Chapter 286: Chapter 284: Leaving the Nest

Leaning on the banister at the stairwell entrance, Li Qian spoke, "No abnormalities, just a few little mice, but I can’t detect the exact number. Like the cockroach swarm, they’ve evolved to shield against spiritual power."

"So, there is a problem with this building," Su Mo said as she stepped onto the staircase, listening to the noises of things being moved upstairs.

"It’s about time. Let’s go up and call them down," Lu Chen announced as the cold air swirled around him.

At that moment, He Fei was moving useable blankets and mattresses to the stairwell entrance from the top floor.

A startlingly loud scream erupted from a dorm room.

The sound echoed throughout the dormitory building.

In the corridor, where the undead were standing, a few mechanically turned their heads from side to side, their pale eyes slowly starting to move.

The people who were walking upstairs heard the noise and hurriedly went up.

On the top floor, in a dormitory bathroom, countless gigantic rats surged out of the squat toilet’s pipe.

A superpower user collecting blankets was attracted by the noise in the bathroom. As soon as he opened the door, he was instantly overrun by countless rats, which submerged his body.

"Help! No! Ugh..."

When He Fei arrived, all he saw was his companion, gnawed to pieces, with only a few scraps of flesh hanging on the bones.

"No!"

A surge of anger rose in his chest, and he kept slashing at the rats with his Wind Blade as if it didn’t cost him any superpower.

Niu Mang, who was collecting things on the fifth floor, got there first. Taking advantage of the fact that the swarm hadn’t rushed out yet, he quickly pulled He Fei out and shut the dormitory door; the rats incessantly scratched at the door panel, making a piercing noise.

Now there were only nine of them left.

As they passed the fifth floor, Lu Chen also collected the items stacked at the staircase entrance.

As soon as Su Mo arrived, she heard the unusual noise inside that door.

He Fei pushed Niu Mang away and squatted down at the door, clutching his head. His face showed guilt, fear, anger, and all the emotions intertwined, distorting his face so severely that veins even popped on his forehead.

Nothing could make him more distraught than witnessing his companion being devoured completely before his very eyes.

Lu Chen put away the items at the stairwell entrance into Space and said, "That’s about enough, let’s go."

Immense sorrow enveloped the remaining students. He Fei, propped up by Niu Mang, stood up. A girl with a neat ponytail, with red eyes, comforted him, "He Fei, there are still many people waiting for us at the gymnasium."

Despite his foolish-sounding name, Niu Mang was somewhat clever. Spoken angrily, "Mu Rou’s right; those rats must have climbed up from the sewer. That’s the only way they could survive."

An idea suddenly connected in Li Qian’s mind. "Did you say they came out of the pipes?"

He suddenly looked towards Niu Mang.

The one to respond was He Fei, his head half-drooped, choking up, "I saw them coming out of the toilet, loads of them."

The expression on Li Qian’s face suddenly turned grave.

Zhao Changsheng nudged his arm with his elbow, "What’s with that look? Are you feverish too?"

He turned his head, his eyes sharp behind his glasses, "When we passed by the barrier, I saw a half-moved manhole cover below. It leads to a sewer pipe."

As soon as he said this, the crowd burst into whispers. This seemed to explain how the barrier had been destroyed.

This overlooked detail made everyone panic.

"Our school’s water pipe system is interconnected," the ponytail girl named Mu Rou uttered in shock.

He Fei immediately realized the severity of the situation and, no longer able to concern himself with grief, stumbled forward, "There’s no time to lose, let’s go!"

A line of people rushed downstairs.

Meanwhile, the door Niu Mang had shut was violently breached by a swarm of rats.

The dense horde of rats poured down the staircase, their pairs of red eyes exceptionally conspicuous in the dimly lit corridor.

Accompanying them was the intense squeaking of the rodents.

"Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!" He Fei shouted loudly, leading his companions as they continued to run down.

Many rats fell through the gaps in the stairway, some landing on the steps, others crashing down to the first floor and turning into mush.

Su Mo, wielding her Tang Blade, kept slicing at the rats falling at her feet, all the while shouting a warning, "Don’t get bitten!"

Fortunately, due to the low temperatures of the snowy weather, their legs were tightly wrapped, preventing, for the moment, the rats’ teeth from piercing their skin.

When they reached the third floor, Lu Chen was at the front. Looking down through the gap in the stairwell, he grabbed Su Mo and interrupted her pace, "Go out the window."

"What!?" Su Mo hadn’t had the chance to look down before he pulled her by the hand, running into the immobile horde of zombies on the third floor.

Seeing the floor crawling with rats, Li Qian didn’t hesitate, grabbing Zhao Changsheng’s arm and pulling her along to follow Lu Chen.

Noticing the commotion below, He Fei quickly led the others to rush over.

The noise made by the people and the rats aroused some of the zombies between the floors, who began to stir.

Mu Rou panicked when a zombie suddenly grabbed her braid with its claw, yelling, "Help!"

Su Mo immediately turned to look. The zombie was about to bite into the girl’s neck. She hurriedly called out, "Lu Chen! Ice Blade!"

The man looked back, and the Ice Blade in his hand shot out quickly, striking the zombie’s head with a clean hit.

The girl who had escaped death was picked up and carried forward by He Fei, who had rushed back.

More and more zombies around them began to move.

Su Mo swung her Tang Blade, cleaving open the head of a nearby zombie. Behind her, a gust of Wind Blade arrived. Lu Chen, fully unleashing his power, scooped her waist and held her, sidestepping to avoid; the sharp and extraordinarily fast claw struck the swiftly formed Ice Shield behind them.

It was a female zombie without eyes. Seeing her claw blocked, she chose not to continue attacking and quickly submerged back into the horde, disappearing from sight.

Su Mo caught this scene and looked horrified, "Impossible!"

The two of them were the first to reach the window, followed by Li Qian and Zhao Changsheng, with a not insignificant distance to the ground below.

Niu Mang and several companions brought up the rear.

After putting down the girl, He Fei immediately turned back to help the teammates trapped in the zombie throng.

Lu Chen shattered the frozen plastic window, and Mu Rou, having narrowly escaped death, released vines that wrapped around the railing below the window.

On the other end, the vines rapidly grew downwards.

Mu Rou shouted, "We can go now!"

However, it seemed as if all the zombies on the third floor were beginning to awaken.

Niu Mang and his group were trapped.

Su Mo turned to Lu Chen, "We need to help, it won’t do if all 10 people die."

"Follow me. Don’t get hurt," Lu Chen declared, his body surrounded by numerous Crystals, his superpower appearing to operate especially smoothly due to the weather.

Su Mo nodded, clutching her Tang Blade, then spoke to Li Qian, "Look around this floor, see if there is a female zombie that is particularly unusual. I just noticed it might have intelligence."
