The Chef Rules the Last Days -
Chapter 281 - 279: Gymnasium
Chapter 281: Chapter 279: Gymnasium
He Fei’s expression wasn’t as exaggerated as it had been the day before.
They were whispering behind his back.
"It’s my first time seeing a living baby."
"No wonder the gatekeeper said they were powerful."
"Shh, keep your voice down."
"..."
Su Mo heard every word of their conversation clearly; she tightened her clothes and silently walked beside Lu Chen.
The group descended the stairs and came out of the south building’s back door, where the snow depth shocked them.
Just overnight, the snow had reached knee-deep, and the snowflakes falling from the sky were large and fierce.
As usual, Lu Chen carried Jiang Yulian on his back, while the extremely low temperatures made the child Su Mo was holding in her arms shiver; Ling Ye wasn’t very tall and Li Qian also carried him on his back.
The group stepped into the snowfield.
They needed to go straight through the canteen to reach the gymnasium where the surviving students were located; a journey that would normally take ten minutes now became difficult due to the heavy and deep snow.
Su Mo and the others were somewhat better off; they wore warm shoes and had drunk Beef Soup, with coats that protected them against most of the cold.
Occasionally Lu Chen would ask Su Mo if she was cold, and seeing her shake her head, he wouldn’t ask further.
The returning students beside them were mostly dressed in layer upon layer, their faces purple from the cold.
The condition of the injured student who was carried lucky enough to survive was not very good either.
Even though a Fire Ability User had used their superpower to melt a small section of the road ahead, it quickly turned into an icy surface that made it slippery to walk.
"With this weather, if it doesn’t recover in a short time, we will freeze to death sooner or later," a student complained from behind.
But, it wasn’t without reason.
After all, the weather was abnormal and no one knew how long the snow would last.
About five minutes later,
people behind Su Mo already found their legs so frozen they could barely step forward, so they had to stop in the canteen for a rest.
Several students were already trapped there. Seeing He Fei and the others, they hurried over with anxious faces, "He Fei, the snow is too heavy, we don’t know when it will stop, we need to move the food back first."
He Fei’s face turned serious, and he said, "I know, we’ll dress warmer and make a trip later to move the stuff to the gymnasium first."
"Okay."
"Ah, it hurts," hissed a girl whose leg had issues. She was only wearing a thin pair of pants, and as she sat on a chair in the canteen, He Fei rolled up her pant leg to reveal purplish-red skin. Her entire calf looked frightening.
Lu Chen set down Jiang Yulian and glanced at the frostbite, his voice cold, "If you don’t want your leg to be ruined, use some fire to warm water for her to soak in."
Once Jiang Yulian was on the ground, she went over to take the child from Su Mo’s arms to check his condition.
He Fei immediately called a companion to warm water in the canteen’s kitchen.
Li Qian thought for a moment and gently suggested, "Why don’t you take apart the wooden tables in the canteen to stand on for the way back?"
His idea caused everyone to look at the tables inside the canteen. They were dressed too thinly, and the outdoor temperature was unbearably cold.
Su Mo agreed, "Right, if the temperature continues to drop, the wood can also be used for you to start a fire to stay warm."
At her words, the students’ eyes lit up with excitement.
"Good idea," He Fei commended Su Mo, and for some reason she seemed even prettier than yesterday. His gaze lingered a moment before returning to the injured girl’s leg.
Lu Chen keenly sensed his abnormality; a man’s intuition about another man is always uncannily accurate.
His expression cooled, and without a sound, he drew Su Mo closer, his hand resting on her shoulder.
Su Mo looked up, her hand wiping away the droplets of water on his face, "What’s wrong?"
"Are you cold?" he asked, lowering his head, gazing at her.
Su Mo shook her head, her lips spreading into a smile.
Their intimate interaction was witnessed by everyone, accompanied by a few amorous glances.
He Fei felt the penetrating coldness emanating from Lu Chen, and a subtle oppressive air. He didn’t look back, placing the warm water his companion brought at the feet of the girl with frostbite to wash them.
With the soaking of warm water, the girl’s feet improved a lot, but they were still swollen from the freezing.
A boy volunteered to carry her, and Su Mo caught the worry in his eyes, along with a hint of flirtatiousness.
All of a sudden, she thought of the discordant sounds from the night before heard through the wall, and suddenly, everything clicked.
He Fei didn’t interfere further; he stood up and walked to one of the wooden tables arranged in the cafeteria, "Everyone, please help to take apart the tables. Carry the dismantled table corners on your back, and let’s bring a portion back first."
The crowd dispersed to execute the plan.
The Power Superpower Users were responsible for breaking off the table corners, while the others packed up the wood.
Afterward, several detabled tables were placed on the snowy ground.
The group trudged over several wooden boards, taking turns walking to the entrance of the gym.
Su Mo raised her head for a glance at the gym, which was two stories high. Standing at the entrance, they could see through the transparent tempered glass doors that the space inside was very large.
The first floor housed an indoor track.
There was a 400-meter circular track, with an artificial plastic lawn in the middle.
It was filled with students huddled together under blankets, keeping each other warm.
Su Mo guessed that indeed, there were already hundreds of people gathered here.
Upon seeing He Fei and the others return, several people who looked like teachers came out to greet them.
With new faces like Su Mo among them, He Fei briefly explained their situation to the teachers, and they were allowed into the venue.
Then there was a voice of surprise, directed at Li Qian.
"Teacher Li?"
Li Qian looked over, and after dredging up a sliver of memory, he stepped forward to greet, "Teacher Ding."
Su Mo glanced at him, having forgotten that Su Niang once mentioned that Li Qian had been a well-liked teacher before the end of the world.
"With such a handsome appearance, he’s a teacher? Are you sure you’re not mistaken?" Zhao Changsheng teased quickly.
Li Qian gave her a stern look, his lips curling into a faint smile, clearly not taking her words to heart, just shaking hands with Ding Yan before him.
Seeing him, Ding Yan was clearly surprised, "You came all the way here from A City?"
"Yes," Li Qian said gently.
"My goodness, you’re really something," Ding Yan praised him. He quickly led them toward the staircase, "Come with me quickly. It’s too cold outside, we’re all freezing."
"Thank you," Li Qian said politely.
Being an acquaintance of Teacher Ding, the students felt more at ease, their gaze less guarded and more filled with curiosity toward this unusual group.
The gym’s main door was closed again, and Ding Yan guided them to the second floor, which featured an indoor basketball court with a real wood floor. Students also sat there, but it was much more sparse than downstairs, with only a few dozen scattered about.
Among them were the people who had been isolated the day before, and the superpower user who survived the high fever was lying not far from them, occasionally letting out a groan.
