Chapter 273: Chapter 271: Tide of Corpses

Zhao Changsheng and Li Qian went out to find a car, a semi-new Mercedes G500. When they pulled up in front of Su Mo, Zhao Changsheng, squinting her fox-like eyes, boasted proudly, "Look what we found. This car is quite expensive."

Su Mo was not in the mood to joke around. She opened the car door and stuffed everyone inside.

Li Qian, in the driver’s seat, had been forcing a smile along with Zhao Changsheng, but when the map in his mind showed a dense cluster of red dots, his expression froze.

Once everyone was in, he stepped on the gas and sped off.

They hadn’t gone far when a red light indicating low fuel immediately jumped up on the dashboard.

The car they had found halfway was almost out of gas.

Zhao Changsheng looked at the dashboard and said, "We had just added a bit of scavenged fuel when we found this car, and it’s almost gone already."

Su Mo leaned forward from the middle seat, "Can it last until we pass the zombie horde?"

Li Qian’s spiritual power spread out, and after a few seconds, he answered, "We can make it. There’s a bridge ahead. If we’re lucky, we’ll just pass right over."

"Where does that lead?" asked Su Mo.

"To the edge of City G. Most people from there should have come to City B for refuge by now. The number of zombies should not be too many," Li Qian replied.

Reassured, Su Mo leaned back in her seat, and Ling Ye sitting next to her said in a sticky voice, "Don’t worry, Sister Su."

Su Mo looked down at him. His handsome little face was expressionless, but his eyes were serious.

She looked at him, then looked up at Lu Chen and raised an eyebrow, "I’m finding that you and Lu Chen are becoming more and more alike in these little expressions."

She tugged on Ling Ye’s cheek, "Why the long face at such a young age, don’t learn from your Brother Lu Chen. It’s not handsome."

Ling Ye pulled his face away from her hand, looked up at Lu Chen, saw his instantly darkened expression, and then lowered his head in silence.

Su Mo could feel the chill emanating from Lu Chen and, shrinking her shoulders, gave him a conciliatory smile.

"Buckle up," Li Qian said from the front.

On the steel bridge ahead, there were broken cars everywhere. Li Qian slowed down and eventually stopped because of an overturned tanker blocking the road.

"A tanker?" Su Mo’s eyes lit up for a moment before Lu Chen pressed her head down onto the back seat.

"Stay down!"

Li Qian pressed down Zhao Changsheng’s head as well.

Su Mo heard the sounds coming closer and closer and immediately understood.

Everyone slowed their breathing. Below the steel bridge, on the dry riverbed, a dense group of zombies was moving.

Su Mo poked her head out halfway, and the entire dried-up river looked like an endless sea of zombies.

Her heart was about to leap out of her chest; she quickly ducked back into the car and whispered, "It looks like our luck is indeed quite bad."

"They’re moving towards the B City base," Li Qian’s mind mapped out.

"The base?" Su Mo was startled. "Is it just a coincidence?"

Li Qian glanced at her through the gap in the seat, "It’s not impossible for thousands of zombies to migrate together by chance, but them all moving toward the base is not normal."

"You mean it’s intentional..." Su Mo looked horrified.

They all knew that in all this time since the apocalypse, zombies had never shown intelligent, coordinated behavior.

If Li Qian was right, then it would be even harder for humans to survive.

"Wow! Woo," Jiang Yulian’s child suddenly cried out, and before she could make another sound, Jiang Yulian quickly covered her mouth.

Everyone in the car tensed up.

Jiang Yulian, scared pale, whispered in a very soft voice, "It’s nothing, right?"

No one answered her, Su Mo looked at Li Qian, asking with her eyes.

Li Qian shook his head, "It’s fine, they just seem to be heading towards the base."

..

At the entrance of Base B, the horde of zombies arrived.

Submerged among the crowd of corpses, a small body shuffled slowly, all the zombies around it maintaining a subtle distance as if in fear or perhaps awe.

"Sister, where, did, you go?"

...

Only when night fell did the horde finally disappear completely from the dried riverbed.

After the last red dot disappeared from the map in Li Qian’s mind, he said, "It’s safe now."

Su Mo finally could raise her head, having been in one position until evening, and it was truly uncomfortable.

The child in Jiang Yulian’s arms was too weak from hunger to even cry.

Heartbroken, she immediately picked up the child and, without considering the three men in front of her, lifted her shirt to nurse.

Everyone except Jiang Yulian got out of the car.

Su Mo stepped on the ground, shaking her waist forcefully a couple of times, "Half of my body is almost numb."

Lu Chen walked up to her, his cool palm resting on her sore waist, gently kneading.

Su Mo was startled at first, then moaned comfortably from the pressure on her waist, "Did you specifically learn this? You always get it right every time."

"Hmm," Lu Chen said softly, "but these are all deadly pressure points."

Su Mo turned her head and gave him a blank look.

Li Qian and Zhao Changsheng walked to the tank truck, each observing one side.

Then, Zhao Changsheng’s disdainful voice followed, "Momo, there’s not a drop of oil in here!"

Su Mo turned back, pulling Lu Chen’s hand as she walked over, "Must have been drained."

"It leaked mostly, almost empty, lucky it didn’t explode," Li Qian pointed at a huge crack in the middle of the tank.

"That’s not bad though, no one came to take the oil after being parked here for so long," Su Mo patted the truck’s body, already smelling the strong oil odor.

Li Qian stepped back, his expression helpless, "There’s not much left at the bottom, what’s there is almost dried up."

"This..." Su Mo stroked her chin, suddenly pulled out the Tang Blade and waved it in her hand, "Let’s not waste it. We have a long way to go, and my blade should be able to make a slit in this tanker."

Li Qian stepped back, waiting for her next move.

"Lu Chen, do you have any empty oil drums in your Space? Bring out a few," Su Mo said to Lu Chen, with the tip of her blade already touching the oil tanker’s base.

They had scavenged quite a bit of oil while at Happiness District, and of course, many bottles were now empty after the long journey.

Lu Chen brought a few over, walking to her side.

The Tang Blade easily pierced the bottom of the oil tanker, and indeed, as Li Qian had said, there was still some oil inside that hadn’t dried up.

Lu Chen took out a transparent tube, and said softly, "Draw back the blade."

Seeing this, Su Mo slightly shifted the blade to widen the slit and then pulled out the blade.

Lu Chen immediately inserted the transparent tube, and the oil flowed through the tube into the bottles.

"Looks like we won’t have to worry about running out of oil for a good while," Su Mo said cheerfully.
