The Chef Rules the Last Days -
Chapter 293 - 291: Missing
Chapter 293: Chapter 291: Missing
She remembered, when they first entered the campus, that the gun was aimed to kill them, otherwise she wouldn’t have felt the sense of crisis.
With the aura of slaughter that man emitted last night, it seemed like he had been struggling in a world overrun by zombies for quite a while.
What was the reason that made him target the campus?
Merely for shelter? That didn’t make sense, but for supplies, that seemed a bit more plausible.
Outside the neighboring tent, the sound of Jiang Yulian and Ding Yan conversing rang out, and Su Mo withdrew her thoughts, listening intently.
It turned out that after a night of resistance, among the several superpower users who were seriously injured, only one had died, the Spiritual Superpower User.
Although it was heartbreaking, this was already a very good outcome. Ding Yan had specifically come to bring Jiang Yulian cans of milk powder, knowing that with their Space superpower they lacked nothing but milk powder, which served as a form of repayment.
Lu Chen, with his eyes half-closed, asked in a hoarse voice, "What are you doing?"
Su Mo looked up, "You’re awake."
"Mhm," he pinched his brow and sat up, propping himself up with the sheets. Su Mo followed suit, got dressed, and both walked out after drawing the curtains.
After a quick wash, the snow outside had already stopped.
Downstairs, there was a noisy commotion, mostly of joyful shouting.
The temperature inside began to rise.
Lu Chen went to check on He Fei’s injury and after saying it was nothing serious, he took Su Mo’s hand and was about to leave but was stopped by He Fei’s words,
"Are the two of you, husband and wife?"
He asked this question, Su Mo turned her head first and nodded without hesitation, replying confidently, "Yes."
He Fei had already sensed the faint chill emanating from Lu Chen, he forced a smile with his pale face, "Don’t get me wrong, I just wanted to say, you two really are a good match."
Su Mo smiled, "Thank you."
The chill around Lu Chen thawed, and his mood seemed to be quite good as well.
Finally, Jiang Yulian was willing to come out of the tent with her child in her arms, and she also carried two cans of milk powder for Lu Chen to keep first.
Li Qian’s advancement was not yet complete; his progression from Level 3 to Level 4 was, like Su Mo’s, unusually long.
A group of people descended the stairs and noticed several teachers were, unusually, busily preparing lunch for everyone.
Seeing them arrive, Ding Yan hastily arranged seats for them.
Because of Lu Chen’s outburst the day before, these students all kept a distance from them, fear still visible on their faces.
"You’ve come just at the right time; we made some noodles with flour for lunch, come and join us," Ding Yan invited warmly.
Zhao Changsheng asked, "Isn’t it just one meal a day?"
Ding Yan glanced at her, his gaze swept across the crowd of students, then leaned in close to them and spoke in a low voice, "Our superpower users need to replenish their nutrients, but we must maintain fairness among the students, so it’s one bowl each."
"Fairness now?" Zhao Changsheng’s tone was somewhat exaggerated.
Su Mo gave her a warning look, and she fell silent.
"Thank you," Su Mo took the initiative to express gratitude to Ding Yan, "And for the milk powder too."
He waved his hand dismissively and walked away.
"Momo, why did you stop me from speaking?" Zhao Changsheng still felt slightly wronged.
Su Mo looked towards the students who were chatting lightheartedly amongst themselves and said softly, "They’ve always done it this way; speaking out would only make others think you’re selfish and cause unnecessary displeasure."
In the apocalypse, minding one’s own business was the right choice.
Ling Ye nodded in agreement like a little adult, and Zhao Changsheng didn’t say anything more.
Su Mo looked at the thermometer on the pillar on the first floor. The indoor temperature had climbed to -5 degrees Celsius, a dramatic leap overnight.
"The snow will probably melt soon. When shall we set out?" she asked Lu Chen.
The man glanced at the still-thick snow outside and said, "Wait two more days."
The noodles were ready, and several teachers were the first to carry up several large bowls full of them, followed by the students.
They lined up for their share of noodles, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. To them, a bowl of noodles made from flour was a luxury in these straits.
"Teacher Ding, Peng Xin seems to be missing!" A student holding a bowl suddenly stood in front of Ding Yan, his expression frantic.
Ding Yan immediately found someone to replace him in serving noodles and pulled the student aside. "What did you say? Have you looked everywhere?"
"Yes, I checked every corner, upstairs and down. He’s not here."
"I haven’t seen him since last night."
Ding Yan puffed out his beard and glared angrily. "Why didn’t you say so earlier! Come on, let’s get a few others and look again."
Su Mo received her noodles only to see Ding Yan hurriedly leaving with a group of students. She didn’t miss their conversation.
Back at her seat, she played with the noodles in her bowl, which included some chunks of canned meat, a little salty taste, and oil. She had barely eaten a few bites before pushing the bowl toward Lu Chen, "I’m full."
The man insisted, "Eat a little more."
Su Mo pouted and picked up her chopsticks to eat a few more bites, but the noodles were tasteless—the precious salt and oil were sparingly used.
If possible, she would have liked to cook them a big pot of rice.
Around her, the sounds of slurping noodles filled the air.
On one side, Jiang Yulian, holding her child, also ate uncomfortably, but she finished without complaint.
Ding Yan led the students from the second floor down to the first, still without seeing a trace of Peng Xin.
He stood among the students and shouted, "Where did you last see Peng Xin? Does anyone know?"
There were whispers all around, with a few students claiming they last saw him inside the venue.
Had he simply vanished into thin air?
That was obviously not possible. Su Mo took the opportunity to put down her chopsticks and pass the bowl to Lu Chen, whispering, "Without a Spiritual Superpower User, we really are like blind people, unable to find anyone."
Li Qian was still advancing, and the only Spiritual Ability User in the gym had died that morning.
The man glanced at her and accepted her bowl of noodles, calmly finishing it off.
Next to them, Zhao Changsheng put down his chopsticks and wiped his mouth. "The place is only so big; could the guy have sneaked out last night and frozen to death?"
Su Mo shook her head. "That’s impossible."
At that moment, several students whispered among themselves and then stood up. "When we went to the bathroom yesterday, we found that one of the doors on the first floor was locked. Is it possible..."
Ding Yan immediately led people to the bathroom, his face showing a hint of disbelief. "Why would he lock himself in the bathroom for no reason?"
Hearing them depart, Su Mo glanced out the window, noticing a figure walking through the snow.
"Lu Chen," she tugged at Lu Chen’s sleeve.
The man turned and, seeing the figure outside, spoke softly, "Are you all finished eating?"
"Yes," Su Mo nodded, looking at the three who had already put down their chopsticks.
Lu Chen stood up and patted off his trousers. "Let’s go upstairs."
It seemed he didn’t plan on getting too involved with that person. Following his lead, Su Mo took Ling Ye by the hand and stood up.
