Chapter 283: Chapter 281: Fuzzy
He had planned to greet her, but his gaze shrank back as soon as it fell on the tall man standing next to the petite girl, and he left with his group.
The girls who had been playing with the child saw them returning and reluctantly walked away.
Ling Ye finally got his face back, looking slightly sour-faced.
Su Mo pulled Lu Chen down to sit and Zhao Changsheng immediately leaned in to complain, "These students are so annoying, I almost lost control of my fist."
Su Mo patted her on the shoulder, comforting her, "We are still on their turf, just bear with it, it’ll be better after the heavy snow."
Zhao Changsheng silently sat back into the quilt, and Li Qian sat down close to her, to which she slightly annoyed asked, "Why are you sitting so close?"
"There’s just this much space, no need to be so particular, right?" Li Qian turned his head, his voice gentle.
Zhao Changsheng didn’t retort but turned her head and stared at Su Mo’s profile.
Inside the gymnasium, there were many people downstairs and the noise was loud, occasionally reaching the second floor.
Su Mo hooked her arm around Lu Chen’s, scooting closer to him, "Lu Chen, did you also attend university at A University before?"
"I never went to school."
Su Mo curiously turned her head towards him, "Then how come you know lip reading and have medical knowledge?"
"Personal teacher."
Those simple four words made Su Mo feel inferior; Lu Chen met her gaze of shock, his eyes twinkling with laughter.
The sky outside gradually dimmed.
The temperature inside seemed to have dropped again.
Due to the huge difference between inside and outside temperatures, a layer of water droplets formed on the walls and floor.
The first floor was very lively, many superpower user students from the second floor had gone down.
He Fei also came over to invite them, "It’s evening, we’ve made a fire downstairs and are cooking, come down and eat something."
Other than Jiang Yulian, who was concerned that the crowd might affect the children and didn’t go down, the rest followed him downstairs.
Before leaving, He Fei thoughtfully instructed a student to bring up some food for Jiang Yulian later.
On the first floor, the plastic grass in the center of the track was manually cleared away in two large chunks, two fires about one and a half meters high blazed fiercely, beside which were placed lots of wood brought back from the canteen, people occasionally adding more to the flames, bringing a hint of warmth to the freezing regular students indoors.
There were many people, split into two groups huddled around the fire pits wrapped in quilts sitting together for warmth.
Su Mo and her group were brought into one of the circles by He Fei.
In the center, two teachers were making food, Su Mo glanced over, it was a blend of canned luncheon meat and flour.
It didn’t look very appealing.
However, seeing most students looking thin and haggard with their eager eyes, Su Mo thought that perhaps this was already quite a lavish meal.
After all, feeding over three hundred students was no trivial matter.
She cast her gaze again towards He Fei, who was now seated among the crowd speaking, her eyes filled with some admiration.
However, before she could watch for a few seconds, the man sitting next to her twisted her chin back with his fingers, his eyes revealing his displeasure, his handsome brows sharp, "What are you looking at?"
Su Mo touched his hand and said with a giggle, "I think these superpower users are quite amazing, sustaining over three hundred people by themselves."
Lu Chen’s grip loosened, and his fingers pinched her face instead, his facial lines softened, "Indeed."
Such spirit, if placed before the apocalypse, would indeed be praiseworthy.
In the circle, Ding Yan had finished cooking the large pot of food, but he didn’t hurry to distribute it. Instead, he stood solemnly in the middle and announced loudly, "Today, we lost two students. Before we eat, I hope everyone will observe a three-minute silence for them."
Su Mo remembered the two gunshots that morning; it must have been about them.
For no reason, she felt it was rather regrettable for these student superpower users. If they had abandoned their teachers and classmates, they might have lived better lives. Yet some people were just so selflessly devoted and great. Conscientially, Su Mo herself couldn’t do that.
From within the crowd, some low sobbing sounds arose.
Clearly, most of the people here had a good relationship with the two who had passed away.
After the moment of silence, everyone went up in turn to collect their share.
Su Mo also took out a few bowls, distributing them. When it was their turn, the confused teacher even filled their bowls to the brim.
Although there were pieces of meat can from the can in it, the taste was very bland when eaten.
Su Mo ate about half a bowl, but her picky stomach really couldn’t handle any more. Lu Chen, sitting beside her, managed to eat his without a change in expression.
She pushed her bowl towards Lu Chen, "I can’t eat anymore."
The man gave her a glance and took over the bowl with some helplessness in his eyes, "You’re very skinny."
Su Mo’s first reaction was to cover her chest, leaning toward him and huffing, "You think I’m too small!"
"What are you thinking about?" He flicked her forehead and tapped on her collarbone.
Turns out, he was saying she was thin overall—Su Mo then felt more at ease and muttered softly while hugging his arm, "With such intense daily activities, it would be hard for me to gain weight."
The man slightly raised his eyebrows, finished his porridge with one hand, and then tousled her hair.
Zhao Changsheng finished the gruel and smacked his lips, "Still, Momo’s cooking is tastier."
Ling Ye and Li Qian also nodded deeply in agreement.
After the meal, a teacher brought out a few buckets of milk powder. A Water Element Superpower User stepped forward to gather water and boil it, and everyone received a cup of very mild milk powder.
Zhao Changsheng, holding a disposable paper cup, expressed, "I wondered why the baby stores were out of milk; turns out it was all collected here."
Su Mo smiled, "This is good stuff, don’t waste it."
Though the flavor of the milk powder was mild, drinking it in such an extremely cold winter night was still very comforting.
Li Qian looked toward the left pillar of the gymnasium and suddenly said, "The temperature inside is now -5℃."
Su Mo followed his gaze and saw the thermometer hanging on the pillar; indeed, the mercury scale had dropped to the -5 mark.
"That’s even with a fire burning," Su Mo muttered, "Without enough firewood and warming blankets, ordinary people would sooner or later freeze to death."
Unlike superpower users with robust physiques, the fragile condition of ordinary people’s bodies makes them more prone to issues first.
"It’s not just the threat of zombies; the effects brought by extreme harsh environments are enough to significantly reduce the human population," Ding Yan had approached them at some point, wrapped in a blanket and sat cross-legged next to Li Qian.
With such a heavy and oppressive topic, Su Mo didn’t respond but just tightened her grip on Lu Chen’s hand.
"Come to the office later; let’s discuss the situation of the living area together," Ding Yan said to them. He then waved He Fei over, "He’s one of my students with the most leadership qualities."
Li Qian watched He Fei approaching, his demeanor a mix of righteousness and the fierce air of someone who had scrambled through the apocalypse, and he warmly said, "Indeed, he is."
