee and propped her chin on it, "I see that, but why is he always leading these students to the epidemic prevention zone? Is it because of that Refining Factory?"
"He’s from the epidemic prevention zone," Lu Chen said coldly.
Zhao Changsheng added, "I think so too."
Jiang Yulian couldn’t quite grasp all the intricacies but simply remarked, "With so many students, you all need to be careful."
Listening to the noise from downstairs, Su Mo thought it over carefully and felt something was off, "If it’s just for the Refining Factory and taking in so many students, I don’t think the deal is worth it,
after all, these are people without Combat Power and the numbers are huge, the supplies they go out to find by car wouldn’t even be enough to feed these students for a few days, right?"
"Not bad," Lu Chen expressed his agreement.
Li Qian spoke softly, "We’re not clear about what for the moment, let’s just head to the Refining Factory first; they’ll come knocking sooner or later."
Without dwelling on the matter, the group just sat there quietly, chatting idly about other topics.
Guo Hua, who had been sitting not far away, stood up, asked a student nearby where the restroom was, had a plastic bottle stuffed into his hand, and was instructed not to pee outside.
After acknowledging, he went to the restroom on the second floor with his gun on his back.
A dozen separate stalls, all reeking, were filled with plastic bottles of urine.
He closed the door, looked around, and opened each stall to inspect the squat toilets. Finally, in the innermost stall, he muttered softly, "These people are quick to react, blocking every hole; no wonder nothing bad has happened for so long."
The holes were the sewer pipes filled with rats.
They had been filled by superpower users with soil and metal materials.
He tried prodding within the pipe with his gun, "It would take quite a while to puncture this through."
Muttering to himself, frightened of staying too long and attracting attention, he only cleaned out a small portion of soil from the drainpipe before coming out, then he patted his pants, closed the stall door, and left.
These past two days, Li Qian had been constantly watching Guo Hua but saw nothing unusual; besides going to the restroom, he just lay on his blanket doing nothing.
Downstairs, the students were becoming more lively by the day.
Because just yesterday, Ding Yan and a few teachers announced to the students that they would be moving to the Refining Factory, and He Fei presided, mentioning that the residential area near the enclosure showed signs of a zombie outbreak and the threat of Mutant Rats potentially bursting through pipes at any moment.
Initially, some students weren’t willing to leave since dangers lurked everywhere outside, they, with no ability to defend themselves, could easily die on the mere two-hour journey.
But, for the first time, He Fei used force on these people.
If they didn’t go along, they would no longer be protected.
Without the shelter of superpower users, the consequences were well understood by everyone.
No one dared to raise objections anymore.
The coldest of the snow days had passed, the temperature had warmed up, and the indoor temperature stabilized at around 0°C; there was no need to build fires inside anymore, and the snow outside had melted up to knee level, making it possible to shovel a path for everyone to walk on.
Today, the students were packing their luggage, ready to depart for the Refining Factory early the next morning.
Guo Hua had been waiting for two days on the second floor, hardly able to sleep comfortably, yet the Mutant Rats he was expecting to emerge from the pipe he had opened hadn’t shown up.
He couldn’t help but grow impatient.
At night, everyone went to sleep with a mix of excitement and apprehension.
Guo Hua carefully stood up, told the student on night watch he was going to the restroom, and then slipped into the restroom.
At the hole he had dug through, it was pitch black, silent.
After waiting roughly a minute, he rolled up his sleeve, picked up a piece of broken tile fallen on the floor, and carefully made a small cut. As the blood flowed out, he immediately held his arm above the mouth of the pipe, letting a few drops fall, then quickly lowered his sleeve and walked out with a normal expression, lying back down under his blanket.
Su Mo, who had fallen asleep, suddenly opened her eyes, sat up clutching her chest, and gasped for breath.
Lu Chen, awoken by her movements, sat up as well and placed a hand on her face, concern evident in his eyes, "Why do you look so pale?"
"Don’t sleep, something’s happened."
Su Mo rubbed her chest, feeling extremely uncomfortable from the heart palpitations. She immediately got out of bed and started organizing things inside the tent, speaking hurriedly, "Go notify Li Qian and them as well as Ding Yan to wake the students up."
