Chapter 196: Chapter 194: Cannibal Insect
He turned his head and saw an equally towering Sky Tree by the bridge and immediately had an idea.
Lu Chen said in a deep voice, "I’ll go first."
"Be careful," Su Mo stood by the bridge, watching the turbulent river water below. As the man took a few steps, her heart tightened with worry.
Jianxiong glanced around and dragged a man out from the back of the group: "Peng An, keep an eye on him. If anything happens, pull the boss back immediately."
"Hmm,"
Peng An was a short Wood Element Superpower User. He obeyed and stood by the bridge, ready to use the superpower to draw materials from the surroundings to pull him back at any moment.
A vast area of the broken bridge was frozen over with thick ice, with all the hollow spaces filled in by the ice. Lu Chen lifted his foot and started running forward.
The bridge was too shaky, and a slight breeze could make it creak ominously. Below, the river’s waves surged, threatening to swallow anyone at any moment.
"Situation alert, something’s coming from the west side of the river, and it’s moving fast," Fang Xia said. In his mind, four or five elongated creatures were swiftly approaching the suspension bridge through the water.
Su Mo’s heart tightened. She gripped her Tang Blade and looked in that direction. Indeed, she saw huge ripples spreading through the pitch-dark, tumbling river water, revealing patches of armor-like skin. On top of the long and large mouths were vertical pupils that shone like solar flares, with white irises in the middle.
"Mutated crocodiles!" Sun Cheng shouted loudly.
"Hold them back, let Lu Chen cross!" Su Mo yelled, moving towards the shore.
Streams of bullets rained down on the layers of armor in the river, causing sprays of water to shoot up. Everyone fired their superpowers relentlessly at the crocodiles.
Lu Chen increased his speed and charged toward the riverbank.
The ceaseless attacks indeed redirected the crocodiles’ target. Their strong limbs thrashed powerfully under the water, steering them towards an assault on the shore.
"Superpower users, prepare! They’re about to come ashore!" Jianxiong’s rough voice urged urgently, his body suddenly leaped three meters high, positioning himself in front of Su Mo.
Groups of mutated crocodiles climbed onto the riverbank, launching an attack towards Su Mo and the others.
With their entire bodies fully exposed, the scales soaked in the dark river water reflected a cold light. Their sharp teeth were barely concealed under their massive jaws. No one dared to let their guard down, unleashing their superpowers and bullets as if cost was of no concern towards the crocodiles.
But their tough shells were comparable to those of the mutated gorillas, neither superior nor inferior.
Soon, someone noticed that these mutated crocodiles had unusually large bellies, bulging as if pregnant,
and they were a few sizes larger than the upper half’s shell.
Could it be that the belly was their weakness?
Even Su Mo thought so, but her strange sense of crisis told her it wasn’t that simple.
Jianxiong was about to attack the crocodiles with his bare hands when Su Mo pulled him back a few steps: "What’s wrong, sister? I’m going to help."
"Wait," her pupils contracted as she focused on the crocodiles’ bellies, where the skin that burst with purplish-blue veins was visibly pulsating, much like fetal movement, but...
She observed several crocodiles in succession, and all of their bellies were like this, which was overly unusual.
Moreover, the frequency of the movement was too frequent. Su Mo returned her gaze and shouted, "Don’t hit the belly for now, just stop them!"
Her words were immediately contested by some superpower users and soldiers:
"That’ll just consume superpowers and won’t kill them. It’s not worth it."
"Our ammunition is running low, Miss Su, we must hit the bullseye."
"..."
Several soldiers had already stepped forward, aiming their rifles at the bellies of the crocodiles, but Su Mo insisted on holding back, "Wait a bit longer, hold them off first."
She was Admiral Lu’s woman, and these people had no choice but to obey her, even if they were dissatisfied in their hearts they could only continue to lean on bullets and the resistance of their superpowers to slow down the creatures’ advance.
"Fang Xia, can you see what’s inside the crocodiles’ stomachs?" Su Mo turned her head and asked the man who was exerting his spiritual power.
The man shook his head, "I’m only Level 3, my level is not high enough to penetrate the epidermis."
"Little sister, is there a problem with the crocodiles’ bellies?" Jianxiong asked her, noticing her uneasy expression, he also felt a sense of unease.
Su Mo wasn’t sure, and instead of nodding, she pulled Jianxiong a bit farther away, "Lu Chen has gone over there."
"There’s even more of them! They’re coming from both sides, damn it! The bridge is impassable, we need to think of another way," Fang Xia’s face showed a hint of panic.
On the bridge over the river, no trace of the men could be seen, and a wood vine came flying with the Ice Blade and landed at Su Mo’s feet.
Looking towards the riverbank, she saw the man standing on a tree trunk, his gaze fixed on her. Su Mo immediately understood his intention, "Where’s Peng An?"
"Right here!" Peng An was tying up a crocodile with ropes at the riverside. Hearing Su Mo’s call, he ran over.
"Hang this vine on the Sky Tree, and make it higher!"
Su Mo handed the thick wood vine to him. Peng An nodded and immediately activated his superpower to hasten the growth of the wood vine, covering its surface with another layer of robust vines before controlling it to stretch toward the Sky Tree.
Too many, the whole river surface was nearly covered with those layers of black armor, pairs of vertical pupils emerged on the water.
Just after fixing the vines, Su Mo heard someone shout, "We can’t hold on, Miss Su!"
She turned around, only to see that soldier flip his rifle, and a hail of bullets shot toward the crocodile that was about to climb up to their feet.
"Bang!"
Nobody expected that the belly would burst open so easily, but what came out wasn’t small mutated crocodiles, but thousands and thousands of milky-white insects with sharp, pointed teeth.
"Ah! What is that!"
The soldier was hit directly, his face and hands were severly bitten by those insects. He dropped his rifle and desperately scratched at the bugs on his body; someone tried to help, pulling off one bug for him, but immediately another would replace it, continually burrowing into the man’s skin.
"Damn it! It’s getting inside! Ah!"
"Help! Save me!"
Many of the nearby superpower users and soldiers were splattered with the insects and began desperately trying to remove the bugs from themselves upon seeing this scene.
If it hadn’t been for Su Mo’s precaution of keeping her distance earlier, she feared she would also have been splattered. What scared her was that these insects could directly burrow into the body through the skin.
Lu Chen saw the situation on their side and jumped down from the tree, wanting to rush back to help, but Su Mo repeatedly gestured for him to retreat and mouthed the words to him: Go up and wait for me.
Seeing the man pause, Su Mo didn’t linger and instead shouted toward the back, "Run!"
She grabbed a wood vine hanging down from the Sky Tree and began to climb up, with Jianxiong closely following behind, his eyes wide with shock and fear. Those bugs seemed to penetrate any part of the human body, and they were too fast!
Everyone was terrified by the scene before them; those who were bitten by the bugs all fell to the ground convulsing, without exception. A quick glance revealed that more than twenty people were affected. The remaining people hurried to the Sky Tree, grabbed the hanging vines and started to climb up frantically.
