Chapter 217: Chapter 215: The Way Back to the City
He seemed to have controlled his anger, his facial contours tight. "Beg me."
That phrase again, Su Mo felt stifled.
"We should still be able to fit one more person," said the Water Element Superpower User.
A dazzling smile instantly bloomed on Su Mo’s face, "That’s great then."
The superpower user just wanted to smile at her but then caught Lu Jin’s murderous glare. His smile froze, and he faltered, "Maybe... there’s no room left."
...
Su Mo’s fists clenched tight, she turned around furiously, "Lu Jin! Have you had enough?!"
This man had been acting like a madman since he was fished out of the flagellated algae.
"Beg me."
It was still that phrase.
Su Mo helplessly reached for her forehead, "Fine, I owe you one."
Her expression suddenly filled Lu Jin with a sense of pleasure. He glared at the man standing there like a block of wood, "Lead the way."
The group immediately got moving with their injured, leading them out of the woods.
A jeep was parked there with a person inside, clearly on the lookout.
Seeing their injuries, he was about to ask something but then he saw Lu Jin emerging from the leaves behind them. He quickly got out of the jeep and bowed repeatedly to Lu Jin, "Mr. Jin!"
Lu Jin didn’t want to waste words. He just gave him a dark look, and a brand-new modified military vehicle appeared out of thin air, which he climbed into the driver’s seat of.
The other man went back to his jeep, disheartened.
Su Mo maintained her pleasant demeanor and followed them into the back seat.
Lu Jin didn’t start the car, and the vehicle in front didn’t dare to move.
Su Mo, sitting behind him, said in confusion, "Drive the car."
Lu Jin started the vehicle but still didn’t move, "Come sit in the front."
...
Su Mo rolled her eyes, speechless, but she was eager to get back and didn’t want to argue about seating arrangements. She briskly climbed into the front seat.
Only then did the military vehicle start moving.
On the road, Su Mo watched the buildings flying past in reverse. Joy in her heart was unstoppable. But she restrained her facial expressions, and even the zombies tailing them on the rear of the vehicle started to look almost pleasant.
They were still some distance from the base. At least with nightfall, they would have to spend another night outside.
The night was very dark, and they eventually followed the lead vehicle into an unnamed small town to find a place to stay overnight.
The lead vehicle’s driver knew the way well and brought them to a department store building. Having ridden all day, Su Mo’s rear was sore from the bouncing. The first thing she did after opening the car door and getting out was to stretch and flex her legs.
Seeing her squinting and seemingly enjoying the small expression, Lu Jin quietly got out of the car and came up beside her.
"Sir Jin, this is a place that superpower users have cleared out on their own. We usually rest here when we go on long missions; it serves as a waystation," explained the captain who came down from the lead vehicle.
"Then let’s hurry inside," Su Mo rubbed her arms; the wind was quite chilly after coming down from the car.
Lu Jin went ahead first, walking up the steps while keeping an eye out to see if Su Mo followed.
The exterior glass of the department store was covered with layer upon layer of thick blankets, securely sealed except for a small door just wide enough for one person to pass through.
Once inside, it was as described: a haven for superpower users. Groups of two or three were gathered, holding flashlights or candles, sitting together.
Su Mo slightly raised her head; the second floor above was also faintly lit with many bright lights, indicating a large number of people.
The arrival of the group silenced the superpower users who were originally chatting among themselves. The air suddenly became quiet, and Su Mo returned her gaze to the front, where countless pairs of surprised eyes were looking at them.
It wasn’t until a sharp and anxious female voice shouted that the strange stillness was broken: "Lu Jin!"
Su Mo only felt a gust of wind before her, and a woman wearing a coat with a dashing appearance stood in front of them.
Geng Jiang was extremely excited; she wanted to reach out and touch him but seemed to have some reservations and withdrew her hand: "You’re still alive!"
Lu Jin didn’t say a word, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a figure that was about to turn and walk away. He immediately turned around, grabbed the collar of her coat from behind: "Where are you going?"
Su Mo’s neck was suddenly caught, her face flushed as she struggled: "Let go!"
As the grip loosened, she turned her head, anger boiling over: "Are you sick or something?"
"Why are you running?" Lu Jin’s expression was impatient; gripping her, he dragged her to an empty space.
Su Mo was speechless. In all good conscience, wasn’t she just trying to give these two people some space? All the way here, her neck had been grabbed several times; it was infuriating.
Geng Jiang watched the interaction between the two incredulously, then remembered the night when she first went on a date with Lu Jin and he turned her away, also because of this woman?
She couldn’t help but size Su Mo up and down; just a Level 3 superpower user, not even as good as herself.
Geng Jiang’s gaze darkened as she looked at the few Level 4 female superpower users who had come with Lu Jin, well known within the base. The team leader immediately passed the buck to her, and she shrank to the side with her companions.
Su Mo sat on the ground, feeling quite uncomfortable with all the eyes on her. What’s worse, she had already heard some of the whispers:
"Lu Jin actually came back! And brought a woman?"
"There’s trouble brewing at the Jiang Residence, it’s going to be uneasy these next few days."
"Shh, don’t let him hear you. How long has that person from the Jiang Residence been back? Plus, there are rumors that they’re preparing to appoint a second-in-command under Elder Jiang."
Hearing this, Su Mo’s hands tightened. She was about to stand up from the ground when Lu Jin pulled her back again.
He didn’t miss the tiny crack in Su Mo’s eyes, again because of Lu Chen. Realizing this, his tensed jaw and lips pressed into a straight line showed that he was angry. But what right did he have to be angry?
This person was supposed to be entangled with him for life, he probably thought as much.
Su Mo frowned, seeing the hostility in his eyes growing stronger. She twisted her wrist, her voice cold: "Can you let go, please? I need to go ask."
"Don’t make me angry," Lu Jin said.
His oppressive aura almost made it hard for everyone in the hall to breathe.
"Lu Jin, do we even have that kind of relationship? Just last night you wanted to strangle me," Su Mo’s complexion grew worse.
Lu Jin looked down; his hanging hand clenched into a fist so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
He let go of her hand, and Su Mo, shaking her wrist, stood up.
Geng Jiang sat down beside him. "Is it because of this woman that you stood me up that time?"
"Get lost!" His voice was laced with fury.
"You!" Geng Jiang pinched the bridge of her nose. "Lu Jin, am I, a Level 4 superpower user, not good enough for the Lu Family? Whether it’s missions or Crystal Stones, I can deliver them all."
Lu Jin looked up, his gaze as if staring at a dead person, made Geng Jiang stand up and take a few steps back, suppressing her fear: "Come back with me tomorrow. The Lu Family is about to turn upside down, and the Jiang Residence has been gaining a lot of momentum these past few days."
Without an answer, Geng Jiang knew that Lu Jin wouldn’t let her down on important matters.
Why? She couldn’t say for sure, only that people who knew him said that ever since he was young, Lu Jin had an endless thirst for power, for reasons unknown.
